    Pete we had a party that wanted to vote online for every issue in the Netherlands , the problem is that most people aren’t informed well and a lot of people won’t vote which leads to only the extremist voting.
    Btw I also recommend looking into the Dutch system. It does fix a lot of the issues the two party system has. Everyone can start their own party without needing a lot of money and even if they only get some votes, they can still join the coalition and get some of their points through, this way even a small group has a voice. Can’t explain the whole system here but there are youtube videos on it. Its definitely not a perfect system but if you’re looking for a better system this could be a start

    Complete agreement that the most important part of politics isn't the individual parties, but the system in which the votes are cast. It's a major issue with how the US voting system works. There isn't much difference between the 2 parties. It just seesaws between the Conservatives and Labour giving the illusion that we have a democracy. My guess is that there is a powerful business elite behind the scenes who are the real puppet masters. How we can change the political system is an interesting question. Kinda late to the converstation Pete. I feel you make an interesting point about how there is no conversation about electoral reform, or at least it is small. I would love for you to flesh out your solutions to the problem.
    I feel the US political system is intentionally frustrating so it takes a lot to make change happen. Part of this frustration comes from the division of powers to keep the power among numbers of people and not small groups. This is with good reason, large changes come with large consequences. This system is designed to take a lot of effort to make notable change. The idea of everyone having immediate involvement in goverment kind of scares me. The pace of goverment will move much more rapidly, possibly outpacing the time it takes to come to reasonable conclusions. What if people are acting out of their prejudices, or they are convinced by media or industry? I feel the danger of making erroneous decisions is there.
    I would love to hear counterpoints. Ultimately Pete, I think you should discuss structure, what ideas do you have for a better system. What holds the system in place? Interesting discussion.

    Just to add to the political system discussion: in Europe we’ve had some bouts with direct democracy (referendum) with a few issues, best example is the Brexit. Not to sound to elitist, but a lot of people really don’t know how to vote (they are scared, easily distracted from main issues). I truly believe direct democracies would be a bad solution.
    And to be quite honest, democracies like the one in the Netherlands are a good example of a multi-party system that actually gets things done in a matter that is pretty representative. It requires actual representation from citizens while maintaining a layer of career politicians just below the governing bodies that is largely non-affiliated but are actual professionals in their field. It would be great if we could somehow use the same system on a larger scale, but I’m worried we will only get this far if there is ever a substantial and direct threat to our existence. As per the plot of Watchmen 😂

Countries that have tried to be economically "equal" in the past have been socialist (aka communist) countries where everyone was poor regardless of their job and how hard they worked. If someone is upset about their financial situation in the States, (not a Canadian but imagine its the same) there is nothing stopping you from working hard and earning more money. Regarding Not voting: I'm absolutely convinced that it is better to vote for the least bad of all choices then not voting. Otherwise you strengthen the even worse choice indirectly. But anyway I am with you that the political system with 2 parties is a total crap and no true democracy. You should have real choices between real alternatives. That you have in most European countries like e.g. mine, Germany. I really don't like some of the "alternatives" we have here (the extreme right got really strong in many european countries last years) but you see a change. Your vote has a visible impact. But don't expect to have much better govemments then. The extreme parties mostly on right wing some on left wing are not doing a better job mostly even worse. What we lack is not change in political system but a change in peoples education. The majority of people unfortunately is to dumb, egoistic and fearful for our complex world. I doubt you’ll respond since this is over a week old now but how reconcile your “we should all love each other” philosophy with your non-voting stance. To me they seem quite contradictory, since some political groups seem hell bent on “eradicating” (their words) specific groups.
    Like, I hate the current system, but when I hear one party talk about and actually implement horrific things (see genital inspection in Kansas, Florida/Texas kidnapping children), I feel like I am compelled to vote for the other party. Not voting just seems complicit in it all, and contradicts (imo) the “everyone be friends” doctrine.
    Idk I would love to hear your explanation.

      @FreePete  Před rokem

      The simple explanation is that I don't see any side as meaningfully different. I don't think my vote matters at all in a long term material sense. I think if I'm being honest with myself that we are all a slave of this system and up to and including the moment that change of the system on a structural level is part of the discussion there is no point in me lying to myself and pretending my action of voting matters.

    I gotta say though, I disagree with this notion that we are living enslaved. Compared to what? Peak utopian humanity? Or maybe being literally owned my another individual? This idea that we can be objectively free, I find naive. Freedom is something you can only obtain for yourself internally. It is a solely subjective state of being, one that every individual must decide for themselves. Because the fact is economically, you and I are living in the lap of luxury and comfort from an historic perspective, yet there are people's and cultures on earth today who live in abject poverty who live far happier lives than us. I would go so far as to say that if this is slavery, then I don't want to be free. I eat my fill everyday, and get as much entertainment I want daily. I have many loved ones, who enrich my life, and who give my life warmth and meaning. And sure I have to go to work everyday to pay for things, but I'd have to work (and harder) in any human society, with or without money or government.

    I think your political solutions are too mired in your philosophy background and not rooted enough in history. Real systemic change is very difficult and tends to come after either a violent revolution (which trends negative change ultimately) OR through coalition-building working with established political institutions. In the United States, the greatest systemic changes have resulted from coalition-building working within political institutions. Look at the Progressive reforms of the late 19th/early 20th century. Now, conservative Americans are trying to walk back from those institutional reforms using gerrymandering and the courts with mixed success. If you want to see representation change, you have to work to build a coalition. The best way to do this is through political discourse and voting.
