  • 🇺🇦 We react to Ukraine's Eurovision 2022 song - Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors by Alina Pash (Тіні Забутих Предків). Alina won Vidbir 2022 in Kyiv, topping the jury vote but coming second with the public televote. The song, which discusses how Ukraine should learn from its past struggles but write its own history moving forward, comes at a time of great political conflict with Russia. We discuss the song, the staging and comparisons to Jamala's 1944.

In the Carpathians (the mountainous area in the far western part of Ukraine where Alina was born), a unique cry is traditionally used to call each other in the mountains. In this case, each person chooses a sound that identifies him. That scream at the beginning Alina came up with for herself.

While I agree that current events make this stronger in context, I feel like not enough credit is being given here to the song and the vocal performance. The song is so beautiful, is folkloric in a grandiose and almost spiritual way, they managed to make it sound completely orgasmic live when the chorus hits, its outstanding.
Alisha is vocally perfect till the end, the control of her voice is flawless, feels efortless to her. On top of that the way she transmits the feellings with her face and movements is just wonderful.
Even if the current political conflict wasnt there this would still be an extremelly strong candidate and a top5 contender or even more. This is my faveourite act by far for now, a real contender to win. It has it all.

The bird noises are very her. Like with ‘Witch’ (w. Apache) I wasn’t sure of the sounds but she just makes it work. It’s just her style (though the calm aspect is not very typical of her). Also she really has the stage presence to make this work.

The bird calls unite with nature. It's the whole: the nation, the legacy of ancestors, the land with its nature, and the current generation writing their own history. The song is basically a call for a UNIVERSAL harmony with land, culture, legacy of ancestors, and own future beautiful legacy to leave behind after ourselves.

For me, this is the song to beat currently. I know a lot of people are loving Brividi (as am I), but the question of whether the host country can win back-to-back competitions is a strong factor that remains for me. Either way, I still think this has bigger impact moments and probably just edges it in terms of winning material. I know it might not be everyones cup of tea, and even I am not personally a massive fan of the rap section of the song. The chorus, however, is incredible, and whilst half of it is in Ukrainian, it has such an emotional and powerful melody that personally gives me goosebumps. Coupled with the ongoing situation surrounding Ukraine and Russia at the current moment which I think could also have a big impact on voting, this has to be a strong contender, and for me, is currently the winner of Eurovision 2022.

This could be a global watershed moment at Eurovision, where the world will take note and praise Ukraine for their bravery and musicality. This has a 90's beatnik spoken word vibe but, reflects the current situation occurring right now, everything about this gives me tingles, and deserves to win full heartedly and unreservedly. Alina is a artist but, in the same way that Lady Gaga is a artist. Gaga never did the cookie cutter pop star routine, she never conformed to fit the mould to get her music out there she did her own thing and got what she deserved a critical universal global response and is now one of the most influential musicians and artists of all time. Alina Pash falls in the same category, she uses a personal story which is shared my millions of Ukrainians about the current events unfolding. I give her my most sincere kudos for her artistry and her bravery. Brava Alina Pash.
P.S: Given the situation in Ukraine, it is almost a certainty that Ukraine cannot host the next contest if they win so, would the 2nd place be asked to take the hosting reigns, would a bidding process take place amongst all competing nations who are interested in hosting or would a automatic neutral ground host be established. I would like to know your thoughts on this, Wiwibloggs and all those who comment.

It seems you have accustomed to east European traditional music and I am happy about that, because no country should be ashamed to show its folklore or traditional heritage. I understand that some people will feel tired of traditional meaningful song for another row, but it’s literally one of two best songs we had on our NF. I wish it was happy and uplifting too, like Roxolana’s Girlz, but she was bad live at stage. Traditional and modern mix music is really popular nowadays in Ukraine. Thank you 🙏

....actually....it does not. Just imagine if each country would sing about troubles in their society or politics in such a blatant way. That would we a pathetic song competition. Like "Who is screwed the most 2022" 😂. And you know what, most of the people would not even look. But when you have one country which chooses to go that way, then everyone looks. It is like when one thing happens everywhere, nobody notices, while when it happens once, it draws attention. The thing with Ukraine is that they have already played on this card and i think that this time it is a bit too much. Also, now when seeing this, I wonder why did Bulgaria give up this year by sending a song so quickly and the one which so below their standard. Hmmm....did they know something?

@@alexalexiye9791 but its not about 2022. Ukraine has never had a break, and the song is about reflecting on the past. When you reflect on the past of Ukraine, you see an Endless amount of wars with no actual Freedom.
If you reflect at the history of the UK, you see Kings beheading their wives and colonizing and abusing poorer countries. Its not the same, and the context matters. This is also exactly why Russia gets booed at eurovision every time they send a song about keeping peace. Its like a wolf saying we shouldnt eat sheep

Finland? Lichtenstein even? Oh wait wait....Israel. This attitude adds nothing to music and artistry, and is purely based on politics. And I feel that as someone who follows ESC, I have right to criticize this, because if this is going to turn into who-cries-the-most-beautifully-contest, this is not ESC I like and I am not going to follow ESC more.

I’m more in love with Estonia/Stefan’s “Hope” right now, but I feel “Shadows” has the stronger shot at winning Eurovision. Ironically, both have undertones of national pride and defiance against dangers from outside forces (Read “Hope’s” lyrics and tell me Stefan *ain’t” thumbing his nose at Russia).

She is a bird. A bird of peace. Everything about her beautiful performance screams for attention to the political situation in Ukraine. She is calling and beging for peace with every motion she is making, her eyes are seeing through my soul. I think maybe she is even saying that Russia and Ukraine have a past, a history and ancestors and it can be remembered, but now it's time to write each their own history.
This is a 2022 update to 1944. She is very striking, I love everything about it, for being, True, authentic, empowering; love the musicality, and I love that it is folk and modern just like the message in the song. And most of all its not another empty song, it has a purpose, and that's why the emotions are so strong and will reach to so many audiences hearts!

This wasn't my personal choice in Vidbir (roxolana girlzz/stefania) but it's hard to stay mad when Ukraine always sends something so unique and refreshing. I think the spoken word/rap part will be so enticing and a real superstar moment.

Ukraine is in a state of war with Russia and if we LIVE in this state of fear with all our documents packed just in case. So yes, we choose a song that we relate to the most at the moment. I was planning to vote for another song, but this song just got me goosebumps and shivers all over my body so I could not resist voting for her instead
