I built it yesterday, went and flew it today. It flew very well, flies fast, had a lot of fun, broke the motor and firewall off eventually, but was able to keep going with some judicious rubber band usage. I went with putting the battery inside the power pod as didn't like the thought of landing on it. Thanks for the design and the video, love your website.
I've built several of these. The last one I built I added carbon spars to the wings and tail, and I used epoxy to coat the edges of rudder and elevator. Super strong and fast!
How remarkable is this?? A casual observer would say, "it's just a bunch of DT foamboard!" I can't stress how WRONG such a statement would be--the experience level which has gone into the current designs such as this is creating sophistication in airframe assemblies and flight performance that would never have been imaginable before. I congratulate the Flite Test crew for promoting this affordable and rewarding entry into RC flying, we would all be poorer without your fine efforts. God Bless!!
Great helpful Videos for Kit and Scratch build. I loved the look of this aircraft so I decided to build two by buying the Kit and Scratch building the second. I have started with the scratch build built from the plans and tracing the kit parts. I have practice built a Fus and Wings to my own design, a couple of years ago. I was very impressed with the results. Although I have a good Glue Gun, I much prefer rto use a good waterproof PVA, as this gives you time to assemble straight and correct. Use masking tape to hold the parts together when curing. The wing LE bevel should be 50=60 degrees or youll overstress the paper at the hinge point, if only 45 degrees. Still. I used colored Gaffa tape to reinforce the LE paper at the hinge. Realising the Ppwer Pod will not be easily removable, I decided to Velcro the Lipo under the P Pod. To fully secure the lipo cut two slots in the Pod base with thin ply reinforcement. so you can pass a velcro strap thru and firmly secure the Lipo during aerobatics. The plan does not show a front P Pod cutout necessary to clear the C folded part of the fus front. Well. Ive really into these builds, and have two Baby Blenders waiting to build. A great advantage of these builds is there is loads of room in the Power Pod to add a gyro stabliliser unit and even GPS and FPV. Thanks again for your great service Guys......back to building, for me!
I am really impressed with the thought that flight test has incorporated into there designs.
Have built a few flat foamies including rc powers f-18 & f/a22 model Polaris.
The air foil & power pod & mount points take foam to higher level altogether
This was a great build video! I enjoyed the periscope today as well. Lots of hobby shops sell 'piano wire'(in many sizes) and its great for push rods.
Looking forward to more community builds! Thank you all!
Daaaang, Periscope is something I haven't thought of in a while! Hahaha! Did you ever watch that DJ dude with the bobble head? I'd hang out on his Periscope for hours! Dude could mix and the whole chat was having a blast.
Simpler times 😭
I really enjoy watching your old build videos before going to bed.
I just want to say this plane is awesome. I have built around 10 FT planes now and this one outperforms them all. The best part is how fast you can build one. I scratch built and maidened one in under 2 hours total.
Infinite Remote Control B.S. E even Josh would have issues completing this build from tiled plans to completed with electronics in 2 hours
I have built 3 of your Bloody Baron’s. I have some building suggestions and wanted to show you the modifications I have made.
1. I always have trouble doing the bevel for the hinges on the flight surfaces. This is how I now do them:
a. Using a metal rule with a cork backing (so it does not slip), I hold it about a quarter inch from the folded edge.
b. Hold my knife against the straight edge and guide it along the folded edge of the hinge. Gives a nice straight cut with the appropriate angle.
2. Painting
a. Paint before attaching the wing and the tail feathers and the servos.
b. Be sure to mask those areas there the pieces are glued together.
c. I have used both Krylon and Rust Oleum. Be sure to give a very light seal coat and allow to dry so the paper does not lose adhesion to the foam.
3. I disliked landing on the battery. Cut a hole in the bottom of the Power Pod and used magnets to hold hatch in place. Battery is attached to the bottom of the fuselage reached through the hatch. ESC is attached to the side of the Power Pod aft of the hatch.
4. I had two issues with the design - landings were fast (resulting in broken props) and the ailerons were very sensitive, even with limited travel and a lot of expo. To solve both problems, I spit the ailerons in half, made the inner portion into flaps and the outer portion as ailerons. Used two servos on the ailerons connected by a ‘Y” harness, and two servos on the flaps, also connected by a “Y” harness. Both harnesses were run inside the wing. Need to mix in some down elevator when the flaps are deployed. Ailerons still have plenty of authority, but not as touchy and landings are slower with flaps deployed.
I love the new plan format. It assists us partially color blind people.
The plan looks great. I have to build one now. I have been waiting for another build video. I am a 48 year RC Veteran, but I enjoy building your planes and multi-rotors. I have purchased some and built others from your plans. The bloody baron is a must build.
