- Lake Travis High School Cavalier Band playing their halftime show- has their entire tuba section fall like dominoes backwards one at a time into a giant pile. They immediately got up and went on with the show! (nobody was hurt but two tubas did get damaged)
Yes band geeks, they are actually sousaphones but seriously 'Seven Sousaphone Pileup' = BORING. True that only six fell over but there were seven on the field.
This is Lake Travis High School Cavalier Band from Austin, Texas. - Hudba
That one tuba still going was like "I got this guys I got this"
That is what happens when you roll back on your heels while Marching backwards
Casey Broome If you watch the replay you can see that he didn't fall back on his heels, his problem was that his weight was all the way back so when he took the restep to go backwards he was already falling back. Plus the weight of the instrument, there was no way he could have recovered.
The problem was the field, which was very slippery.
Edit: But it was also the direction change that did it.
Ex-ACTLY
The experts have entered the building. Sometimes people just fall.
@@NYESOX nah, if you slow down the speed and watch, they messed up cuz of the direction change, and weren't properly prepared for it
*AND...* this is why you should never let your heels hit the ground... (while marching backwards) but we can all agree that this the *best* recovery of all in marching band right??
thats 5 laps when they get back from the game
@@random-mistakes-4286 Felt that harder than anything.
It’s so funny you said that because it’s the direction change and weight shift that caused that, not rolling up on their heels you can clearly see that, 💀
AND THATS WHY YOU NEVER LET HEELS HIT THE GROUND!! STAY ON YOUR FRICKIN TOES ITS NOT HARD
Being a tuba player, I cringed REALLY badly. Sousas are heavy and expensive and that must’ve been super painful for them, glad to see that they still had the spirit to get back up keep going.
lol my band director would care more for the sousaphone rather than the player, but its a joke tho lol
@@JfarmFS because the sousaphones do be coming out of their paycheck and not the children🥱😎😳
You gots to stay on them platforms
Even just as someone who loves music and instruments, this was painful to watch😞
I already play trumpet and I wanna play both tuba and trumpet so I tried playing the sousaphone for the first time and it was a hassle to even hold and I can’t imagine what this is like for multiple heavy instruments all piling up on each other
Good thing this wasn't at a competition oh my god
Or was it? ;)
it wasn't
anybody else notice they fell in time?
At least they were in time.
well if they were marching in time there would be no reason they wouldnt fall in time
@@anglegrinder that’s not even the reason they fell it’s the direction/weight change SMH🤦♂️
great video, definitely one of those moments in life you will never forget lol
Especially when you want to forget it
I was at this game filming it. God what a night
Quote from the band director: "You are the most famous marching band in the world"
As a sousa player, this is pretty much my greatest fear whenever I have to march backwards. That said, they were in time (meaning even step sizes), and picked themselves back up well. Sometimes this happens. It's all about the recovery.
It was funny how you slowly heard less and less of the sousaphone part the more they fell down XD
Could not have planned it better! 1984 I was the band director at LTHS - the 5th in 4 years! Nice to see they have come a long way (other than the tub-jam).
it looks to me like he didnt fall because of rolling back on his heels, he started to fall before the transition. rather, he prematurely began moving his upper body in anticipation of the touch and go. as he leaned back, he lost his balance.
also sousas are heavy as heck and that doesnt help with the balance situation
yeah but isnt there like multiple types of sousa sizes because at my HS we have 3 Large sousas and 2 smaller ones
Having survived three years of marching band in high school, my heart goes out to the the tuba line. My question is, "What choreographer in his right mind would ask tuba players to march in reverse?"
Christopher Hawley a really good one!
Pretty much every one
im march sousaphone in highschool and in our show this year most of my moves are backwards marching.
???
I fell tonight. I got reminded of this
k here's the thing: when your a sousaphone player it makes sense to fall and have trouble getting back up because the instruments are large and heavy. when a trumpet or other low brass player falls/stumbles (or any other instrument for that matter) its normally expected for them to get right back up and try not to pile up. They played it off sooo well! Im impressed.
With trombones you have to be careful, if you fall you need to make sure your slide is okay depending on how you fell, usually sousas are expected to get back up,
surpisingly, this makes me even more proud to represent LT
"Get in the form!" The one who didn't fall down- "but..."
