- My student Jonathan is flew solo which is a huge achievement. I'm so happy to share the footage with you. Along with that I give you my view from the ground as the CFI. What goes through a flight instructor's mind as their student goes solo? What does it take, what does the instructor do and more questions will be answered in this video.
Enjoy the solo!

I remember, it was 2nd solo I believe, as I exited the runway after my 3 T&Gs, controller said “Good job.. nice tight pattern work, good job on the radios and read backs “ (as close to a quote I remember from 1991 😁). That felt so awesome. I knew my CFI thought I was good enough for it, but that just added to the elation. Miss those days.
That was awesome. I really appreciate seeing what a CFI goes through when their student is up solo. He did great. It has to be satisfying knowing your student is out there killing it.
Glad you enjoyed it! I liked giving you all this insight. It’s definitely a hugely satisfying thing to see my students succeed!
An absolutely unmatched feeling for everyone! I imagine that it would be so rewarding as a instructor seeing a student go from having no clue to crushing it around the pattern!
Congrats Jonathan and Lewis! Thanks for sharing a different perspective.
Glad you liked it mate!
It's funny because I have an easier time with landing than taking off. My take-offs have never been consistent, especially in this particular plane of the three that my flight school uses. Whereas with landings I can land each of those planes no problem.
Can only imagine how gratifying this must be for you as an instructor. First thing my CFI said to me when I soloed was "You're a pilot now!". It was a heavy moment. Congrats to Jonathan! He killed it.
It's an amazing thing to experience. A mixture of so many emotions.
Awesome Job , landing weren't perfect, but they weren't terrible either nothing more practice can't fix. Very lucky to have Lew as your instructor, make sure you take advantage of that special opportunity to learn from such a great teacher, and learn absolutely as much as you can because not all of your instructors will be so great if you decide to continue and pursue aviation as a career. Congratz on the solo, study hard, chair fly often, and you will have this in the bag. May your winds be calm and keep the blue side up :D
Congrats Jonathan, and nice work as always LewDix! You never forget your first solo. Keep it up!
Few things in life compare to your first solo...well, I could think of a few more (cough). Congratulations, Jonathan! 👍
Well done to both of you, top instruction as always and a perfect solo flight from Jonathan, congratulations 🎉
I remember the joyous feeling well. Well done.
I was doing curcuit consolidation at Barton, I'd got about 2.5 hours solo. Then there were eight aircraft in the curcuit. It started to feel dangerous. I landed early. Looking forward to learning to fly somewhere quieter.
That taxi instructions had me like 🤯
Congrats to the both of you. Nothing like your solo stage of training, and nothing better for an instructor than cutting the apron strings and watching your student fly well and make good decisions!
Dude, that’s was, like, the coolest ceiling shot -- EVER 😮
Yea man!
Congrats Jonathan! He is one cool cat behind the yoke, gonna be a great pilot for sure with that level of focus and his attitude.
I was excited with you Lew! Well done to you both!
Thanks brother!
Great job Jonathan!! Awesome video of his 2nd solo, Lewis. Absolutely loved the ceiling shot. lol.
Really like how you handle your students, brother.
Still waiting for another MSFS live stream. ;)
I’ll work on the next MSFS stream 😏
What an absolutely amazing achievement, well done Jonathan and yourself 🥂🍺👌.
Brought back memories of my 1st solo Feb 1 1975..a few landings ago!
Couldn't have asked for better weather to solo, nice work both of you
Always an awesome job, Lew...you have a gift...glad you decided to come back to instructing:) Keep the blue side up...unless, of course, you decide to get into aerobatics:)
Thank you so much! 🙌🏻
love this perspective!
🙌🏻
I do have one of those radios already! Love it!
Sweet!
Well, I'm getting close to my solo, and watching these great clips helps prepare me mentally... Much appreciated...
Great to hear. Good luck!
When your solo day finally comes I assure you that you will be ready and do a great job.
Its true, I always ask to do something wrong before I do it
And PS, nice job Lewis! You’re a great instructor!!
Thank you!
I usually get a nervous excitement feeling for my students before I send them solo. Most of them have no idea that they're about to go solo. It's time for them to go when I essentially become a passenger. My most memorable is sending a kid solo on his 16th birthday! He did it with the extra pressure of his parents watching.
Two flights away from first solo. Need to get better with my flare, but other than that I’m ready. I’m a little nervous but also extremely excited
I’m not sure what your instructor is teaching you but one thing that helped me was as you cross the threshold shift your eyes to the far end of the runway and just slowly slowly hold the nose off. My instructor would repeat “hold it, hold it” and that really helped me. I hope that makes sense 😅
Damn that's stressful for the CFI. My "favorite" accident ever is the one when a student ran out of fuel on their first solo. The student did a few laps in the pattern with their CFI first, then the CFI got out, and the student ran out of fuel on the upwind immediately after takeoff. Landed safely in a field. The shortest first solo ever.
LD, 3 layers in FL this time of year... when did you record this? 🤣 Great video as always man
I made a massive mistake that morning. I was a cool early morning and I wasn’t thinking correctly and threw layers on, then had nowhere to put them on the ramp 😂
Congrats Jonathan! 🎉 Lewdix, do you have a video on your camera settings and setup?
CONGRATULATIONS - FOR MORE SOLO'S TO COME, - SKY'S IS / R THE BEGINNING .... - ENJOY THE CLOUDS .... .
Taking off is the easy part???? No freaking way. I’m terrified of heights and still struggle with take offs. Learning the rest now. I am a most challenging student. Having fun though.
I have a PJ2 as a back up comm. Works great plus you can plug your headset into it
It’s the best radio I’ve used so far 🙌🏻
I know this will sound lame but..
my pet peeve is reaching back, solo especially. Put water, ipad, and anything you might need in the passenger seat. Even on the ground because i've seen people release breaks reaching back etc
couldn't recommend getting a hand held radio enough. when i started flight training i had an alternator failure and ended up having to call the airfield manager from my phone to let them know what was going on so from that point i swore id get one incase anything happened when i go solo. on my solo cross country i called up sligo (eisg) tower and didn't hear the feedback i was expecting so i looked down and the cable had detached from the ptt. i grabbed the hand held and tried calling them on that... ofc they couldn't hear me because of a mountain in the way so i ended up switching the audio jack to the right hand side and talking on that side. still glad i have one though
Take offs are optional landings are mandatory 😊
❤
🐐
Takes one to know one
The best hint of confidence for a student pilot? Looking right and seeing an empty seat.
Definitely!
today was my first solo
Congratulations!
I got ramp BINGO!
hahaha
Lew and Dix, sixty six.... First solo, on its own, number one.... Flying eyes, twenty five,...

What the hell is wrong with that taxiway plan
They had a load of construction. It’s cleared now but it was a massive test!
This guy is a natural or reincarnated pilot
