- "Misty" is arguably one of Johnny Mathis' signature tune, so the song needs no introduction. But I wasn't fully versed of the historical aspect of this song that I always attributed to Mr Mathis. First I was surprised that it wasn't Mr. Mathis version that garnered the song a Grammy award; amazingly, it was Ray Steven. His 1975 interpretation of the classic took home the award for Music Arrangement of the Year. Another surprise for me was that it wasn't Johnny Mathis version of "Misty" that was played by Clint Eastwood's DJ character in the movie, "Play Misty For Me." It was the original Instrumental version of Misty by the Erroll Garner Trio. I need to really watch the movie. LOL. But one thing I do know Johnny's version is a classic and my favorite.

Unlike the majority of older popular artists who often need to lower the key of their original recordings by a whole step or more, Mr. Mathis is singing in the same key he sang “Misty” when he was 23 yrs. old. Coupled with his awareness and control of his current vocal instrument…well, that’s the sign of authentic artistry.
The high note he sings in this “live” performance is the same A-natural he sang “live” in 1958.

I am in my 70s I remember as a girl I was so in love with his voice, and he still has that beautiful voice. I still love his voice
When I noticed him drop the line at 2:03 in another video of a recent "Misty" performance, I thought he had momentarily blanked. I now realize he's giving himself some time to get his voice properly placed for the falsetto "on" at 2:13. The care he's obviously taken of his instrument, and knowing its limitations at this stage of his career, are doubtless the reasons he's still able to perform at such a high level even as he approaches 90. The term "national treasure" gets tossed around a lot, but Mathis truly deserves the title. (Now where's his Kennedy Center Honor, already... LL Cool J has one, but not Johnny???)

thats not a dropped line, that pause before the high note was always how he has sung it.
@@borgullet3376 You're right, but I'm also not wrong. In his recorded version of the song, he doesn't sing ANY of the bridge. Since he does sing most of it here, but dropped the line "don't you notice how hopelessly I'm lost... that's why I'm following you", it at first sounded to me like it might not have been intentional. Now, however, I'm fairly certain it was, in an effort to ensure he nailed the note at 2:13.
I understand you now. I always remembered the original recording had the string interlude just before he hits that high note Thank goodness we still have him here

That man's voice was the loving glue that brought so many couples together, every time we heard his voice.
I was born in 1947, and he became the first real, beautiful sound most of us heard as teenagers.
Whenever anyone speaks of CLASSIC. Johnny Mathis has always been the standard of love for all to cherish.
The applause when he hit the high note was so well deserved. He's taken great care of that unique voice. We're all thankful for that. Wishing him many more years of success.

That gorgeous voice hasn't lost any of its uniqueness or beauty. Unlike many "singers" of today, as soon as Johnny opens his mouth to sing, you know who it is. Like a lot of the singers from yesteryear.

Awww! I always loved him growing up. My mom would put his Christmas album on and decorate the house and I would get so excited!! I’m 51 and Johnny was one of my mom’s favorites. She’s been gone along time now and this is a show I need to see before it’s too late for either one of us. I haven’t seen his set list but I’m pretty sure there’s gonna be at least 1 that’ll have my eyes running during his show.