JGZ IFLY That awesome format was created by Dan Sponholz. We love it too and plan to adopt it. We are so thankful for the amazing people from our community stepping up and helping us do better.
JB
Josh Bixler You guys got the ball rolling stimulating interest in all aspects of the flight RC hobby with your plans and kits. I commend you. I have watched and enjoyed all of your videos. My grandchildren have enjoyed building from your plans and flying them. I wish I was closer for a visit.
Josh. thank you for showing kids and adults how to build planes.I pearsonaly want to say thanks .I kinda poor and limited to what I can buy for my grandsons ,but this is great and they love your show you and your crew.God bless you
Well this 'Quick Build' has been rewarding and a nightmare challenge for me. Finally, I have a finished, balanced, great looking Bloody Baron! Cons FoamBoard is a great cheap material but you must be so creful and diligent when cutting and working with it. A Sharp Blade is a MUST. Ive found a sorce of 50 budget blades, each blade only good for about 3 long cuts. Next, your work surface must be kept impecably clean at all times, or you will end up scrapping the workpiece damaged with indentts. I am a pretty experienced builder and never got on with Hot Glue, it cools too quickly (I have a very good Glue Gun. So the answer is to use a waterproof PVA adhesive and Masking Tape. That gives you time to work and produces good results. OK it takes time to cure but patience is a virtue. The Power Pod is not deep enough to comfortably hold a 3S Lipo on Velcro so add another 5mm or about 1/4 inch depth. The front 2 BBQ Dowel positions interfere with internal Power Pod Lipo fitting, so I just used the middle dowel at a position to clear tyhe Lipo rear. The downward air intake will intefere with front internal Pod components, so make air intake holes in ply motor firewall or completely cut out the shaped air intake. PROs The Hot Glue trick on the foam edges works billiantly. There is ample space for Lipo, Gyro Stabilizer ESC and Rx inside the Power Pod . The complete model less electronics can be easily sprayed with 1 1/2 spray cans. My model is so pretty that I dont wat to crash it, so I easily fitted a full gyro stabliser module and starting with a 2S 1500mA Lipo. A couple of 50p coins glued behind the firewall sorted the COG balance. By the way, protect the Lipo from any protruding fireall motor mounting screw heads. Well this has been a scratch build, but I have a kit on the shelf to build with experience gained. Good Flying not a good starter building construction! By the way sanding block is much safer for the bevels and use Mylar hinges for a more accurate and robust build. Now Ive missed my swimming session!
great video! I'm really curious why in the world somebody would dislike this... but this is internet.
Built and flown this weekend, had 2 hard crashes and I need to repair the power pod now before it can go up again, also confirmed I'm definitely a beginner pilot :D
Thank you josh, camera man all staff what a great build video :)
Hi team, in Australia you can buy Z bend pliers.Might be a good item for the FT Crafty kit.
That was one of the best build videos I've seen in a long, long time! Very clearly explained, Josh; and seeing the plane flown immediately after the build is complete is a great way to wrap up an extremely informative video.
What a great plane design from a father and son team. I can see one of these being added to my fleet.

Thank you Josh for another amazing build video.
Mike Sheahan Thank Dan Sponholz! He's the designer behind this :)
A bottom on the fuse would greatly increase strength by closing the box. Could then do away with the rear weight of the doublers. Also encloses the battery so it does not detach on impacts.
I got the plans for this. I am a MISERABLE cutter of foam. My scoring goes through the paper from time to time.
Funny thing is back in the 80s when my buddy was alive I built balsa planes and he made them look good.
Anyhow I have a wing built with a packing tape leading edge.
Now all I have to do is afford a motor, speed controller etc. and also a Radio.
Really nice video. It would be helpful to see how/when to paint these.
This was a great vid. I'm actually glad you put the flight into the video. I was going to consider purchasing this plane but I'm looking for something slower due to the area I'm going to fly in.
Outstanding all around. I can't wait to find the best design for me and actually build my own!
Your door alarm kept going off as people in your shop was coming and going. At first I thought someone was coming and going in my house. Just thought it was funny. Nice to see more build up videos.
A very good build video for a nice compact model.. your videos keep improving, with better illustrations and a comprehensive talk through the build... keep up the good work...
Just ordered one of these! Thanks josh for another great vid!
Josh often mentions using sandpaper to shape the bevels. I would like to see a demonstration of this. As well as grit recommendations. And I'd like to just say thanks for all the great videos. 👍
Handley Machine Go back to other build videos he demonstrated often.
building this 6 years later. This plane is pretty fun for how easy it is to build.
i have seen two of your videos and already i can tell you love this hobby and are passionate about it. i have some experience with rc flying helicopters and drones but i think i will start looking into planes. thank you for the wonderful video
Another plane, another purchase, and another amazing flight.
