  • Getting checked out on a new aircraft can seem daunting. It can also seem like a bit of an inconvenience but going into it with the right mindset will always serve you well. As with all flights, I try to make checkout flights a fun process all the while making sure that the pilot is safe and ready for subsequent flights on their own.
    Enjoy the flight!

    Please tell me you reported that controller. His behavior was unacceptable and he poses a threat. That kind of attitude is extremely dangerous, particularly at a field where students are training. These guys need to be called out.

    • @johnheifner5813
      @johnheifner5813 Před 2 měsíci +3

      I'd 100% file a complaint on this controller. "Maintain left traffic pattern, RWY 15 cleared for takeoff, make a right turn out". Pilot then asks for clarification because that clearance makes no fucking sense and the controller ironically talks about clogging up the radio while clogging up the radio.
      Yea - reported dude.

    First, wow. I have no issue with asking to meet Tower's supervisor on the ground. As you point out, unsafe attitude for anyone, much less the student pilots so common in FL. Contributing to the problem, not the solution. Second, neat work on the falling leaf, and happy that you stayed above 2500. My CFI and I did accelerated stalls and cross controlled stalls, extensively, in my previous Grumman Tiger. Very, very eye opening. I'm looking forward to doing the 'falling leaf' exercise in a Decathlon on Thursday, if the weather holds. Syllabus for Flight 1:
    1. Aileron/rudder (“Dutch roll”) exercise
    2. Flight at minimum controllable airspeed
    3. Stalls: power‐off, power‐on, and accelerated
    4. “Falling Leaf” exercise
    5. Aileron rolls
    6. Loops
    Sounds like a fun first flight.

  • @antyslope

    Lewdix, I work as a CFI at a flight school there at KISM. I’m sure you’ve seen our plane there N978AP (I also see it in the video). That controller is very popular with my students and I. Always gives us a hard time, it makes it very difficult to teach students radio comms. He corrects everything, gets upset for repeating. Plenty of times I want to double check what I’m doing, but he does not make it easy. Best to always use your best judgement and ask for confirmation regardless of the controllers attitude, you cannot control their attitude.

    • @johnheifner5813
      @johnheifner5813 Před 2 měsíci +1

      You control their attitude by having a bunch of people report their behavior. We had a guy like this at our local field and after numerous complaints he suddenly became one of the nicest controllers around. Weird...

    Checkouts are imperative on airframes you've never flown. It's important to get a perspective from an experienced instructor who has flown many aircraft models and their variations on making a successful transition, especially as a newer pilot.
    After training in PA-28-151/161, I bought a half-interest in a 140. I was concerned about the lower power, different wing design, and how that would be important, especially close to the ground. The newer design wing was becoming famous for floating in ground-effect. I wasn't interested in discovering this difference by accident.

  • @StorBenn
    @StorBenn Před 2 měsíci +1

    Might have been mentioned already, but the only thing I would give your student, recommend not spending so much time looking inside! Especially during the falling leaf demonstration. I'm not sure what he was so keen on looking at, but have him look out side and it'll make keeping those wings level WAY easier! :D

    In Australia my biannual flight review date got reset with my instrument check ride. I went out and did a similar check flight with another school and did some stalls, practice forced landing, steep turns which would of been a year and a half since the last time I did them with a instructor. With ipc resetting your biannual date here technically you could go many years without practicing.

      If you need new sun glasses sure go for it. There are a lot of little expenses when you first start flying and may be better going into those. flying eyes are at a lot of events and you can try them on as well. I believe you can give the lew dix promo code if you buy in person too.

      Don’t be on the fence go buy a pair. I bought a pair and love them. I went out of town and left them, bought another pair of a very popular brand at a local store and I realized after 2 years of wearing flying eyes glasses and can’t go back to other brands. What he says about them made me buy them and yes I used the discount code lol but after wearing them and then wearing another brand I will never go without flying eyes again.

    Checkouts are extremely annoying, expensive, and they simply shut down a lot of opportunities for recreational pilots (want to go to Hawaii for 3 days and do a scenic flight? Well, you can't, need to get a checkout first). They are only a symptom of a problem though. The reason no FBO or flight school in the country will ever give you the simplest aircraft without a checkout is because training standards are widely varied that there is indeed no way for them to know if you can even fly. Your PPL or CPL means nothing to the owner. Plus... they want your money. And that club instructor could really use a couple of hundred dollars and an hour of dual given. Let's be honest about this.

      A local checkout is always warranted. Particularly in a new-to-you aircarft model. Then, remember, they dont know you, your skill level, or your familiarity with the local area (and customs/landmarks/or even the procedures on the ground). Yes, they want you to pay for the aircraft and CFI to accomplish that. Ugh.

    • @alk672
      @alk672 Před 2 měsíci

      @@MikeRetsoc unless there are complicated local procedures, I don’t see it this way at all. And if they do exist - it can be achieved on the ground. As it stands, I had to do a checkout at a flight school to fly their C-152 with 250 hours in a C-150 within the previous 3 years. Come on. It’s a cash grab. Oh yeah - and I was local. Trained out of an airfield 30 miles away.
