The Most Underrated Film Camera? | Nikon L35AF Review

- The Nikon L35AF is a pretty amazing point & shoot film camera, especially for its age. While my copy has a bit of a hazy lens, I actually like the look and it has some advanced features that even my Contax T2 and Fujifilm Klasse W don't have. I've taken some of my favorite family memories with this camera and totally recommend it.

That camera got me back into film years ago. Wonderful little machine!
Thanks for the quick rundown! I just found one of these for $7 and am excited to try it out
That "Pikaichi" 2.8 lens is something special man. I have one, thinking about selling it tho for mad cash, as I never use it anymore shooting medium format. I know I'm gonna regret it, but it's better in the hands of someone of the younger generation. A tip for the flash: If it pops up and you don't want to use the flash, pop it back down and leave your finger on the top of it and take the picture. It won't wreck the flash or anything. I've been doing that with mine for 5+ years and it's still going strong.
Found this camera at a Tianguis for like $6 dollars, my first P&S film camera, I'm glad I found it, I love it, ty so much for the information 🙌🤠
Such a good video but so few clicks, yet. I hope more people value it in the future.
I just started to figure out which camera I want to buy to start analog photography and this really helps. Thanks a lot
Oh wow, this brings back a lot of memory. That's the camera my father used when I was young as he ditched the Pentax SLR system.
Ha, I use the camera in the exact same way: Tri-X, pushed, leaving the exposure. I love this camera, my fav point and shoot. Great vid!
Man I love this channel. Thank you. Beautiful family
Benj… I’m thrilled to have just received my first l35af in the mail this weekend!
Thanks for the great review!
Nice video and I dig the photos and music.
underrated? Bro these are one of the most popular point and shoots and the price is waaaaaaayyyy overinflated
@Artemio Medina it’s not worth $150. the t2 is overinflated as well, but at least it has zeiss glass and is titanium. the l35 is plastic and the af isn’t great. it’s overpriced.
@Artemio Medinaif you wanna justify spending $150+ on a hunk of plastic be my guest, i’m just saying the price is overly inflated. if you like it, great. i just wouldn’t spend more than $40 on one
@@rosetta-stxned wish the T2 was cheaper tbh. Hate that people want you to drop 1K on one just because of the hype.
I bought this camera in Nicaragua for $5.
@@rosetta-stxned I have both cameras, the T2 and the L35AF.
The Nikon it's a better camera and the pictures are exactly the same, you can not tall at all which is took with which.
The T2 and the T3 are so overrated.
Love this camera! Always get great results. Sure it’s a quintessential 80s brick, but that makes me like it even more.
Excited for this one! This is my next film camera review.
Just watched. Agreed on the autofocus feature of the camera. It was subtle and strange at first, but now I feel confident with my shots. Also a fan of those side straps too! I bought this camera thinking I'd eventually resell it, but now it feels like something I'll keep around for decades to come.
@@codyallen3729 We'll definitely see! My copy is rock solid luckily. Stored well by a professional photographer. Ran three rolls through it so far with no issue.
Another lovely bit about this one, the metering is done by the lens, so if you put a filter on the camera will compensate for it. And if you want to override the flash, when it pops up, just hold it down and the camera will open up as wide as it can. It's a slick little brick overall.
If you don't have any filters and want to trick the metering anyways, aim it at something darker or lighter than your actual subject, hold the shutter half way to set the metering, and then aim and shoot at your target.
just picked up the AF3, same lens I believe but some different/newer features. so excited to see how this roll turns out
I grew up with this camera :)
Yes, you can't turn off the flash. But you can hold it while pressing the shutter to take a photo without flash when the camera wants to pop it up.
wow ur shots came out great!
That was my mom's camera back in the day. Probably one of the first cameras I remember using. It's still around the house, I'm gonna check if it still works.
Great video! Do all point and shoot's viewfinders show the actual framing that the lens will capture, or just show literally what's behind the viewfinder?
I have one of these, got to be one of the best film cameras I have. Such a good clean lens on it.
Awesome video! What developer are you using with your tri-x?
I have a Nikon L35AF that goes to ASA 1000. Everything works, including the ON/OFF switch and battery door. I enjoy loading a roll of film in it for a walk around town.
