Why is the Honda Accord So Hated?

  • Hondas are some of the most fun cars to build. They are light weight, have an insane amount of engine options, and are a great way to start out your car loving career. With the Honda Civic usually being the preferred Honda platform for builds - one sometimes gets overlooked. The Honda Accord is a rare sight to see with engine swaps or turbo builds anymore, and I think that is a real shame. This H23 swapped Honda Accord shows you can take this generation Accord and truly make something special - so let's talk about it.

I daily a 97 EX sedan with 322k on it. Amazingly well put together car. My sweetheart car is a 1990 Accord EX that I manual swapped then rebuilt the engine in. The general consensus is that the 4th gen was the most favorite Accord followed by 3rd then 5th. 5th gen is nice, but the interior quality materials and design started cheapening a little bit more compared to 3rd and 4th due to the economy at the time so cost cutting was evident, though it did become more modern in design that previous gens. I also think 90-93 had a more aggressive design. I had a 91 wagon before that that had a Accord type R h22 red top with a t2w4 lsd manual in it.. that thing was spectacular, and I kept the AC and PS. Sounds like the 4th gen Si lude transmission isn't the best match for vtec in this car.. gears are way too long. The best combination is to get a h22 trans and use the Accord 5th gear so it's not revving 4k @ 80mph.

Not sure who hates the Accord, but they're wild. The Accord, even if you're a Nissan or Toyota fan, is a very respectable car. It's always been the more fun and "sportier" inspired car compared to the Camry or Altima. Heck, hasn't Car and Driver put the Accord on the best driving car for like 20+ years?

As someone that grew up in a country that Accords are not really a thing but Civics are, they aways catch my eye with that feeling of "the neighbours grass is aways greener" and I wonder why they didnt catch on as a tuner car as the Civic did, specially this gen, they can look amazing with certain mods

the only one people want to hate on right now is the 2023. and it's mostly styling, which is totally subjective, but they do stand out to me and look really modern. just really different from the previous. and there's people upset about no optional larger engine, it is the first year. I'd also say don't be a coward and install the ktuner

There's such a big Accord community, these are super common to see modded like the civics of their time (ie lowering springs and a sad excuse for a muffler that sounds like an army of bees in a tin can) That said, I love my Accord. I've had people tell me it looks like a mom car but it was my mom's car before it became mine so I guess it makes sense. When I was really young mom had a 5th gen like this one but then she got a 7th gen that became mine (and she's driving a 9th gen now)

I love my Honda Accords, I have three, one is a 2002 coupe 4 cyl. 5speed man. And I have two 2004 sedans with the k24A 5 speed man. transmissions. They're practically indestructible! The sedans have almost 270k miles on them and the coupe with only 160k miles and they are all going strong to this day and for many more in the future. You're friends Accord is really nice, he did some tasteful mods on it that's not too subtle but not outrageous either.

I'm currently driving a 94' Accord LX trim with 148,000KM on it. Sadly it's autotragic, but with the traffic now adays, that's not the worst thing ever for me. It's nearly 30 years old at this point so I've found some problems, leaking power steering, a bit of rust here and there. But other than that and regular maintenance items, it's been a great car. Everyone is shocked by the interior. Expecting it to just be a shitbox, when it's really more like a couch. Comphy, wide, and low. What a fun vibe. Honestly, love the thing.

My pops leased a 1993 and a 1996 Accord EX back in the days and my first car was a 96 Accord that I bought in 2004. They were great vehicles and even though mine was a coupe EX, I ended up loving the looks of it. I had my Accord till the end of 2021 (with over 280k miles) before it got stolen. If my insurance company covered the damage after the car was recovered, I would still be driving it but they were evil and said the little damage my car receieved when it got stolen cost more than what the car was worth at the time so they gave me $2100 bucks for the car that I cared for for 17 years. That car was def worth more than a measly $2100 bucks!

To sum up why these aren't seen as often: parts are rare. Like really rare. To the point where it has taken me over 5 years to collect specific parts for what I need for my H22A1 swap and exterior making it a JTCC touring car replica. In the span I found my car in 2017, an enthusiast in Thailand hand made replica parts for the car! I finally received them this year in 2023 and prior to 2020, literally it didn't exist. It's all lost in the times with many sought after parts being held by owners to this day or hidden away.
Glad you got to experience a nice example of one!

I have owned multiple accords over the years, adored them all. I presently drive a 2008 accord and still enjoy its simplicity and reliability despite its flaws starting to show due to its age and how much it has been passed along in my family. If possible, I would love to have an engine and transmission rebuild done with full electrical work done so it can last another 20 years easily. Oh, also replacing the seat bolstering would be nice too.
I have owned a 1984, 1986, 1989, 1994, the 2008 I now drive, 1987 accord and have driven the living snot out of all of them. Great cars.

I never knew the Accord was hated... I've been into Hondas since I was 13yr old, at 16yr old when I got my license my first car was a 94 Accord EX sedan, at 19yr old i got a 96 Accord EX sedan, at 23yr old i got a 99 Accord EXL coupe, I thought I wanted to try something different so at 27yr old I got a EK 98 Civic DX hatchback and quickly realized that the EK would make a awesome race car but compared to all the Accord's I've had it wasn't a very good daily then out of the blue I bought a 99 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX and many issues and headache's later I got a Mitsubishi EVO 8, it was cool and I never really had any major problems but Honda felt like home and the EVO was like the place I moved to for college and I graduated so it was time to come back home so I picked up a 05 (CL9) Acura TSX/Accord Euro 6spd and that's been my daily ever since

These old Accords are CRIMINALLY Underrated in the car community. I drive a Gen.4 accord myself (Sadly one generation before Vtec was introduced) and I absolutely would recommend to anyone who likes how the EG Civic drives for example. The engine isn't the Best, as the piston rods might go through the block if you throw some boost on there, but it's a Honda, so you can swap a Much better motor in there with little issue (Would recommend an H22 for the Cb7)
