Ukraine is scheduled to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin, Italy. Ukrainian broadcaster Public Broadcasting Company of Ukraine (UA:PBC) will choose the Ukrainian representative for the contest via a new version of the national selection Vidbir, to be held on 12 February 2022. The Ukrainian national final will take place in Kyiv on 12 February 2022, and will be hosted by Maria Efrosinina with Timur Miroshnychenko as backstage host.

Every famous name mentioned in the rapping part brings its own deep message. "One for all and all for one" by Dumas is a very timely call for national unity in face of the threat of ruSSia's full-scale war, as well as the need for Picasso's peace dove. The reference to Dante, who wrote "Divine comedy" about the afterlife soul's journey but nowadays could be writing "Divine tragedy", refers to the current imminent danger of sending humankind to the afterlife. Shakespeare is the master of drama bringing up existential questions including the most famous one "To be or not to be". And Alina's call is "To Be!" and to write our OWN history, remembering ancestors, history, and culture, and to leave our own legacy after ourselves, beautiful like fairytales by Grimm brothers. Very clever lines which should speak to all of Europe. Maybe, too intelligent for less educated people. And the sounds at the beginning and the end are bird calls, uniting with Nature. And I love the beautiful message in the visuals of her eyes: it zooms in and in the depth of each eye another eye keeps appearing like eyes of generations of ancestors. We are onions with layers created by ancestors, direct of spiritual, coming from different cultures.
I would also like to add that the very name of the song echoes the classics of Ukrainian literature - the novel "shadows of the forgotten ancestors". And as for the "bird singing" at the beginning and end of the song - this is a reference to the Hutsul melodies, which are used to call on the spirits of ancestors to help in a difficult moment.
It seems to me that the strength of this song is in its relevance for the Ukrainian people at this moment.

Alina performed the most heartfelt and meaningful song I’ve heard this year. Such passion in her voice and impactful lyrics - you can’t help but feel her connection to the ancestors of Ukraine and the powerful message delivered on stage. 💛💙

I think... Alina might be my #1 in Eurovision so far. For now. I got real chills watching this performance, and I don't get those often. Just listening to the studio track, I thought it was decent, but seeing it live and seeing the emotion in her performance just elevated the song so much for me. I agree that I wasn't a huge fan of the spoken word section at first, but watching her performance of it, I can appreciate it a bit more because of what they mean to her. And of course the staging was impeccable. And to think I had no strong feelings on any of these songs going into Vidbir 🤣

It was a very good national final. I agree with your comments. Roxolana 's performance lacked colours. But I love her song. Alina and Kalush Orchestra were the best when it comes to preformance. They both deserved to win. Ukraine will again go to the final without any problems.

Alina's song is a Masterpiece! Not often I feel emotional because of ESC songs, but now I did. Not only because of the country's current circumstances, but has also an universal message. Be proud of yourself and your heritage. My 12 points go with peace and Love to Ukrain this year.

I was actually rooting for Stefania (Kalush Orchestra), but Alina deserves it.

Ukraine voted for Kalush overwhelmingly. But votes were shuffled and not disclosed to the public. She claims to have won with just 1 point over Kalush without anyone knowing how many votes she got from the public (which could have easily placed her 3rd or 4th). This whole thing with her winning is staged. Ukrainians are mad!

Group Cloudless was brilliant, i wish they went to represent Ukraine on Eurovision! However Alina's song "Тіні забутих предків" (Shadows of forgotten ancestors) in Ukrainian and English languages is pretty. The title of the song duplicates the title of the novel of the same name by the classic of Ukrainian literature Mykhailo Kots'ubynskyi. Wish her a victory!

Literally 4 songs from Ukraine could easily get to the Grand Final in May. My winner was Kalush Orchestra but Alina is also amazing.

Today has obviously been a busy one 😂
Soo after the live performances.. Kalush was my clear number one.. they just brought the energy to the stage! Roxolana right after them unfortunately just fell flat.. her voice seemed also very thin? so she ended on my fifth place.. Alina became my second, the song is really beautiful, but I still don’t like the talking/„rap“ part.. but okay.. wellboy on my third and Michael on fourth..
anyway Alina is a great pick even if I liked Kalush more! Well done Ukraine!