Here are the fixed-lens 35mm film cameras I use:
Nikon L35 with fixed 35mm f/2.8 lens.
Canon QL17 with fixed 40mm f/1.7 lens.
Canon Sure Shot with fixed 39mm f/2.8 lens.
Minolta Hi-Matic 9 with fixed 45mm f/1.7 lens.
I just picked this camera up at a yard sale because I like older camera for their look. So I wasn't too disappointed that it doesn't seem to work but after finding that many people think it's really a super camera, I thought I'd give it a try. Unfortunately I can't get it to work. The shutter release button doesn't work. I have put in good AA batteries in the right position, I turned the Off/On button to On, but it does nothing. Do I need to have it loaded with film first? Any suggestions?
What is the 2-1 slide/button combo on the bottom? I’d imagine it has something to do with rewinding but not sure (literally just picked one up in mint condition today for $20!
Do you think it is a good camera for focus and recompose portraits?
I have one of these and it seems to function 100% however the shutter doesn't seem to operate. Any tips on how to fix?
hey man - are the normal l35af weather sealed? if not - is the one touch or all weather versions as good?
Want to buy an inexpensive point and shoot and I was thinking of Olympus XA that seems to be taken very nice pics (even if technically it's a range finder). But your pics are beautiful
Found this camera at a thrift store for $12 and everything works, it also has a bulky Gemini zoom telephoto lens. Not sure what I’d does because looking through the viewfinder nothing changes. Super stoked already taking pictures. Love it
My dad gave me one back in 1985 when I went to school. He cleaned airplanes and found it on one. I really wish I still had it. If I kept my fingers out of the lens, it never took a bad shot.
Ya, so underrated, they go for $300 dollars on ebay.
I have one in good conditions only want like 150 or 100
@@jonathanramos7117 still selling??
@@Lina-np3ym No sorry selling a T7 tho
Any recommended places to have these sent to be refurbished?
I got mine for a steal but sadly I lost it at a music festival, really miss this camera
How do these do in landscape photography?
It reminds me of my Canon AF35M, it has also the same kind of strap
ProTip: If you're shooting B&W, try contrast filters like Yellow, Orange, or Red! The light meter sensor is not TTL, but is near the lens, so it automatically compensates for any filter.
Yellow with HP5 or Tri-X for that pop.
What do the coloured filters do for the b&w film? Does it add certain warmth tones to it? I’ve been wanting to try colour filters for mine
@@jenjnfr no, they dont "warm" the image, since we're speaking of B&W film. They selectively change the contrast. A red filter creates a very dark sky (when it's blue). Orange a bit less, yellow even less. A green filter blocks green light, making trees lighter. Lots of folks habitually use a yellow filter with B&W film all the time. BTW, this only works with B&W film or a Monochrom digital sensor.
@@jenjnfr my point in bringing it up was that this camera has a non-ttl light sensor, adjacent to the lens, eliminating the need to calculate a filter-factor for exposure.
@@jklphoto thanks for that, as I’m new to film I don’t know very much so that’s very helpful I appreciate it! Will definitely keep all that in mind for when I try coloured lens filters on b&w 👍🏻
The camera is so underrated that not one kardashian has taken it to a latenight show. 🤣
Hahahaha
I wish they did, so they'd make them jump up to Mju-ii prices...lol
do you develop your own film?
2:40 - What do you mean by "pushing it a stop" to add the contrast? Thank you for your videos :)
With film, you can over or under expose the film and tell the phot lab to compensate for it during development. This can change the look of some film stocks.
Las year (2022) I rescued this camera from my parents house while they were moving out. One year later I was able to find a camera work shop who accepted it for repair. Hope I will be able to get it back fully working.
Proud owner of this camera since a few weeks ask me anything but i love it
How are u enjoying it so far? And how much do u think its worth? As in should i get it for $110?
@@COZY__BOY defiantly if you can get your hands on the 1000 iso versie for 110 it's a must buy. The camera is fantastic I can send you some example imagines via discord if you want.
I had one for a year or so. I liked the results but it’s just too clunky for me. The current prices are hysterical 🤓
Also takes filters! 46mm, I believe.
