  • Hi Guys,
I'm putting together a series on outboard motors on how to remove the lower unit, how to replace your impeller and also on how to replace the seals and oil in the lower unit. This process should apply to many models of the Johnson and Evinrude motors. This is is Part 3 in the series be sure to check back for more coming soon!

The Water Pump Repair Kit with Housing that I used for the impeller was by Sierra and was part # 18-3327
It replaces Johnson and Evinrude 394711 and fits
    1974-UP 9.9/15 HP 2 Stroke and 1995-UP 9.9/15 HP (4 Stroke)
    Thanks
    Joe

Its been many , many years since I was inside one of these so I'm watching to remember the steps. Anyway my dad was an OMC service tech. He taught me to use dish detergent to coat the impeller and housing to make life simple ,plus I cringed watching that screw driver burring the inner housing. Each burr will cut away at the impeller. But the video made me remember the steps involved. Thanks.

use dish detergent and put the impeller on first and rotate the driveshaft and force the housing over it . never use a screwdriver to put an impeller in you risk damaging it .

The instructions that came with mine said to use motor oil...

The instructions that came with mine showed that the rubber pieces (2 similar) had different inner diameters (to match the diameter of the coolant tube that descends from the engine)

How long do you wait before running a water test? Don't want to wash out the permatex aviation .

I'm not sure what you mean about permatex aviation?

You can run the test right away... that stuff sets once you tighten everything down

Good vid, but begins after the lower unit is off? Better vid would be to start from the beginning.

Should be able to lubricate with liquid soap and get the impeller in the housing rather than all that poking around.

In addition to dish soap, another tip is to use a tie wrap to hold the vanes down. Get all the vanes part way in, then cut the tie wrap. The soap will help it slip the rest of the way in.

That stainless plate needs to go back on
The impeller will destroy that gasket on its own

"Black gasket" is actually painted stainless plate