Great tip for the fresh stick of glue! Thanks!
Doing the wing with three lines of glue first has the advantage of allowing the glue gun to keep up, trying to do all 5 lines at once caused my gun to not keep up with demand
I love your planes and they all fly like a dream 🛩
WOW Josh i think its amazing they way you share your 25 plus years of flight XP to us noobs to help get us started. I am new and plan on getting this kit after i get my 3 chan trainer from Amazon. i know hellis but not planes cant wait to support you and your crew!!!!
Tyler Curtis Dan S. Is ACTUALLY the designer...not Josh FYI
I have been watching so much FliteTest that a couple of days ago I had a dream about Josh Bixler.
I learned the hard way with a 600 size helicopter you want 2 throttle cuts. It's too easy to bump one switch. That and as soon as I power on the transmitter I verify the throttle stick is all the way down and BOTH throttle cuts are enabled. Plane, quad or helicopter - I do the above with all of them.
Josh makes it look SO easy....
Good build video. 5 likes and 4 dislikes! Appreciate how much work it is to make build video
Sailor john i agree Sailor John .. i was just woundering..does Dan and keegen get any of the money from the kits that are sold on the flite test store..??? Fite Test??
shawn campfield When I question the distribution of profits Freddy took offense. It would be appropriate if there was a gift of this kit to all volunteers at Flite fest
id agree..and a percentage to dan and keegan
shawn campfield Most of builders are satisfied with "recognition" , and contribute in appreciation for the collection of information and build technics (videos) provided at no cost by flitetest on youtube. Now that they are stressing community builds Flite test , there should be more information available.
Sailor john #scratchbuilding is a site that collects our videos and publish them as a collection
the mini bloody baron that kegan was holding I would love to see that as a kit
great build guys keep it going
you guys are awesome I hope you make more planes to build and fly
best 4channel on your channel
Esta FABULOSO ESTA Y EL AVIÓNSITO
Simply awesome...............
This is definitely going to be my next build. Just a quick question: Will the wing perform the same if the trailing edge is not cut in the wavy pattern? I'm trying to cut down on the build time, and somewhat lazy.
Well thts has been a largely rewarding scratch build and I now have a red sprayed almost completed Baron less some decals and electronics. Im having trouble with the power pod fitting mine was precision fitted but it would be better to leave a looser fit to enable easy tab locations. As not enough head room for an underslung Lipo without u/c it will have to fit inside the pod. I have made two spare pods and I think they will be useful as this is not a durable item. Considering the care to not damage the foam during build I dont think these are speed build. The Power Pod could do with a doubler on the base to make it more durable. Maybe BBQ dowels wpuld be better for Pod locarion rather than weak tabs
As a beginner in rc hobby I have a question, for the planes like these, is it safe for propeller to land these on concrete and roads as they don't have landing gear so the propeller may break easily?
You need to have a segment on Painting it, like what kind of paint, where can you get decals, etc...
Krylon, or any other spray paint
mikeinlutz search the channel...they've done that video 3 times...sheesh
Great video. Never flown a plane but I believe that I may have to order the kit and let this one be my first. I watched it several times but couldn't make out the transmitter that you use. Could you please link it.
Thank you
Mike
this is a great second or third plane.
+rob bennett There are plenty of people that have built and flown this as a first plane as well. If you stick to the smaller motor and a light setup, you can learn to fly RC with this plane. I learned to fly with the FT Bloody Wonder, and the Baron has very similar flight characteristics. That said, there are other planes that are better suited to beginners.
Daniel Sponholz I know you can but i wouldn't recommend it. But I've never flown the plane with the flitetest recommend motor and battery. Mine was a much bigger motor with a 2200 lipo. It was crazy fast and dropped like a rock with no throttle. I loved it. (bloody micks design)
When is there going to be a mighty mini versa wing?
Is that battery only holding on with that one piece of Velcro ? Great vid, keep up the great work
+Gavin Powell The Velcro that you get in the FT kits is enough to hold up to a 2200 mah 3s for sure. I've never had one come off in flight. Crashing, sure. Crazy aerobatics no. When I fly combat with my Barons and Wonders, I usually use a 1300 mah 3s/4s and I keep it inside the power pod. You can even stuff a 2200mah 3s in the pod. Just make sure that you put some cushion (I use foam) between the battery and the motor shaft and any screws that might turn your LiPo into a small explosive device.
Excellent 👌👌👌
love watching these videos magic
You guys are so awesome!
So aside from cutting badly I see some other things I didn't do. But I think it will fly eventually.....
