- Welcome back to The Making Of A Pilot. This private pilot series is rolling on after Jonathan flew solo in the last video. Watch that here:
• Jonathan's FIRST SOLO ...
In this episode it's time for Jonathan to learn how to do short and soft field takeoffs and landings. They aren't easy at first, especially after just mastering normal takeoffs and landings but they are crucial for pilots to master too!
Enjoy the flight and don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss any episodes of The Making Of A Pilot!

THAT'S what we're taking away...Stellar job to the both of you. *-Pre-Solo pilot on financial break just living vicariously here 😁😁✈*
Did my first short field takeoff today, between the lower amount of fuel we had on board and the strong headwind, we practically took off like a helicopter. I could still see the thousand foot markers at around 200 ft.
Love seeing the 360 camera and the enthusiasm. As usual, a great lesson with a great instructor.
Love how fast Jonathan picks up on things. Should probably change the name of the series, he's already a Pilot, just yet to be certified! Awesome job, Jonathan. Great video, Lewis!!
Can't wait to see the x-country. Have a Blessed day.
Thanks for the support man!
Yes! I’ve been wanting to practice my short field maneuvers for awhile. Thx Lew!
You’re welcome 🙌🏻
Great video Lew! A little bump of power (100-200RPM) during the flare helps me arrest my sink rate and make those soft field landings super soft. Keep it up Jonathan! You’re doing great!
exactly what i was looking for!
Great timing 🙌🏻
Thanks for this. I've missed flying for the last few years and your video delivery (wing cams and all), physics explanations, and thinking face brought me straight back to flight school. Like riding a bike, you never forget learning all this. Awesome job making these, for real.
I have to laud you for the contribution you make in improving your students as pilots, well done mate.
I look forward to the days when l will come to the USA and fly as well...
Thank you so much mate!
I think it's great that you make these little fun challenges for the students. I try to invent challenges for myself, every time I fly. Otherwise flying circuits is just bloody boring.
Good stuff .... good stuff. Jonathan is a natural - bigtime !!! - GREAT work Jonathan .... keep it up brother !!
8:40 love watching your instruction here. it's like being a landing doctor.
In the same boat with Jonathan, and also doing a lot of cross country right now too! Can’t wait to see us progress together! Base airport is KVNY 😜
Looking good so far, Jonathan. Solid progress
I always do soft-field take-offs in a C172 with a roll of nose-down trim to balance the lift of flaps 10, otherwise the pressure required to keep the nose down and in ground effect is excessive IMHO. Early in training, I would always pop out of ground effect and climb early like I saw in this video, but adding the roll of nose down trim changed that and allowed me more control.
Great video Lew, very informative...
Just started working on these this week and yes, they are tough!
Nice!
Great Episode
Good job. I've got my Sport check ride in March. Been struggling with hitting my short field landing. I'll take the pointers learned here to my next flight.
Well done

Thank you! 🙌🏻
I too have trouble w/ the flare in my 74 Archer 1 (32' hershey bar wings). Making smooth small adjustments when pulling elevator back at the right ht above rwy is the difference between a good flare or a total balloon fiasco. 300 landings and I'm still learning.
Wow great video. ❤
Thank you!
Very cool! Do you ever do grass strip landings with your students?
Awesome job man, I'm currently doing my check ride prep and short field landings are still a struggle at times for me
They aren’t easy. Aiming point and airspeed control are very important.
Hey LewDix!
Hi!
nice!
hes a great student for sure. guy is like a sponge...
As a nonpilot, I'm wondering if you can put some forward slip to lose height on the short field landing?
Hey lew I saw previous video of you flying the atr for silver airway why did you leave? I didn’t see an explanation vid

Damn, go big or go home, right? DVT here, not a student except in the broader sense of "there's always more to learn."
