- I thought you all might be interested to see this greatly enhanced footage from a 1966 documentary about the London Folk scene
I have greatly enhanced the video and Audio the video is now full screen and 720p and the sound is vastly improved

In the short Interview at the end Bert Jansch is talking about the newly formed group "Pentangle" which was John and Bert on acoustic guitars, & Vocals, Danny Thompson on double Bass, Terry Cox on Drums and Jacqui MsShee on lead vocals they became one of the first British Folk Rock Bands their music combined a mixture of Jazz, Blues and British folk Music
Yes, and what a band. Danny is underrated or, at least, rarely do I hear him spoken of. Most excellent bassist.

I heard the Pentangle for the first time, on our local FM adult contemporary station, KINK Radio 102mghz, in about 1974, when the station played the Pentangle number, Sweet Child, as the title track to their double vinyl album from 1968. I quickly drove to our largest eclectic record store in Portland Oregon, Music Millennium, and bought the double vinyl album on their import British Transatlantic label. I still have it today in nearly perfect condition. It's rare to still find it on original import vinyl.
I took the record cover which folds open like a book with large printed images of the entire Pentangle group, to a performance by Bert Jansch, in about 2012, I believe it was.
I took several younger friends of mine and a lady friend my age. This is at a venue in North Portland, called Mississippi Studios.
It was packed and sold out to several hundred fans, and Neil Young's wife Peggy Young opened for an hour, before Bert started.
At the end there was a lady rounding up cables on the stage and I just thought she was a roadie working for the studio. I walked up and asked her, is there a chance that Bert might come back out? I'd like to have him autograph my Pentangle album and tell him that when I bought this at age 20 in 1974, his music changed my life. She said she'd go back and tell him. I waited for several more minutes, and my friends wanted to leave, as the place was now nearly empty. So I asked her again, are you sure he's going to come out? She says yes I'm sure because he's my husband, I'm going to go ask him now. I just said to her, oh my gosh, I'm so honored that I met Bert's wife before I met him.
He finally walked out and he was limping as if struggling to walk, I think it was about the last year or two of his life. He told me that his favorite banjo player lived here in Portland Oregon. His voice sounded similar to hearing the aging Eric Clapton speaking today with the same accent. Then when he signed his name, he drew a circle with a star in the middle. I was told by others that all of the Pentangle group members sign their names with this same Pentangle monogram.
I was later driving in my car, possibly not a year later and I was reading some messages under Pentangle videos in CZcams, as people were giving their condolences. I realized that Bert had recently passed away. I felt so honored to get to meet him and shake his hand and watch him play just an acoustic guitar alone that night in front of that packed crowd. I took a short video maybe just a minute or two in length of him playing, it's in my Mark Seibold CZcams channel.

I was so lucky to have a year in England when I turned 20 in 1965. Met Bert and John, Simon and Garfunkel, many more. When John performed in Boston in 1966, I was in the front row of a small venue. I’m 60 and can’t believe I went through most of my life without having discovered these guitar geniuses. Better late than never👍
I'm 35 and have played guitar (ironically in their style/fingerstyle folkish blues with syncopated rhythms and a thumbpick) for around 20 years and only heard about Bert today from a reddit post. You can truly hear how is style and patterns have influenced all the greats from Jimmy Page to Eric Clapton yet has largely remained uncredited and in the dark since then. Don't feel bad though, it seems as if nobodys really heard of him until recently but I feel lucky to have had. He's a rare original.

@@accuser_of_the_brethren7816 I am 68 years old. I remember coming across Bert back in the early 70's. And I immediatly knew that Jimmy Page ripped him off on Black Water Fall. Nearly note for note. On the Led Zeppelin album it is noted as written by Jimmy Page. Just not true. And they were great friends. He just didn't sue him for it. Maybe he was happy Jimmy did well at the time. I am also a fingerstlye player and learned a few of Bert's tunes. I am more of a country style and blues picker here in the states. But play everything! It's all fantastic stuff. My old school mate toured with Bert in California back in late 70's. He said Bert was a great guy to hang with and jam with, obviously, right?