At 6:17 I didn't understand the comment about not using BBQ skewer opening the relief line and adding glue for strength due to weight. It sounded like it was discouraged, then video showed the precut gap was filled with glue anyway. So even though you did not skewer it looked precut to achieve the same result?
You don't need to add that glue in the grooves. However, it makes the leading edge stronger and will hold shape better.
can you do some more hotwire cut planes like the viggin (:
Susan Walker Grumman X-29? ;)
Good Job! As a beginner can you explain what is the aerial combat?
is there any plans for this looks fun nice job guys
Awesome!
What a beauty!
Awsome, thank you.
This is great, but I am waiting for the versa copter to be available. I have some serious plans for what I think it is capable of.
Scott Perry It's coming very soon!!
FliteTest Good to hear. I can't wait. If you need some final beta testers, let me know. I would be glad to see what I can do with it. I have an account in your forum.
Today I built a better (much!) wing. No longer a terrible leading edge nor more overhang on one end.
you guys should test drive the rover revolution it cool😎
Mylar Control Surface hinges are much better than glue reinforced paper.
To reinforce the rudder flaps can i use clear tape on the outer part? im new and working on my first plane
Can I use cardboard instead of depron or foam board, by the way nice video 👌👌
Could you tell me which battery did you use? How many S, how many C and how many Volt does it have?
Hi mate, have you thought about building a plane made of air mattress such as Germans wingns from second war ? This might be very interesting project.
this build video is so bob ross... i love it
Who is watching in 2024
how do you land it on the battery? seems a bit risky
awesome
Kereeeen
Can we buy the Red Bloody Baron decals for this plane ?
What happened to your worktables? Took me a second to realize that this was filmed from the back/top and not as usual from the front...
Can you add a gyro stabilizer in these?
I'm new to this.. Does the power pod come with the kit? Or is it a seperate purchase? Also when reinforcing the hinges could i use foam tack glue instead? Thank you...
The power pod has to be bought separately to the kit and no idea about foam tack glue, make a test bevel edge and try it before you use the glue on the plane(just to make sure it works)
The electronics for the power pod need to be bought separately but the foam power pod comes with every swappable kit. The flitetest store also sells electronic kits that come with all of the electronic components (excluding the reciever) required to build a power pod.
What battery are you using
How many sheets of foam to scratch build this?
What kind of chalkboard do they use
i been trying to buy the foam packs...but it wont deliver to my country (malaysia)
why do you guys let the tips of the wings open?
+FliteTest I looked and can't find the link for the 6 tips for a maiden flight video you mentioned..
+mindwarp12 I think this is the episode you are looking for.
flitetest.com/articles/first-flight-quick-tips
+Daniel Sponholz Excellent, thanks!
me and my dad might get a mighty mini and we were wondering when the flight fest will be
I love the elevator music !
Cool build but I have a good suggestion. Use black foam board (with the white insides) next time. That way we can see what your doing in the video easier.
All I need know is a big 55" FT-Aerobatic Edge 540 : )
what battery would you use If you choose the c pack
I believe in this video they said a 3s 2200.
is there going to be a mini bloody baron build?
That would actually be kind of cool. It would be a nano Barron!
There is a scratch build version that Sponz designed and is available on the Flitetest.com forum. I built one and it flys great. It uses the mini 250 quad size motors.
+meckster28 It is called the Baby Baron. :)
meckster28 they've already made it it's in the bloody baron reveiw video
Please make dlg from depron
Do a review on the Flyzone L-39
+Clint Hodnett I wouldn't wonder if an episode of those is coming out today. They had a Periscope with two L39's a few days ago.
i would highly appreciate anyone's aid.
I have a zmr frame,6×4,5 prop and a 4s battery...So far am searching for motors that would easily carry 4kg load on my quad...
i don't know the 900kv-700kv, 600kv-400kv or 300kv-200kv would be a good setup to start with.
+FliteTest what is the approximate weight of the airframe?
+kardRatzinger AUW (All Up Weight) with a 1300 mah 3s is approximately 18 oz (510 g). Weight without battery is approximately 14.1 oz (400 g).
Where can I download plans for the Bloody Baron?
forum.flitetest.com/showthread.php?15270-Bloody-Baron-Build
here ya go!
Thanks.
Kit
Nice video on how’s but no good for deaf r/c flier because video do not contain closed captioned for deaf to follow directions on assemble plane ... please put CC on video ...
I really wanna get into flying, is this a good starter rc??
jonas You might want to start with something with a little less power and complexity. Look at the tiny trainer. It is what you need to learn to fly with.
Where do you get foam that has paper on?
19:18 = TRUTH!
Sometimes I wish josh would do a scratch build from idea to maiden without a lazier cutter to teach real building .
