- This week, we revisit a tribute to Peter Alliss, one year on from his passing. With words from Jim Nantz, Andrew Cotter, Hazel Irvine and Ewen Murray, we celebrate the life of Alliss in this special bonus episode.
Sadly passing away in December 2020 at the age of 89, Alliss transcended generations as a player, commentator, and with his incredible character. One of The Open's most recognisable figures, and one of golf's greatest characters, Alliss' humour, wit and unique style was loved and cherished by millions the world over.
In memory of the one and only Peter Alliss.

I had the pleasure of meeting the great man when honorary membership was conferred on him by my golf club. He very graciously accepted then spoke for over an hour answering impromptu questions from the members. He was candid, insightful as well as hilarious, and we hung onto his every word. I felt privileged at the time, but cherish the memory all the more now he’s no longer with us.
What a brilliant day indeed !
He'll be missed always from BBC golf viewers who are old enough to remember him.
Absolute legend. The voice of golf.
A natural if there ever was one. IMO the best commentator ever. Jim Nance's memories of Peters' solo one hour segments at the Open were so right on - more entertaining than the golf itself.
Peter commented about Ricky Fowler's hat. He asked of the cuff what sort of hat it was, referring to the style.
I emailed in with the comment that it was a "Rapper's Cap" or "A Patou Poet's Fascinator".
I never got an answer or an acknowledgement. I just thought it had got lost down a black hole. That is until a couple of years later when he was yet again following Ricky Fowler at a tournament.
He used my material. I clearly heard the comment and I was so thrilled.
I still didn't get any accreditation but I wasn't aggrieved. I was just honoured that he thought my comment was worth using.
I think Peter Aliss was a wonderful human being.
Effortlessly funny and fantastic commentater
Also don't forget a very gifted golfer
Just a true genius… I grew up listening to him on the BBC. The good old days when golf on terrestrial tv was so regular. The game has changed so much and even more so without Mr Alliss!
He had the amazing ability to know when to say nothing at all - something modern commentators do not understand.
The voice of golf simple as....just like bill Mclaren was the voice of rugby.....if your remembered for being a decent human, therin lies your success ...
