  • Gustave the Killer Crocodile is a Nile Crocodile that is rumored to have killed 300 people. Gustave's more realistic kill count is more just over 60 people but the stories locals tell about him are extremely interesting.
I'll be doing a short 4-5 videos series over Man-eaters / animals that became human serial killers. So if you're interested in this stuff please subscribe and talk about some cool stuff with me!

Hey, nice job on the video. A few things I wanted to note that you brought up, as I actually wrote a book which looked at the claims of Gustave.
1.) Patrice Faye has openly said that the 300 number is false. In a book called Crazy River: Exploration and Folly in East Africa, Patrice stated “This is not true, I have records. I have investigated every case for eleven years, and Gustave has only killed sixty people, maybe even less”.
I think what started the 300 number controversy is that Patrice stated before that "I calculated that if he had been killing people for 20 years at this rate, he would have already eaten more than 300 people." However, this was just a casual calculation on Patrice's part, not an actual statistic that was documented. Obviously since this number gains more attention, media sources ran with it, and the 300 # stayed popular.
2.) Brandon Sideleau, a croc expert who runs the Worldwide Crocodilian Attack Database, told me that a documentary crew visited Burundi in 2004 to investigate the attacks, and most stories led to dead ends. He also brought up how many pictures of Gustave online are obviously different crocodiles, not a single individual. Brandon is very skeptical of the story of Gustave in general, and thinks that a number of attacks occurred during a period of time (obviously nowhere near 300), and a large crocodile was blamed, whether it was responsible or not. Brandon told me of a similar story of a Saltwater Crocodile that had claims of killing people for several decades, but the crocodile was only confirmed to have killed one person, which was the person the croc killed before he was finally put down.
3.) It is true that crocodilians can live several decades, perhaps up to 100 years. However, an individual who has a long length does not necessarily mean that they are old. Many crocodilians that grow to large sizes are just individuals that were able to grow fast when they were younger. If the animal has favorable genetics, lives in a warm habitat, has plenty of food, and little competition, then it will grow to large lengths much faster. So the 60 year old estimate seems likely.

Honestly since his food source was reduced & forced to be basically only humans & extremely large mammals such as hippos & most likely other large crocodile aswell , I think his kill count isn't exaggerated at all mainly because of the fact that they were not only one of his only food sources but also his easiest food source & his extremely massive size would require a lot more humans to fill his belly than other crocodiles would need to fill they'res so it would make a lot more sense that his human kill count could possibly be even way higher than 300 if u actually think logically about it especially considering crocodiles are some of the most extremely territorial & relentless & extremely intelligent predators in general & Gustavo was also extremely elusive like he's shown in the 2004 documentary which means he knew exactly when to avoid certain humans & when to ambush & attack them which makes perfect sense especially after being shot by soldiers with machine guns , high powered rifles & even a RPG launcher which is the documented actual cause of his shoulder scar which would also explain why he was scared of the sound of exploding grenades!!!! He obviously wouldn't fear the sound of explosions near him considering he lived in a warzone that lasted decades but after taking a Rock Propelled Grenade to his shoulder , it would explain why he started finally fear the sound of them because any smart animal or human would do the exact same thing especially after being wounded by something that made the same exact type of boom/sound !!!! So I think that's part of the reason why he became even more extremely elusive after his attempted capture back in 2004 & why he continued to claim that territory as his own & continued his killing spree years after the civil war got intense in Burundi after that documentary until he finally left his territory around 2009!!!! Africa is a huge place full of connecting rivers & lakes to travel to & hide out in & find new food sources so being as intelligent as Gustavo was , me & many other people think he most likely fled his own territory because of the civil wars going on at that time just like most villages fled alot of those areas as well & because he was shot at once too many times & decided to finally flee his own stomping grounds!!!! It's a very good possibility he could be dead but there is also a equal possibility that war is just too much for any one individual to stay put in after so long including a 25 foot apex predator so there is a equal possibility that he just relocated considering he was estimated to be no older then 50 or 60 yrs old during that 2004 documentary so there's a very good possibility that he still could be out there in another territory with him now being roughly 70-80 years old & still surviving in a deeper more secluded area of middle Africa today away from humans & the sounds of gunfire & constant explosions everywhere!!!!! People have to remember that this species of predator has survived longer than any other Apex predator along with sharks so take that in mind before you just assume anything because he was still quite young & extremely over his natural size for his age & that was not really that long ago if you consider a crocodiles life span which is actually longer than the average human beings is 👍

I worked on farms as a gamekeeper when late teens, eatly 20s. We found a rat king skeleton once while digging up a rat sett and killing them all. Ny boss just looked at around a dozen skeletons all stuck together bt their tails and grunted rat king. He had a theiry about man eaters and had seen it in other animals suddenly attacking their predators.(i mentioned the rat king thing cos he was either mad or gery knowledgeable and cos hed soent 40+ year working with wnimals qnd hunting vermin for the farm, i fully believe the katter, he taught me a lot) when an animal becomes a man killer or starts attacking its natural predator its cos their instinct and genes tell it to be afraid of the man(we used to hunt them for millenia, so its fully built into thwm to fear us) but when a large cat or wolf etc is starved or injured to the point where it will attack anything. They turn on the nearest thing and if thats a man, they will question their age old genetic instict literally thinking "why am i scared of this thing? It was easy to catch, couldnt fight back and had a lot of meat on them" and so thinks "who's next?" When i said we dont get many big cats in UK, he laughed and said he had seen rats turn into cat hunters and smaller predatory birds like sparrow hawks tru to take on kesteals or red kites cos they had ate one once, and that it doesn't last for long. He was basiing his knowledge on how other small predators will sometimes turn and focus on the tging that had hunted them instead of running like they were supposed to and he thought it was cos the first time a rat had killed a cat it had been badly injured or sick and the rat wasnt smart enough to realise he hadn't done all the work. So got a huge boost of confidence and decided to turn the tabkes, just as most man killer cats have been found to have old mouth or leg injury meaning they turned on the first man out of desperation and then didnt have the sense to realise we have weapons etc.
It made a lot of sense to me, and even after i laughed at him about the lack of big cats here, he still sat and explained it. Dunno of its right or ots simply just that all man killer cats are just too injured to hunt properly and so chose a simple kill, but that doesn't explain why they dont all hunt us cos animals want the easiest meal. He was a strange man who loved animals more than people but everything else he taught me was true😊
