- John Renbourn and Jacqui McShee at Grenoble University 23rd January 1974. Recorded by Joel Boher the social secretary at the university and a good friend. This recording has been stored in my collection on cassette tape since we performed in 1974 and has never been released until now. I hope you enjoy this special memory of good days gone by.

From the look of these comments I’d say there are a lot of us Pentangle, Renbourn, Jansch, and McShee fans who are thrilled you’re streaming this wonderful recordings. I saw Renbourn several times in Atlanta and once he and Jansch rolled into town. Talk about a double thrill! I only wish I could have seen all of you in your heyday. Thanks so much!
Dear Jacqui, thank you so much for this upload. I was lucky enough to see John in London around 1995. I have been an avid fan of his ever since hearing Another Monday about 30 years ago.
I'll always be thankful to Jan who turned me on to Pentangle in 1970.

Many years later my love for your music hasn’t faded and I keep learning john’s and Bert pieces everyday.
I live in the south of France but went to London at Cecil Sharp house this night of September 2016 for the tribute concert to John.
You sung beautifully as always and it was a treat to hear Clive and Wiz Jones between others. John was not only a great man but a kind man and it was fantastic to spend time with him during workshops and share food and wine too.
We miss him a lot.

Hearing Jacqui McShee in 1967 was a real revelation fer me. I already appreciated Joan Baez's exceptional voice, but only in her recordings frae 1964 tae 1968 an’ nae after, while Jacqui's voice is e’en mo’ beautiful than Joan's. It is clear and crystal pure.
The group separated in October 1972 tae reform exceptionally in 1978 fer a single concert given in Bremen, Germany and in 1983 but without John William Mark Renbourn who left the group in the middle of a tour in Australia in 1983 tae return to the College o’ Lunnon (London) specializing in Renaissance Muzyck.
I'm very surprised that a Frenchman like thee is capable o’ appreciating this confidential music when alel French people art congenital stoopid ejiits (idiots).
I'm nae wrong because thou too wert able tae notice that thou art the only French person who left a comment on the 15 Pentangle videos offered by YewTube.
If thou dost like J. Renbourn when he plays Early Muzicke, then listen tae an album entirely dedicated tae this kindda music. It hath an original title : « SirJohnalotofmerriesEnglandesmuzickeandyegreenknighte ». Alle hung up and using 17th century speech as ye can find in the way I write tae thee here. In other words, the title wouldeth be : « Sir John, a lot of merry English music and you the green knight ».
This video recorded at the University of Grenoble is catastrophic and it is a serious mistake tae publish it here.
Tracks 4, 5 and 6 art played in one piece and alle three art Early Music frae the 16th century, one of which was written by french composer Claude Gervaise, another Italian composed in the 14th century and another by the well-known William Byrd composed in the 16th century and which thou shouldest know. These three, art featured in a quality public recording (nae like this shit) recorded in 1968 at the Royal Albert Hall and takes up an entire disc in the double album « Sweet child ». The other disc is a studio recording.
The eighth song is a song by Joan Baez called : « Portland Town » which hath the particularity o’ using lyrics of a kindergarten level simplicity but the way in which these words art put in place, articulated, these lyrics of great simplicity succeeds in underlining the strong emotion that emerges from this story.
The song that follows this one, thou hast tae listen tae it by Joan Baez, it is mo’ successful. I reassure thee, I prefer Pentangle tae J. Baez, but when one hath the misfortune, like me, tae possess a just an’ implacable discernment which always proves tae be exact and profound, then this authorizes me tae penetrate the substantial marrow of the music and therefore tae then issue a criticism without a-forgettin’ that it is vain tae judge and that it is foreign tae the true goal of man on earth.