When you do good you'll be forgotten in a few years but when you do that and no one will ever forget you!
Our band teacher makes us do push-ups when we drop our mouthpiece,I wonder how much they would have to do?
TUBAS STILL ROCK!
Congrats on the one who got back up and kept going!!!
The funny thing is is that i know the person who fell
Dude same
Davi Sparks who?
No you don’t
I play the sousa for my university's marching band in South Dakota. Its fun, and marching backwards is pretty tricky. I noticed that some of them weren't marching with only their toes backwards, which is why the first guy tripped (it's a common mistake). Also it was an incredibly fast song to march to, and for that only being a high school, that was quite impressive.
UPDATE: Good Morning America is featuring the Cavalier band on Monday 2/24/14 on a new segment called Do-Overs. They will perform on LIVE TV marching a show created for them by the director of the famous Ohio State band.
The one sousaphone behind all of them was probably like, "Uuuhh..."
For being best friends with someone who plays tuba, I can only imagine the pain-
But They all tried to recover from falling as quick as possible so props to them
It probably scared the shit out of them, I would if I were to fall with my sousa lol
Tuba players at Lake Travis High School in Austin, Texas, do it with style!
Proud of them for having so much precision, they met and fell in perfect time and order. It proves they have the right stuff!
as someone who used to play in a marching band I must say lol just kidding they wouldnt take me, they said I was too good *puts on dark glasses, holds back tears*
oh god i play tuba and my first competition is tomorrow if this happens i will die
not die just ull never live it down ahahaha
What's really impressive was that they were able to recover and continue marching
I play sousaphone and I watched this before one of our games
You have got to be the most respectable band parent in the marching band universe.
one of these guys was a student teacher at my school! love you mr gleason!!
0:06 look how coordinated their falls are. They're able to keep in time with the piece
SOMEONE DROPPED THE BASS!
feedusafetus dropped the brass
i dont know why but i cant stop watching this.
That's why I play trumpet.
Still one of my favorite vidoes to pull up every once in a while
OMB (I'm laughing so hard I can hardly type!!!) - too funny. THanks for posting it made my day! (hope everyone was okay...)
I would have PAID to see this live! Dude, you made my day!
Glad there are a lot of nice comments. Our band works really hard. It's unfortunate, but pretty funny this happened.
Man, the field was really slick though!
We're at 1.5 MILLION views on CZcams and still counting (but slower). WOW this has been an amazing ride- I'm just a normal guy who was filming his friends when something extraordinary happened. I posted the video at 11:35pm then texted the link to TWO friends in the band. By 9am the next morning= over 2000 views and took on a life of its own. It's going to be featured on truTV's Top 20 Funniest and MTV's Ridiculousness w/Rob Drydek plus similar shows in other countries around the world.
I play the tuba as well, and I can say that if this happened to my section, we would be laughing WAY too hard at ourselves to continue on as well as these guys did.
Gotta love Lake Travis lol, BOA Austin was a blast :)
Oh my gosh the poor sousas :c
Their director, Mr. Hicks, was our old director at Dobie High School last year before he got a job there
Never gets old 😂
Miss performing these shows while Mr. Vice was there. Gotta Love it. Go Cavs!
Way back when in the early 80s, one of our tubas lost the bell when he was swinging the tuba and it flew off. Too funny, but this...I can't stop laughing.
cudos on a quick recovery by the tumbling tubas...and some fancy footwork from the brass section to avoid a bigger pileup!
Everyone talking about the tubas, but did anyone see that Mello on the bottom left almost take a fall at 0:04?
saw this on Diane Sawyer. Then my teacher showed this today.........Can't imagine how much heat the SOUSAPHONES got after this
The show must go on...nice job band!
The music just TOTALLY sets the mood =P
My sister looked over my shoulder as we were reading your comment and she's like, "You are a clarinet? Oh my goodness!!" LOL
we only had three tubas, nt much to worry about there
I thought it was wrong of ESPN to air this as often as they did on sports center. These are kids. Mistakes happen. Kudos to them for getting right back up and acting like it never happened. Also good job to the audience for not laughing hysterically at their performance. Very professional
Got up like some bosses!!! This happened to my school in a circle rotation too at contest a few years ago.
