    Hi Drawyah, thanks for the awesome tutorial. There are some things that I learned flying the 787, and your feedback on some of this is appreciated:
    1. I find setting the IFR flight plan from the world map is easier to find the active runway for both departure and arrival. So I usually set my arrival pattern and the ILS approach depending on the active runway. Once it's loaded in, the FMC should have all the necessary waypoints to do the approach. But I do understand that in the real world, the ATC would only give you the approach pattern when you're starting the descent and not during departure. So your tutorial to enter them to the FMC is something new that I learned from you. Thanks.
    2. I find the VNAV to be inaccurate, and my descent altitude is largely depending on the ATC. Whichever altitude they assign me, that's where I set my altitude hold and V/S mode.
    3. When you're about to line up for the localiser, you can push the APP button practically anytime as you begin your approach. So even if you're currently still on LNAV with V/S or ALT mode, LOC and G/S mode will be armed as white text below each of those roll and pitch modes in the PFD. So you don't need to wait until the localiser and glide slope to line up to push the LOC or APP. Pushing the APP button once will arm those modes on stand-by and will automatically activate both LOC and G/S mode whever the aircraft intercepts the localiser and the glideslope.
    4. My final approach speed is usually within those zones with the yellow/brown line right above the stall zone. It automatically adjust the airspeed zone depending on the weather and your current payload. So I keep them on those zones, and I'll be in for a smooth landing.
    5. Am I the only one who uses the HUD at all times? I find using the HUD is easier on landing because I can zoom in a little to keep and eye on the runway, while having the PFD being mirrored on the HUD so I can look at both the runway and keeping my airspeed in the right zone as I land.
    6. When cleared to land, the aircraft will have Rollout mode and Flare mode armed under the LOC and G/S respectively, so I tend to keep my A/P on and let the aircraft flare itself on touchdown. The only thing I turn off is the A/T to keep my airspeed within the yellow/brown zone.

    • @JohnSmith-lx7hl
      @JohnSmith-lx7hl Před 3 lety +1

      @@nickmajurovski2516 It auto-flares but not consistently.. depending on the airport and the weather conditions. So don't rely on that too much. Especially since the latest patch.
      Instead do an assisted flare, where you're still on autopilot landing, but you move the stick just a little to assist the aircraft to flare, but not too much that it disengages the AP.

    I’ve been trying to land a 787 using autopilot for three days now. I got it all figured out on my own except I couldn’t figure out how to catch the glide slope. Time after time I would be perfectly lined up with localizer A/P taking me right down the runway, only to fly right over it at a constant altitude. I could still land by disengaging A/P but then had a hairy touch and go because I realized I wasn’t slowing down despite max braking. Based on your video it looks like my mistakes were not switching from LOC to APPR and not disengaging autothrottle. I can’t wait to try out what I’ve learned here and see if it works. Thank you!

    • @Drawyah
      @Drawyah  Před 3 lety

      Localiser only guides you into the runway. Approach is what flies you down the glideslope. Localiser will not affect your altitude.

    • @sinepilot
      @sinepilot Před 3 lety

      @@Drawyah Alas, it turns out I _was_ hitting APPR at the appropriate time, however what's happening is the APPR Autopilot is spontaneously switching back to LOC at some point after getting on the glide slope. After this point, any time I hit APPR, it switches itself back to LOC. I would assume this means the approach given to me by ATC has not been fully ingested, rather than due to inappropriate orientation, because my ILS markers on my HUD are all looking perfect. When I get the approach from ATC I click on the corresponding one in the FMC's "DEP APP" menu and then hit the Exec button, which is now glowing green. I don't know if there there any other steps. I assume ILS radios are correctly set after hitting the Exec button.

    Hi Drawyah,
    I watched a couple of your landings. Let me tell you, you are approaching too fast. Even though I don’t know the 787 app speed, next time try to approach at 145. You will notice a huge difference in the aircraft profile. Your airplane nose won’t be in the horizon but a few degrees up and landings will be smoother. Approaching at 170kts is too fast.
    Hope you try it!

