  • A rare instance of Bert & John performing together (albeit jamming at the end of two solo sets on a shared bill) post-Pentangle and before their brief early 90s reunion. The audio comes from a cassette acquired in the 80s. There appears to be a bootleg CD available online - I've no idea if the sound is better than my cassette source, which I've enhanced as far as possible with non-pro gear. The highlight must surely be Bert's 8-minute solo rendition of 'Avocet' - I'm not aware of any other purely solo recording of this tune from the 70s.
    Renbourn:
    1.So Early in the Spring
    2. Mist Covered Mountains / The Orphan
    3. The English Dance
    4. onstage interview
    5. Great Dreams from Heaven
    Jansch [begins at 26:40]:
    6. Blackwater Side
    7. Downriver
    8. One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer
    9. onstage interview
    10 Avocet
    Jansch & Renbourn:
    11. Blues Run the Game
    12. Key to the Highway

What I would do to go back 40 years in time and drink a beer in a crowded smokey dive listening to John and Bert without all these new antisocial regulations. R.I.P. Bert & John.

Bert wasn’t kidding when he said his favorite thing was scotch, bourbon and beer. All these years later and sometimes I feel the tragedy of his loss line it was yesterday. Thanks for this rare treat.

This is fantastic. Both sound at the top of their game. I reckon the Black Balloon , parts of which are played here, is one of the great acoustic guitar albums

Blackwater Side. Still remains one of his more culturally significant pieces. Dig what this great late guitarist has left us.

There is this other solo live recording of Avocet, in Santa Cruz in 1978.

I had a feeling there was another from Japan, but the only live Japanese one I can find now also has Martin Jenkins.