These things are now fuck off expensive, even when they're broken.
I picked a bad time to get into this hobby...
tell me about it 💀
How is it underated? I've seen toon of content on it and prices are mad too...
I doubt the average photography enthusiast has ever heard of this camera. I sure hadn’t when I bought this thing a few years back for about $6.
Where’s the best website to buy point and shoot cameras with nice price range abd can deliver internationally 🥺??
I have but these cameras are not the most reliable - i've had 3/4 of the L35AF and there's always a shutter jam or flash wouldn't pop etc.
Sure, I mean the cameras are plastic and 40 years old at this point, so it’s actually surprising that many still work.
It's the battery compartment. Clean the contacts or try fresh batteries.
Great lens otherwise hampered by the cheap plastic construction of the battery door.
Great video. If you want to override the flash, you hold it down and it’ll revert to slower shutter speeds. Yep the power switch and self timer switch are the weak points of the camera, so try not to use them too often. My L35AF has good contrast... maybe yours might be under exposing?
@Larry McCormick yep, the L35AF (version 1) was the best one made. I own a dozen version 1’s. Yep, it’s common for folks to have problems with the plastic battery doors. I’ve never had a problem with mine though, and I’ve never had to use tape. It helps to find one with a metal battery door tab at the end, which is more secure than the plastic tab version. The L35AF (ver. 1) came with two battery door types, as well as ISO 400/1000 versions.
I’ve never had a problem with the shutter button with any of mine either. The issue is with the on/off locking switch, which loses tension over time. I just keep mine in the “on” position with no issues, which doesn’t drain batteries. The plastic self timer switch tends to crumble internally, so they are more like time bomb switches that will break with use. I try to avoid to use the self timer.
whats the difference with the Nikon one touch L35 AF2?? Is this one better?
The version 1 L35AF is the best. It has the best lens, and was the best constructed camera. I’d skip the other newer versions.
@@JP1050x Thank you!
When I saw this and Faizal Wescott's video, I got curious as to what the fuzz is all about on this camera. Lo and behold here I am, a new owner of this little gem.
Nikon L35 AF vs nikon L35 AD which one is better? According to you
Hi, I think they are the exact same camera, except that the AD has the ability to add date stamps 😊
Mines broke now im scared to buy a new one but I loved it so much
Update it’s still broken but can take photos
Hi dude
I just bought this camera from savers yesterday for 5$ talk about scoring
Next a Holga camera. A snob for Holga. Best photo ever taken was taken with a Holga. And this guys wifes name was also Holga.
Me who just went to Walgreens and spent 12 bucks on batteries for my xa
Remember when you could get a Contax T2 for $800 ?
It came out in 1983. 🎉
All these Premiers start to get on my nervs. just post the video when it's done.
I’ll just start sending you the unlisted links. I actually uploaded this video on December 17th... 😬
Has anyone used one of these little bricks?
Bought one mint for 50 dollars a few months ago and the lens on mine is very sharp and contrasty. Also, the metering and autofocus is mostly flawless. I tried other cameras such as the Olympus XA, Yashica T4 and Fuji Tiara but the results from this camera for the price couldnt help me justify the price of any other option. This camera never leaves my bag whenever I go out.
PIcked one up for more than I should have paid but not as much as they're going for now and its a great camera! I have the L35AF2 version and its my most compact film camera, makes bringing a film camera so easy as an everyday carry. I like the 80's styling and brickness of it, it cranks out good quality images, so happy I got one.
I never ran until any luck until I found one in a thrift store for $5. Shame that online sellers are overinflating the prices.
If you don’t want to use the flash and it pops up, you can just hold it down when your shoot and the flash won’t flash.
Well here goes the prices for one of these...
Haha I think you overestimate my influence 😂
Not underrated camera my man its a sleeper until youtube start making videos and the price goes through the roof
So frustrating. 40 year old plastic cameras that sold for a few bucks in a thrift store maybe a couple of years back, suddenly command insane prices. My nikon fe and 50mm lens was less than 200 bucks and it's mint.
@@rutabaga69 i own one bro mint one.
