The tale of William the Conqueror is written down by numerous contemporaries with various perspectives. It's a tale that would inspire some while fascinate and even terrify others. It’s a tale of a man from a seemingly small land rising to rule one of the most powerful, stable kingdoms in all of Europe at the time, a kingdom that would sow the seeds of an empire that would sprout many centuries later.

Interesting story, hadn't know much about William the Conqueror, but the same sounded familiar. Great content and presentation, thanks for making the video!
Fun fact. About 60% of Americans today are his direct descendant. He is on both sides of my family.
As a French-Canadian, descended from Normans, William the Conqueror is my new hero.
Nice! One of my descendants is related to William the Conqueror
Fabulous video 😊
Great , thank you. It’s said that Matilda refused him a couple of times because she did not think him good enough for her rank. He went to the church she was attending and pulled her off her horse and, allegedly , gave her a few whacks for good measure. The rough wooing must have worked because it impressed her . They ended up with a happy marriage and about 9 children - even though she was quite tiny. Don’t know if it’s fact or not but it’s mentioned often 👵👵👵👵🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Am I correct in saying he was a decendant of Rolo the famous Viking who was given Normandy?
Also love the channel :)
yes
Rollo was his great great great grandfather.
Vive Guillaume ! Vive la Normandie !
One man's ego ruined things for an entire nation, things haven't changed much
Things were going so well for old Harold too until the arrow in the eye.
Jon snow is based on William the conqueror

Greatest king of England ever!
@Bo Dasen Norman, actually.
@@justawhisperintheuniverse8257 I don't think he was the worst, but I don't think he was the best either (assuming you're ranking them). I think Henry II's development of English Common Law makes a strong argument in his favour. I don't know if he's the best either, but he's the one I'd argue for if push came to shove.
@Bo Dasen Just clarifying that he was the Duke of Normandy, not like it was a whole French invasion. If that were he case, England would have become part of France. Also... like, what country do you think I am to have been invaded?
@@jeandehuit5385 It's not a contest. It's only a contest when they are alive and want to be king.
@@justawhisperintheuniverse8257 Well, when you say 'greatest ever' then you *are* ranking them.
I called it a 'contest' b/c ranking them is a relatively pointless exercise that often ignores the political consequences at the time (not all Kings were dealt the same hand, after all). But it can be a fun one.
Hence, why I disputed the ranking. There's a degree of subjectivity anyway, obvs. But since there aren't really any consequences anyway, I thought I'd make the argument.
