How To Set The Base Timing On a RB26 | R32 Skyline GTR

  • Hey everyone, in this video I show you how to use a timing light to set the base timing on a RB26DETT. It can be confusing to some since the engine uses coil on plug. So this is how you adjust the timing on an engine that uses no spark plug wires. See what you need below...

    I was wondering why that random loop wire was hanging out in back, i thought it was just part of other sketchy wiring lol. Awesome vid of course, thanks!

    so cars coming from japan that are expecting a slightly higher octane only require this timing adjustment to run on stock ecu?

    Did you take any additional procedures before removing it to paint your valve covers? Did you just install the CAS after the cover install? Wondering if any additional measuring needs to be done before and soon after reinstalling the CAS and before the timing light measuring procedure..

    • @Goodezilla
      @Goodezilla  Před 4 lety

      I just marked the position of the Cas and put it back on where it was close. Then did the timing light to verify / adjust.

  • @mrp32gtr

    Getting "engine position error" from my ECU. Code is CAS and i removed it before do makes sense. Now i can not get it to work. Starting to get really frustrated about it, have this strange "pfyssh" sound coming from my intake side when touching tha gas. Can feel the sound in ny fuel rail. Think its related to bad timing.

    • @Goodezilla
      @Goodezilla  Před 3 lety

      Dunno about the sound, but sounds like your CAS could be bad.

  • @curtisyoung8218
    @curtisyoung8218 Před 8 lety

    If the base timing is slightly out can that cause the car to lose power but still idle and run smoothly, or would that be ECU pulling the timing as you increase the revs while driving. Cause my R34 with a Rb25det feels noticibaly slower and running richer after i got it back from the tuner and it did have the CAS removed so i was thinking it may have been put back slightly out.

    • @Goodezilla
      @Goodezilla  Před 8 lety

      It is possible. If the base timing is off, it will throw the rest of the timing off too. I think the RB25 has variable timing, atleast the later versions do, so it constantly adjusts the cam timing as well as ignition timing.

    Great video, thanks. Subscribed. One question though: I can't find the loop wire that you connect to (at 3:20) on my 1989 R32 GTR. Can you provide any tips?

    • @Goodezilla
      @Goodezilla  Před 4 lety

      You can remove the first cylinder coil pack and attach a spark plug wire and hook the timing light to that.

  • @RYLIK_89
    @RYLIK_89 Před 7 lety

    I really dont understand the whole timing belt test what does it keep you from doing on the road if not correct?. I understand most of the maintenance. but all I see is a strobe light on a timing belt, I also noticed 6 lines, am I suppose to notice these lines and where are these lines on the belt? or coming from the timing light gun?

    • @Goodezilla
      @Goodezilla  Před 7 lety

      Brandon Martinez this video shows how to set the base timing. The timing belt is not part of the process. The timing belt is under the engine covers and connects the cam gears to the crank to keep them in time/sync.
      The lines on the crank pulley are timing marks. 0,5,10,15,20,25,30 degrees. And you use the timing light to know when the engine is at top dead center (it strobes ). So you line the mark in the crank pulley up with the mark on the engine block cover by turning the cam angle sensor.

  • @GlanzaMike69
    @GlanzaMike69 Před 4 měsíci

    Hi, it looked like you turned your CAS clockwise to correct this, is that correct? It's just you said you needed to advance? But i think clockwise is supposed to retard the engine? i'm adjusting mine Tomorrow and would like to know for sure before i start. Thanks.

    • @Goodezilla
      @Goodezilla  Před 4 měsíci

      You would turn it whichever way you need to get the timing on the correct mark.

  • @amritcheema1955

    I am struggling to undsrstand
    Ok so gun light come on when first cyclinder fires but how you know about marks 4 5 6 or whatever
    Is it light shine and how many marks you see ?

    • @Goodezilla
      @Goodezilla  Před 5 lety

      The light will shine when cylinder 1 spark fires. So you shine the light on the crank pulley and see which mark on the crank is lining up with the mark on the timing cover. The 5th mark is 20 degrees. Adjust your CAS until the marks line up.

    • @amritcheema1955

    Whats your Rpm when you adjust it ? i did adjust mine to 20 Degrees but found it i had 1120rpm on idle(varm engine ) and thats too high. so 20 degrees will therefor be wrong. correct would be to adjust to 950rpm first then adjust to 20 degrees

    • @Goodezilla
      @Goodezilla  Před 7 lety

      My idle was normal. I'm not sure 200rpm would make a difference. The engine shouldn't be advancing any timing at idle unless you've got another issue going on.

    • @gav240z
      @gav240z Před 5 lety

      What is normal idle speed? I found my 260RS (RB26DETT) car is idleing at around 1000rpm. Even though I wound the AAC valve all the way out. Can't seem to set it lower.

      It may be because I had a wiring Specialties harness. The more accurate way is to use a sparkplug wire between the first cylinder coil and plug for timing light signal.