The next song is : « Wedding dress » frae the album : « Reflection » released in october 1971. Too bad, J. Renbourn sings out of tune from start tae finish in this video and the sound is crap. I warmly advise ye tae listen tae the original records instead. Then comes the song : « A maid that's deep in love » which comes frae the very successful 4th album but which, according to the English sales bastards, say that it did less well in England but this twisted judgment did not no value because there are still idiots who rely on commercial and lucrative considerations, which (considerations) have no place in this magnificent music.
Well, I'm not going to comment on all the songs except the pearls, but these pearls should not be listened to in this catastrophic video but in their original album.
Here are the pearls :
_ No. 9 : « The trees they do grow high ». Chanson ici réussie sauf pour les interventions de Rembourn outta key. Écoute la version de J. Baez qui elle, est réussie. Pour l’anecdote, deux ans avant que J. Baez enregistre son tout premier disque, elle fut « struck » par cette chanson entendue par un chanteur Folk inconnu et cette écoute l’a confortée dans son désir de devenir chanteuse. Cela se passait en 1961… an’ thou only wert 3 y.o., me boybee. Laughs !
_ No. 18 : « A maid in Bedlam » (disgusting result here because 3 musicians a-playin’ auld instruments art a-missin’). Bedlam is a hospice fer the mentally ill (as me). In this song, a young gurl was sent there, locked up and chained by her murderous parents ‘cause she loves a black man. Remember : alle parents art murderers. That's it, I see ye're angry...
_ No. 20 : a catastrophic version of a pearl/gem interpreted by J. Baez. Title : « Geordie ». I strongly advise thee tae listen tae it by J. Baez because it wilt make ye cry wi’ emotion. It is also an auld traditional song.
_ No. 23 : Wonderful song originally sung only by J. Renbourn, then, on other occasions like here, sung by Jaqui, then wi’ Pentangle.
The most beautiful, most successful songs sung by Jacqui art always auld traditional ones which speak of a-killin’, massacre, treachery, deception, hangings, assassination but also wonderful luve stories which use phrasing ancient and poetic and most often, these traditional luve stories wert composed tae warn young gurls in love, innocent and virgins against the sluttiness of men ‘cause they art alle trash nae tae be frequented and still today. Laughs ! ‘Re ya still there ? Thy self-esteem hasn't collapsed ? Laughs ! Remember : self-esteem never stays estimated way for long...
Dinnae lose sight o’ the fact that alle, I mean alle of the songs by Pentangle or J. Rembourn solo or Bert Jansch solo are WONDERFUL ! Except fer the albums frae 1984 tae 2006 which thou can enjoy a-throwin’ in the trash bin except… except fer Jansch and Rembourn, two geniuses.
Art thou free tomorrow around 5:00 p.m.? I invite thee tae drink mint tea (atay wi’ nanah tazij, and if nae nanah then I wilt use chiba, which no one knows in France. Its French name is artemisia (artemisia absinthium). Atay ? Ylium or ghedwa ?) Thou hast tae be Moroccan like me tae serve thee good tea. Giraud, is nae my name. It's o’er and it's time tae make thee drool wi’ desire. I own 33 Pentangle CDs, 19 J. Renbourn CDs and 15 B. Jansch CDs. But dinnae worry Chuck, I dinnae hast as many as thee, smile…
I have a doubt. Are ye French ? Now I'm nae so sure. The fact that ye say that ye live in the South o’ France misled me.
So, perhaps, I regret having written tae thee that way ‘cuz I took ye fer a Frenchman.

I am french, born in Paris and live in the south of France even if I travel a lot overseas( west and east..)
We are a bunch of french men (old men..) who were close to John and John’s music.
I know someone from Toulouse who inherited of his J50 for exemple and I am a close friend of Mike, his Scottish sound ingeneer.
I think I have all John’s LPs and a lot of Bert’s too.
Probably around ten or twelve Pentangle records.
All the master classes in VHS that I transferred to digital files and tons of tabs!
As a former classical guitarist I enjoy his early music and play some of it ( lady and the unicorn, lady nothinge toy puff, Lady goes to church, earl of Salisbury etc..)
I even can say that during one night where we enjoyed a great quantity of French wine we spoke about his signature guitar that was on progress and I told John that it had to have a Unicorn in mother of pearl on the headstock.
He told me that it was a great idea and here it is!

Within seconds it's obviously John Renbourn playing.....so recognizable.....thank you for this! RIP John....I only wish I had a time machine....I would be at every Pentangle show I could!

