The Kooky Case of Raven Abaroa

  • Raven Abaroa was happily married and life was good. Until it wasn't, of course. When tragedy struck his wife, the investigation eventually led to this man, who claimed to be completely innocent. Years would go by, and his future wife, too, would realise he was not who she thought. Then a bit of digging found the smallest contradiction in his story.

    Several years ago, I would lay on my couch for days, going through opioid withdrawal, watching That Chapter. I was addicted to the meds I was prescribed at 15 for two sports related knee operations. So in the middle of my agony I looked for a distraction; this channel gave me that. This channel provided me with, at the time, a full week worth of content to soak up. Here I am, 3 years sober now, and That Chapter is still a place of comfort for me.
    Cheers, Mike. Thanks for keeping me distracted in the best way.

      @@ritawashere5787my husband's from India and it's quite common for them (their culture) to equate pride with possessions. They congratulate each other on a new, top-of-the-line TV, car, house, etc...you name it. Keeping up with the Jones is a huge thing for them. It is here somewhat too. Maybe not as bad though. I think you already see him in a negative light and automatically interpret that scene negatively because of it. Not that I liked him. Personally, I'm so turned off when my husband's relatives brag. They brag to anyone because status and material possession is what brings them a sense of pride. Anyway, that's all I got.

    There's a huge "what if" that was never mentioned in this case: "What if" he killed his wife BEFORE leaving with his friends? Whoever did the initial autopsy did a real shitty job. If the contacts were missed, what else was? During an autopsy, a complete description of the body, head to toe, inside and out should be recorded. My guess is, the person who conducted the initial autopsy was a coroner and not a pathologist. A coroner is an elected position whereas a pathologist is a W2 position and has vastly more postmortem training. Also, I wouldn't put a lot of weight concerning footwear because unknown footwear could simply habe been used for diversionary purposes. The fingerprint on the window could have been left from the day it was installed. There's no way to determine the age of a respective latent impression. I'd further guess the crime scene wasn't processed well as most cases are won or lost at the crime scene.

    Damn, I live in Durham but don't remember this one. I can tell you one thing though, I was part of a grand jury for a whole year at the beginning of covid here in Durham, and, with the exception of a few people, the whole thing was a joke. You send 18 people into a sealed courtroom once a month, most of whom know little to nothing about the law, then detectives and officers come in to lay out their cases to you. A good amount are definitely legit. But then you get some that try to sell you straight bullshit. But since no one even goes over basic law (probable cause, etc) with the jurors, we're mostly just left to ask the detectives if their case and/or arrest was legit. Which is completely useless. We had too many cases of people being arrested with us jurors (most with NO legal knowledge) deciding whether or not these people's lives should be ruined for something the cops had no business even searching them for. When I began, I was actually excited about it, but as with every aspect of Justice, it was disillusioning.

Then I actually went through the system and saw it for what it was - a bunch of people with undeserved power, trying to enrich themselves or advance their careers or both, with no regard whatsoever for the people whose lives they're absolutely destroying. I mean... the lawyers would argue that and a judge would decide. You aren't there to be the lawyer...you are there to decide if it's guilty or not or I suppose in this case if there is sufficient evidence to go to trial. Cops don't always know every in and out of every law. Thats why you have district attorneys. See if a cop tells a da about an arrest...they would know that the search or whatever was no good and decline prosecution..if they for whatever reason don't the defense lawyers would argue and again the judge decides. I've served as a juror and if we had any question about any law being charged the judge explained it to us in depth. The cops are ARRESTING you... the district attorney DECIDES the charges.

As I expressed to Zaza a moment ago I too would like to have life insurance just in case something happened to me.

      True crime is inherently exploitative and is disrespectful by its very nature. Respectful means to consider the feelings, wishes, and rights of others in a thoughtful manner. Mike cracking dark jokes about the crime in question isn't considerate to the victim, who were real people who lives were brutally cut short, and their friends and family (also real people). I'm pretty sure I know why some people try to rationalize to themselves why Mike and other true crime media are being respectful. It's due to the cognitive dissonance felt from deriving entertainment off of other peoples grief, pain, and suffering. Unless you're a sociopathic sadist, you know that that is morally wrong. Thus, discomfort is felt from the contradicting beliefs and/or thoughts.
      Others that try to be less disrespectful about it attempt to get consent from the victim's family, typically won't mention the perpetrator's real name to keep the focus on the victim, and tend to donate some of the money they're making to organizations that assist victims and their family. Mike does none of those and he makes roughly $20,000 to $30,000 a month off the real people lives that were brutally cut short, and their friends and family's grief while cracking jokes about it. The victim and family's boundaries are violated and they're essentially victimized all over again for our entertainment.

Her mom was really sweet and was very involved in church activities including the youth programs, so everyone knew Mrs. Christiansen. One of her sisters was named Jeanette (I believe that's the sister they show at the end in the courtroom, but a couple sisters looked so much alike so I can't be sure), and that's the one I knew best out of all of them - all of the kids' names in their family started with a J.
      When you attend an LDS church it's more than just going to church on Sundays. There are always activities, especially for their youth programs. There are dances a couple times per month and root beer float socials, etc. You're at the church 2 or 3 times a week, so the kids get to know each other really well. But I moved when I was 15 and only saw them a couple of times after that so lost touch with them. But my best friend from my childhood attended that church her whole life. So when I first heard about this case (it was on dateline or a similar program several years ago), I asked her if she was from the Christiansen family we knew and she verified that she was.
      Do you not think all of the people in the cases Mike covers had lives, and actual friends? Do you think they didn't grow up going to school and going to church just like everyone else did? Of course they did. So it would make sense that occasionally people who knew them are going to run across one of his videos. But sure, it's all BS. I just made it up for no reason at all. Lol

      This is just confirmation bias. There’s thousands of 911 calls with innocent people that say similar things. You’d have to be slow in the head to think that counts as evidence towards guilt. Too many people watch True Crime and forget what objective evidence actually is.

    • @amityislandchum
      @amityislandchum Před 2 lety +4

      @@Boodoo4You Yup. It's all over these videos. You can always tell that these people get their ideas about guilt from other videos made by amateurs, because they're always repeating the same phrases. "He started by saying he just got home -- so guilty!" "He referred to her in past tense -- guilty!" "He said 'that girl' instead of using her name -- guilty!" 🙄

    • @Boodoo4You
      @Boodoo4You Před 2 lety +3

      @@amityislandchum Absolutely nailed it. Every single one of those phrases annoys me. “He said that girl which means he’s distancing himself from her”. Or “he said I loved her which means he knows she’s dead”. Everyone wants to be Inspector Holmes and analyse their speech or their body language like they know what they’re talking about. If it’s subjective, then it’s not good evidence, and it should not be used as evidence of their guilt. Human behaviour and language is just way too complex to be a repeatable science that you can analyse reliably. I question the intelligence of anyone who says things like that, unless they make it very clear that it’s just a feeling that they’re voicing. Glad someone else has noticed this too lol.

      Going into this video I could only guess he killed her because yanno. Usually is the bf. But the phone call itself wasn't like "omg guilty"
      The other side was a guy who bashed his wifes head in on the farm they lived on. He did a really good job sounding not guilty on his 911 call. It's hard to fake that kind of panic in my opinion.
