Absolutely gutted at the sad loss of Peter Alliss the true voice of golf, he took over this mantle from the much loved Henry Longhurst, the original voice of golf on the bbc, and made us all love him, we’ve not seen much of him since the bbc lost the tv rights to THE OPEN, and most of the televised golf to sky sports, but anyone that truly loves the game of golf as Peter did, he will always have a place in our hearts. Fairways and greens Peter mate God Bless.

The BBC deserved to lose the coverage. Like all their other sports coverage, they didn’t move with the times and lost pace with more professional organisations. It also can’t be forgotten that it was the BBC’s decision to leave their contract to cover The Open a year early, which perhaps tells us all we need to know about their commitment to the sport.

A huge part of my childhood - back in the 1990's - was spent out on the golf course from dusk till dawn - as a golf mad junior. Watching all sorts of golf on BBC Sport - most of which involved Peter Alliss. Not only was he the voice of golf...he was also the voice of my childhood. I've tried Sky Sports - I really dislike the American commentary, the endless sponsors adverts every 12-14 minutes, the music and the commentary. Hate it. The thing I loved about BBC sport was the slow, uninterrupted style - enabling the atmosphere of the tournament and golf course to come through - to really get a feel and sense of the struggles of each player out on the course. Felt like you were going on a journey - and for me that is what golf is. BBC Sport captured that perfectly back in the 1990's. Watching golf on TV will never be the same again. Such a shame.

There has been a total decline of grassroots golf, golf clubs are going into decline because of the bbc losing THE OPEN because golf clubs can’t afford to have sky sports in the club house so the members go home without going in the clubhouse to watch golf with their golf mates, most households have sky tv but not all of them have sky sports golf, so the younger golfers are not being exposed to the greatest game in the world and the greatest golf commentator in the world Peter Alliss. This is the demise of golf as we know it.

Taken the Masters was another bad move by Augusta, leaving bbc with last two days and also 10 grand prixs. Let's also not forget that the BBC is losing the British Open at the same time that ABC/ESPN, where Alliss has been a commentator since the mid-1970s (Alliss and Henry Longhurst commentated on the 15th and 16th holes in ABC's 1976 U.S. Open telecast), is also losing the American TV rights to the British Open.
While there seems to have been an uproar in Great Britain about the BBC losing the rights to the British Open to Sky Sports for 2017, ABC/ESPN is losing the rights to the British Open, which includes the Senior and Women's Opens, to NBC and the Golf Channel at the exact same time, though without the same fanfare, so this is not only a major sea change for those in Europe, but also for those in the USA that watch the British Open. ABC has been the American carrier for the British Open since 1961, with ESPN carrying the torch in more recent years.

Now 2020. How wrong the R&A were . Interest in golf diminishing world wide. Clubs closing down hard to get young members. They said the Sky money would be used to advance the game . it is not Sky money it is golfers money who pays the exorbitant subscriptions to Sky? Answer the well off golfers who can afford it which precludes the less well off and brings golf back to the elitist image and not forward as it should be. Have watched a little golf on sky because it is the only source but they do not hold a candle to the best sports coverage of any TV company the BBC. By the way i am Irish and would willing pay a license fee to the BBC if it were possible. The BBC should promote itself to the world not shrivel up the way it is going today.

I’ve been all match days for the last 24 years and on the course Sky do a better job as they don’t get in the way and affect play as I have seen with the BBC. They also don’t push paying spectators out of the way as the BBC have also done. I did, and do miss Peters commentary though.

I saw Watson and Faldo who were golfing greats wave goodbye on the Swilken bridge at St Andrews last year and that will do me too. I won't be upgrading to Sky. After playing a round of golf at daybreak; playing just like Peter - brilliantly; but putting blindfolded; I thought that I'd take a look at my hero and see what he was up to. And of course then discovered this bitterly disappointing news. However it comes as no surprise as the BBC have been going downhill for years. One no longer even has to speak correctly in order to broadcast! In fact it appears to nowadays go out of its way to engage language bumbleducks. I often have to turn off athletics so appalling is one athletics (field division) commentator! Possibly the money the BBC saves by not securing the Open coverage rights will be used in order to extend 'East Enders?' The BBC are hell bent on endlessly promoting multi-racism and sexual perversity and alas little of that is acted out on the golf course.

I agree, Sky Sports is a joke, their golf coverage is pathetic. They tend to concentrate on following certain groups of golfers in a tournament, instead of showing as many players as possible. They don’t update the leaderboard often enough and should also provide alphabetical scores of the players more frequently. Viewers around the world need to follow how their favourites are doing regarding making the cut or perhaps how the round is progressing. Sky have started interviewing players during a round which I believe shouldn’t be allowed, it’s not done by any other broadcaster.
The current commentators do not have the charisma and personality of the BBC team.
Peter will be sorely missed, RIP