    • @Drawyah
      @Drawyah  Před 3 lety +1

      Out of all the aircraft the 787 for me is prolly my worst for landing. Eventually I'll get the hang of it.

    • @jigonesa
      @jigonesa Před 3 lety +5

      Drawyah Drawyah app speed depends mainly on aircraft weight. It should also be corrected by wind and runway condition. As you usually fly in wind calm condition and dry runway, 145 Kts should be a good speed. I also saw you land an A320 at almost 145, which is fast. Try to land the A320 in between 130/135 kts. Otherwise you will float down the runway.
      Just given some advice. Hope you try it and let me know!

      Ok bro. I approach at 153. ILS’ VS is -800 so I would take control at 200 ft and try to pull the stick back so I get -500 or less. But every time just before I touchdown the plane pitches up itself even more and would just glide above the runway. I have to counter this by pushing the stick forward quite a lot. Anyway to fix this?if I don’t do anything and leave it at -800 it would still pitch up.

      Agreed. It really wants to float in the game and you almost have to push it down. Sensitivity of throttle and pitch on approach is super high too. Despite great graphics, I find it really hard to get a sense of speed and height on approach to feel what is happening. Below 100ft or so, it seems like everything looks and feels the same. With Xplane by contrast I feel I have surgical precision in what I'm doing below 100 feet.

    • @stalbott972
      @stalbott972 Před 3 lety +1

      Iiari if you get a chance look up ground effect and do some research on it. When you are close to the ground the wings actually cause a change in lift that is more than what you get when you are flying at higher up. This is actually modeled and you get the floating effect if you are not approaching correctly at the right speed. Part of it is change in lift as well as decrease in parasitic drag. The inverse happens on take off and if you are not careful you can actually lift off at incorrect speeds due to ground effect.

    Great tutorial! I tried to follow your tips, and I'm almost there now. However, for some reason I have a hard time aligning the plane with the runway for final approach. I flew ENBR - ENGM today, using a high-altitude IFR route suggested by the sim itself (not imported), with ILS approach for RW 19R. I tried multple landings, but every time after the AP made the last sharp turn prior to landing, the plane never hit the runway straight on, but always at a bad angle. Sometimes the plane even ended up in a completely random direection. I don't have this problem when I use the A320-plane. Do you what may cause this problem with the 787? Help is greatly appreciated :).

The 787 does that too, only when you reach the waypoint, the whole route resets. Is that a bug? And is there a way to solve that, for example to plot a new course to the rw you want? Regards, jan.

    I have an issue by pulling up the nose at the end (before landing). I am also stopping the automatic approach and the autopilot 1k feet above ground, but it is like the elevator of the aircraft is only repsonding minimally. I have also paused the game and checked again the hole autopilot system, it was full off. Also the pitching was at 1.4, which is not unnormal. After the hard landing, everything was again normal and the elevator responded perfectly (so I am sure the problem is not my joystick). I also landed again with more speed, it was the same. Does anybody have a solution?

    I think there's some real issues with this plane. The auto throttle does not seem to kick in during approach phase when I pressed the APP button which it did before the patch. I thought it was just me but I flew the plane three times since the patch, it won't adjust the throttle to match the speed I set. I had to manually adjust the throttle myself during approach. However it works during cruising and descending. Oh, the approach button does capture the ILS and guides the plane down with auto throttle control pre-patch. Post patch manual throttle control needed.

    • @Drawyah
      @Drawyah  Před 3 lety

      In the 787 you're supposed to manually control throttle on approach and touchdown.

    • @thecorporatepilotdad
      @thecorporatepilotdad Před 3 lety

      I did an approach with autothrottle and it worked fine. The APPR button only tells the flight director to fly the localizer and look for the glide slope. The autopilot follows the flight director. To get autothrottle you have to select the L and R autothrottle switches and set the IAS speed. I believe there is an Autothrottle button or switch below the LR autthrottle arm switch. You'll hit 3 switches to make it work. A/T Arm switches (two white toggles), A/T pushbutton (down and to the left of the speed adjust knob), and dial your speed you want to hold. Hope that helps.