It is unfortunate that Vidbir ended with quite a drama. A lot of Ukranians and Kalush fans are all over the internet trying to DQ Alina because of some controversy that happened in the past and the voting result.

I would like to say a couple words about the possible reason why she's so emotional in the rapping part, regarding the words she's saying. And it connects with what's happening now between Russia and Ukraine.
The Russians believe that they are one people with the Ukrainians. And the fact that Ukraine has chosen democracy and cooperation with the Western world is considered a betrayal. Ukrainians shouldn't be friends with "Anglo-Saxons" (they choose a more offensive term).
In the USSR, it was customary to glorify only the so-called Russian culture and admire only Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Pushkin, and others.
So, that's kind of voice of protest. It's not her fault, if she likes Shakespeare, Dickens or Dumas more than Lermontov.
Again, it's just my version. But it seems so.

Russia fires rockets all over the country non-stop, a lot of children have already been injured. We will fight for our freedom and for the democratic values of the whole world to the end.
I hadn't heard the songs prior to watching the national final, but I did check out your top 8 video, to get a flavour of the songs and hear your opinions. I think we agreed with each other quite a bit.
Kalush Orchestra was probably my favourite of the night, it was just so outlandish, fun, and catchy, it really got me moving. I also really enjoyed Girlzzz and Wellboy was fun too, though I was perhaps not so crazy about it.
Alina Pash does get your attention straight away at the start of the song. I don't actually mind the first verse, but the song really grabs me from the second part of the chorus when the backing vocals really come in. I have to be honest, I kind of like the spoken word part. It's different but it just kind of works for me in the texture of the song.

As much as I love “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors”, and I still do. But I really hope they get rid of the image of her lip-syncing behind herself. Feels distracting and cheapens the overall performance for me. I’m hoping for it to take a different direction at eurovision. Still my current second place though. 😂

Whattt???? Someone is spreading bullshit. She is representing Ukraine! Alina is Ukrainian. And all her art and music is about Ukraine. It always was this way. Look at her other songs. You won't see Russia there. We are totally different cultures and nations and far from each other, considering constant Russian agression towards us.
Yes, there is some pretty solid proof that Alina had entered Crimea illegally (through Russian borders) which, according to the new rules established after the Maruv incident, should have made her unable to qualify for the tryouts in general. She has also posted pictures of herself against the Kremlin somewhere around 2018 or 2019 which... yikes. And she only cancelled her performances in russia (supposed to have happened the following year) after receiving massive backlash for it.
Cultural collaboration with the artists of aggressor state is also very frowned upon, especially in the light of recent events.
And there was some really weird stuff going out during the voting count. One of the juries gave Kalush low points because "we don't want Ukraine to always be represented as people from the mountains and forests" and then they give Alina top score for the exact same thing, which looks hypocritical and biased and like a move to secure her win even if she doesn't get the popular vote. Not to mention that the lyrics of her songs are very stereotypical and unimaginative, she can do much better, not that it would excuse any of the other stuff.

There's something not clear about the attribution of points. The same ukrainian say so.
There’s a huge scandal because of Alina Pash ‘winning’. Ukraine overwhelmingly voted for Kalush, but judges shuffled the votes and didn’t disclose them to the public. Kalush is the real winner. But Alina has powerful friends in Ukraine and good promotion in Europe, that’s how she ‘won’. Such a disgrace. Everybody in Ukraine I know voted for Kalush and Wellboy and everybody is mad as hell. There is also a political scandal involved as Alina Pash visited Russia after the war broke out in 2014 and she is culturally collaborating with Russia. Ukrainian patriots despise her very much.
What hypocrisy! On the one hand to talk about Ukraine being at war, endlessly reflecting Russian aggression for eight years, and on the other hand having so much fun talking about preparations for a song contest.