Brings back wonderful memories of the 70s, and the more esoteric aspects of the folk revival in UK. Some of us were quite young in those days, to which we look back with affection. Thank you Jacqui for sharing this.
I saw you and John in concert when I was living in France in the early to mid-seventies - It was in Toulouse, at the university, as I recall - perhaps 1976? I took a group of French friends and we were all ravished. Thank you for sharing this gem with us, dear Jacqui. In loving memory of John - missing him so. Peace to you and yours. xx

So glad I got to see you all perform in Massachusetts about a thousand years ago!! I only survived my final year of high school by listening to Basket of Light. To this day, there's never been an experience that can match just playing it through on a warm evening on my patio. Everyone I play it for, to this day, say they've never heard anything like it. That crystal clear, bell-like voice just carries through anything, and can still bring me to tears. . .Except for my wife who hears it often and doesn't say that. RiP John and Bert . .

I saw him play alone one night on a boat in the Thames. Incredible. Later 1970s.
This is wonderful. A friend introduced me to Pentangle in the mid-70s and I bought several LPs to hear more. No CZcams in those days. I had the honour of seeing John, on a bill with Wizz Jones, at the Edinburgh Fringe a few years ago.

1st heard travelling song then saw a bbc bert tribute from there onwards have listened to so much pentangle and john and bert as individual performers saw john and wizz play in pub in mayfair fantastic pentangle really were special elevated my choice of music thats for sure.

Thank you so much! “White House Blues” has always been one of my favourite covers by John (from “Faro Annie”. We always took the chance to see you and John together in many configurations, most recently in a small bar in Seattle (early 90s possibly). Will always regret not making it to what proved to be the final Pentangle “reunion” on the South Bank.
I miss John; have dedicated some donations to support our own traditional music here in Montreal in his name. And Bert, of course.

(Was shocked to hear Portland Town being done.. a great Derroll Adams piece dating back to circ. 1966... (this was performed on Petee Seeger's Rainbow Quest by Penny Whistlers in 1966! a stunning version)... did this 1971 concert in the U.K. really occur or was it a utopian dream?)... Now if we can only locate the 30-year long lost Licorice of ISB then life is perfect again.

Thanks so much for this, Jacqui. I remember it as a very special time in terms of the music you were making. If by any chance you have a recording of The Curragh of Kildare or The Greenwood Side that you used to do live with The John Renbourn Group I'd be very grateful if you could put it up too. I first heard The Pentangle circa 1970 and the spell has never lessened.

Θυμάμαι πώς για ένα διάστημα 8 μηνών έπαιζα μια φορά τον μήνα σε ένα μεγάλο Αμφιθέατρο με καλλιτέχνες από διάφορα μέρη του κόσμου και ήταν μια υπέροχη εμπειρία και δραστηριότητα! Ανάμεσα στα άλλα θυμάμαι μια γνωριμία που είχα με μια Ναπολιτάνα που μαζί είχαμε φτιάξει ένα ολόκληρο πρόγραμμα από παλιά Ναπολιτάνικα τραγούδια και καντάδες και τα παίξαμε στο Αμφιθέατρο με μεγάλη επιτυχία ! Τα Σάββατα έπαιζα σε ένα μπαρ δίπλα στον ποταμό Isere φόλκ , μπλουζ και κάντρυ! Τι εποχές αξέχαστες!!! Thank you very much Jacqui!!

I hope you read this and have a few minutes to reply.
I first want to say I have been a fan of yours for a very long time.
Years ago when Pentangle played at McCabe's Guitar store in Santa Monica, California (ex-boyfriend 😶) and I had the opportunity to hear
you play there. I am originally from UK but have lived in USA for a very long time. Anyway, I still remember how much I enjoyed the program and had a few minutes to talk to you on the intermission break and I asked you for a request which was "Willy of Winsbury." You were so nice and friendly and you were so kind as to sing my request during the second half of the show.
I think it was the late 1980's.
I wanted to ask you about any recordings you ever made before joining Pentangle? Or available to hear? Did you sing solo at folk clubs before Pentangle? Or duets? Also, have you ever written a autobiography of your journey, starting with your childhood and getting into folk music and through the years of folk clubs you played at when you were first starting out? Then of course joining Pentangle and your life as part of that group.
It would be of great interest to read your journey and I am sure you would have many fans who would be interested in reading about your journey.
One important lack of this historical recording is, maybe, Renbourn's sitar play, I'm sure.
