  • The designers behind Volvo's XC70 were the first to realise that a large all-wheel drive estate car with a modicum of off-road ability and SUV styling cues could tempt buyers who couldn't quite stomach the thought of a fully-fledged 4x4. In this much-improved post-2013 second generation guise, it offers an efficient 'Drive-E' D4 diesel engine for owners happy to stick with 2WD. And across the range, offers either a stepping stone or an alternative to SUV ownership for the used car buyer.

Did you know that V70 was one of the most common taxi cars in Scandinavia? These cars can handle unbelievable mileages, like 700.000 kilometers or so with very little maintenance (compared to BMW and Audi). Very robust, solid cars.

The designers of the Volvo XC70 were not the first, far from it. In the 1980s we had the AMC Eagle from American Motors. These were very popular cars in Canada and the snowy parts of the US. It existed as a four-door sedan, a sporty coupé, and, a wagon. All had higher ground clearance and AWD, but the wagon was the most popular because it was also handsome and very useful. It was everything the XC70 set out to be, but came out a couple of decades earlier and only ceased production when Renault bought out AMC in order to get its hands on the Jeep brand.

I have to disagree. I have an XC70 D5 and my God it’s dynamic to drive. It goes like stink ! and laughs in the face of our deteriorating potholed excuse for roads.