Following Pentangle for years I was aware of Bert & John (& after Pentangle broke up) doing duets & solo projects. They influenced my playing (over 60yrs) on acoustic and now at 76yrs I'm still learning from them.
I like it. I still play but not often enough. I think we need some stimulus beyond you tube. There is a lovely librarian in Barnstaple. Maybe she likes music. I don't get much from Pentangle now but still listen the guitars and Danny Thompson was the king! Try John Martyn without Danny's bass - not the same quality.
I teach guitar... over 45yrs now online -fingerpicking - open tunings , blues always taking on new students.

@@eahannan In space and time who knows what is now, or what was then? At the time I listened it was now for me but it was then for Bert. I like to consider this kind of stuff knowing that God views time as continually now. Or to put it another way, Bert and all history still exists from the viewpoint of God and anyone who can consider a triangle of time and space and be in a corner looking at the other two corners of travel from start to finish.... gets it.

So many memories....we all had a flat like that with the old gas fire! Its wonderful to see and hear them...young and beautiful. I understand that's Sandy Denny in the chair....she lived nearby. Great,....thanks.
These guys were so cool in 66/67. I used to hitchhike from Birmingham at weekends to see them in Les Cousins or Bunjis. Whichever one of them had the gig the other one would turn up later the worse for wear and it always ended up in a jam - brilliant!
yep, in 1966 i used to hitch-hike down from Leeds -- there'd be guitarists from all over the country, turning up with doss bags on their back
What a treasure this is! Listening to them form "Bells". I wore the 1st Pentagle album out and rediscovery them is surreal. Thanks for this gem.

I saw both Bert and John a number of times in the 1990s and 2000s. Bert I briefly encountered but never spoke with, just his presence was inspiring. But I had a great conversation with John after one of his gigs - he was a delightful man, interesting, no ego and very kind.

"I Know My Babe" just blows me away every time. John was a total joy ; a consummate performer.

Marvelous film of a wonderful period in first bloom. I saw Bert Jansch several times; always left the gig incredibly inspired, and slightly high. Sadly, never got to see John Renbourn. The music will always be there however; that is much to be grateful for.

@@Adibarum I did thanks. I think I heard 'I know My Babe' in about '77 - I had just started listen to this particular group of musicians, and had yet to hear Jansch, or Davey Graham for that matter - the version seen here remains a personal favourite. Big fan of the Incredible String Band as well!

I was lucky enough to be in Soho when these two first appeared. Spent many evenings sitting at their feet. Got to know them. Wonderful times.
I remember when Bert played at our local folk club back in the 80s, great guy I’ve seen John a couple of times and he was simply amazing. God bless them both.
smashing footage. At 41, i wasn't about in the 60's, but v fortunate to have seen Bert, John, Davy and others in the early 00's, who have all since sadly left us.
I wish I knew their music before 2008. Missed a chance to see them.
Happy to say I was well aware of these two gents and a big fan in the 60's. They played all over but eventually had a residency at a pub called the Horseshoe in Tottenham Court Road. I was there just about every Sunday. This is great footage, thanks.

I loved these two - but Bert was my all time hero
Renbourne and Jansch were Legends of Pentangle. I remember seeing them play in Bristol in late 60's I dont think Renbourne missed one single note all night, his Sitar Rendition on...Once i had a Sweetheart made me jump up and applaud my girlfriend thought i had lost it, i started the wave of Appreciation for this very underrated Guitarist. Jacqui McShee sang like an Angel a superb mix of Brilliant Artists, Jansch is McShee's Polar Opposite! Check out Hunting Song for the Contrast? Works Sublimely, they were quite Superb together, always loved their Music. If you dont know Pentangle check out the Album...Basket of Light for Starters for me it is up there with Bridge over troubled water in its own Category. Go from there you will be hooked. Pentangle on my Motorbike is my release for all the disrespectful idiots on four wheels, my calming release, it is that good! RIP Bert you are much missed. Pentangle England's Finest ever story telling Musicians. Musical Genii ALL of them. Thanks for the Amazing Pleasure you have given my Ears and my Emotions during my lifetime.