Even though it's always sad when brass instruments get damaged, I'm glad only two were and not more, and I'm glad that this assumingly didn't interfere with your competition season.
You know the funny thing, I was at that game playing for the austin high band, (the opposing team), and I saw this happen. I wake up the next morning and its on national news.
my band conductor led me to this video... calling it a must see for tubists. But damn that band has a Lot of tubas -we have more tubas than tubists so mad jelly of all of those tuba bros
got back up swiftly, very professional
this is my school! :) #proud
I love that my highschool's claim to fame is a CZcams hit
Haha, I play alto-sax for the RRHS band, and our band was talking NON-STOP about this video! Many of us saw it happen live as well-
lol. band stuff :) one time the bottom half of my clarinet just freaking fell off during a competition i bent over in mid-march, picked it up and kept marching. it was hilarious.
I wanted to add (CZcams limits comment lengths), that the incident occurred at 2 minutes and 20+ seconds into an 8+ minute show and the kids picked themselves up, brushed themselves off, and continued with poise and did not let the fall effect their concentration during the remainder of the show.
This to me shows the heart of a champion. Looking forward to BOA San Antonio where you can show that heart.
With
As a freshman that got out of his first marching season, this hurts to see.
Kudos to them getting right back up and finishing the routine!
Oh my gosh. Poor kids! Good dedication though!
It's zoomed in because the video is edited. If you look at the original video of the show on his channel, you can see that it's not planned at all.
That's why I did concert band. I got two left feet so marching with a sousaphone tuba would definitely mean falling for me!
Marching backwards with a sousaphone on slick terrain is very difficult so I give those kids props for being able to get back up. The worst is high winds though, the bell acts like a wind sail and can carry you away if you don't stand your ground haha
Thanks to this video we were on the great GOOD MORNING AMERICA DO OVER BEST SCHOOL YEAR EVER
Well, as much as it sucks that they fell upon one another I will say that they had a really good sound and seemed to have an interesting show. I'd like to see more. :3 Oh, and points to the Tubas for getting right back up and continuing the show.
It's crazy watching this while its at 100 views and then loking back 5 days later and its at 1 million views.
I march that show and as soon as i saw this my first response was "oh"
that didn't happen bc they rolled back on their heels; it happened because of the transition from forward to backwards marching at a fast tempo
Orange Piano no it's the heels
As a tuba I can tell you it’s the heels
BOA Austin. Almost went to that one but we competed at Mansfield instead
Dude at contest yesterday we had a trumpet pileup. It's funny now that we watched the video.
My son plays Sousa for University of Cincinnati after playing for Lakota West marching band! They did great picking up and moving on! Kudos to them.
Dis is glorious.
i think the greatest thing about this, is the music the band is playing in the background and how perfectly it lines up. hehe get it... line up...
When I was in hs we had a flute pile up during a back up maneuver that will live on in infamy
We keep telling our tubas not to pull a "lake travis", hell, even they say it to each other. XD this is never gonna get old
I'm watching this over and over at 3 am oh God what has become of my life???
(I hope everyone and their tubas were okay.)
I wonder how bad woud had been, if they all had those marching Tubas you carry on your shoulder in stead of the sousaphone.
He just lost his footing as he was about to go backwards... My director always tells us that no matter what happens, keep marching!
The one player who escaped the pile: I see no god up here, other than me
At least the music didnt stop, hope all tuba players kept playing.
I March the sousaphone along with 2 others and this is my worst nightmare
Jessica Kancler lol I march Sousa with 11 others
Why does this oddly feel proud about my band seeing this video. It may be a shameful thing but it’s cool we got 1.9million views of recognition😂😂
Oh, the joys of marching band.
This happened at my school at the game last thursday
Kazue Shion's Flashback be like-
Did anyone else noticed the Mello player that had the wide spacing problem at the very beginning of this video also slipped a little backwards?
I think they were amazing for getting right back up
Guys, keep calm and march on
They actually sound really good. I wonder if the sousaphones were playing at the time because I didn't really hear a decrease in volume.