For me, still plays like i was a youngster. Superb Musicians. Bert was an acquired taste vocally, but fiited the group so brilliantly. RIP.

Having got their early albums I bought a ticket for a concert at the Royal Festival Hall billed as Bert Jansch & John Renbourn. When the lights went down over the Tannoy came "Welcome to the stage, Pentangle". My immediate thought was "Have I come to the wrong concert, what's Pentangle?". I very quickly found out and feel very privileged to have been there that night.
Back in the sixties, in Toronto, these were two of my heros along with Doc Watson. Still have all their early albums. Was less enchanted with Jaqui McShee in Pentangle. It was a great era for music.
Bert was just as cute as a bug in those days. What a smile. Apart from the fact of him being one of the greatest guitarists that the world ever knew.

I know my baby is just fantastic. It demonstrates some of that amazing technique. Its a real pity there isn't more Renbourn stuff from this era on youtube. Although he was still entertaining in later years, a lot of the stuff on youtube doesn't come close to doing him justice.

I used to listen to The Pentangle quite a lot way back in the seventies. Being one of the organisers of a folk club in my hometown I had the opportunity to book John Renbourn. I remember having a very nice chat with him. He played a Guild and this inspired me to buy one too.

Take it from someone who hasn't picked up a guitar since they were 10. You defiantly don't.
You can learn the songs but never play them half as well. Legends.
They are stupefyingly great.
I have the a Yamaha LL11 purely because Bert played one.

Dark winter's night circa 2005, on the East Coast.An isolated club cslled the Farm in the middle of nowehere.Jacki & John were booked tickets were £18. Only 15 turned up that night as no one else could afford the tickets.
Owners only illuminated the stage with one tiny red light so almost impossible to see them.They did two brief sets each of about seven numbers.Inbetween,i managed a few photos of them.After the second set,they packed in minutes and were gone.
Later,Andy one of the promoters was moaning that John Renbourn had nicked his lighter,;-)
I wondered what dialogue occurred between them afterwards as that place must have seemed like the 'end of the earth'.

The guitar duet they're playing is titled 'Bells of St. Marys'. Shortened to 'Bells', it was the second track on Pentangle's debut album in 1968. A live version was included as an 'extra track' on the CD release of Pentangle's 'Sweet Child'. I don't seem to recall it being on the 'Bert & John' album (as claimed in the author's opening video scroll).

I went to England in '71 and became immersed in this kind of music. I had been and still am a huge fan of the Who. My favorite bit of the original recording of Tommy had an amazing acoustic solo by Townsend at the end of the Overture. I wanted to know about where that sound came from. I was introduced to the Music of Davey Graham, Nick Drake, and Pentangle. That's where these two wonderful guitarists spent much of the time together. British blues. The best.

Saw JR and Jackie MacShee in Les Cousins in late 60s. Sublime. Bert turned up the worse for wear to help JR advertise some gigs they were both doing in the coming weeks... JR perhaps unwisely asked him up to do a duet....started well but then he fell off the stool and tried to continue sitting on the floor. JR sensibly stopped the fuet. Btw Paul Simon put his head round the door took one look at what had happened and decided not to come in.... Always remembered that evening..😂

I think I listen to three Bert Jansch releases from 1965-66 - one of them togehter with Renborn plus Jansch recorded with Donovan.Have a relaxed week, Stuart.Frank
I had no idea Bert Jansch had recorded anything with Donovan,,that a new one on me I will have to do some research and check that out
I think I was wrong - I always thought Jansch played on Bert's Blues and House of Jansch. But he did not.
