. It's that time -- First Solo. This is when you solo an airplane after going through your initial flight training toward a private pilot license. Stefan has been flying a lot, and as his CFI I've been giving him flight lessons to prepare her for this day. Truly this is a big day in his aviation journey.
Traditionally, the flight instructor (CFI) goes up for a few laps around the traffic pattern to make sure the student pilot is in the good head space. In this case, Stefan and I did a few touch and goes in N2423U. Then, verifying what I already knew, I jumped out of the airplane (on the ground of course) and he went for a rip!
We'd like to do something fun in the comments section - RATE EACH LANDING! Let us know how you think Stefan did with each landing down in the comments.
You could tell he was flying the aircraft well and had control the whole time. Even confidence I would say. And this IS a huge confidence builder, doing this first solo. From here, really, the aviation journey accelerates with all of that energy and confidence. The end of the private pilot training goes very quickly.
Stefan ended up doing 3 takeoffs and 3 landings in our newly upgraded Cessna 172. When Stefan got back, I 'cut his tail feathers'. Lots of people ask about that tradition. In the olden days of aviation and flight training, the CFI sat behind the student in a tandem aircraft. They'd tug on the shirt of the student to convey certain messages, like turn this way, or listen up. By cutting the feathers, it signifies that the CFI no longer needs to give those instructions to the student pilot.
Of course there are still many things that the student pilot needs to learn during flight training, but the first solo is still a huge day in their aviation journey.

Good job. My first solo in 1972 was in a 150 and at the end of the runway I noticed the slap of the rudder cables for the first time. Also I was high on the landing with the instructor not in the plane. I went on to be a pilot/mechanic for the next 50 years. All good.

If that first one is a tail wind... he did great. Rest were very good for a first solo. I don't remember my fist solo as it was 30 years ago... but I do remember only having a few hours under my belt, and was 19... and I thought... "You really want me to go by myself?" I had a very long hiatus, and just recently got back into flying, so I needed a CFI again. I had lost everything. But at around the7 hr mark of getting back... he got out. This time it was different, since I had been a pilot in the past... so I said... "Thanks for the Keys dad... I'll be back by 11." The CFI laughed. FYI... I'm 50, the CFI was around 26 years old.

@@s.r.7770 Try not to compare yourself with how fast or slow others may or may not be learning. The most important thing is safety. As long as you and your instructor are safe progress will be made. If you don’t feel ready for something don’t do it. If you feel your ready and your instructor is confident give it a try. I did 7 more landings yesterday with a heavy crosswind and my instructor had to take over a a couple of times plus one go around. It was intimidating at times but a have a really good instructor that instills a lot of confidence in me and challenges me in the areas I need work. I’m having so much fun with this! It’s normal to have some uncertainty but it’s always good to press pass and challenge yourself as well. A great Pilot is a safe Pilot. See you in the skys, God Bless!

After 45 years of teaching flying there is still nothing that is quite as exciting as the first solo of one of my students.
I remember my first solo as if it were yesterday. The corn was over 7 feet tall on either side of the runway and I didn’t quite know how to use rudder petals. The touchdown was with one wheel on the grass and one on the pavement. I thought for sure I was going to take out some of the corn with the left wing. Very quickly I realized that I had to step on the right rudder pedal to get back on the runway.
I think all of his landings were a 10 out of 10. Mainly because the airplane was totally reusable without having to do any repairs. Keep up the great work Chris. See you next year.

WOW. Brings me back to my first solo. Similar situation... instructor hopped out, said to run the checklists and have fun, and off I went. I remember instantly feeling that something was just different in the cockpit when I started taxing and that's when it hit me that I was completely responsible for this airplane... after that initial "shock" it was like a switch flipped and I just did everything the way I was taught and made three laps around the pattern. I landed, shut down, and my friends and family were there to greet and support me on the ground. Really glad I decided to record it with my gopro... that's a memory I'll have forever.

Instructor said wait a minute, unplugged his headphones, opened his door and got out while I watched confused. He smiled and said you're ready, do three take offs and landings. He closed the door and walked away.

After a few lessons I decided I can't afford it just yet, but flying has been the one thing in my life where passion never waivers. I think about it all the time. Can't wait until it's a real possibility for me to be able to spend the time learning, and eventually have a first solo story to tell for myself. I had the same issue on my 1960 175 so i swapped the main gear for a set from a 1958 172 it made a world of difference. The longer gear legs got my tail out of the dirt and allowed me to hold my nose wheel up longer. Great videos, love the channel.

Great job Stefen. Never have soloed. Things came up in life and I went another way. Into marriage and the fire service. Kids came along - injured on the job but still worked for 31 years. Again congratulations and I rated your landings at 8 to 10. They all looked great since i've never have soloed. Take care be safe. BTW it's the bosses and my 47th anniversary today.

Congratulations Stefan! That first takeoff for me was quite an eye opener in a 180HP 172 with no instructor in the airplane. I was told to play in the pattern for as long as I wanted to and ended up spending most of an hour doing just that. After the flight it took a while to sink in but that is the day I really became a pilot. Checkrides are important, but your solo proves to *you* that you can safely get back to earth.
Chris, Great to meet you at OSH over near the forums. Didn't want to intrude too much on your break but glad I said "Hi". Keep up the great stuff!

I was high as a kite, cloud 9. I did in in a 172. But no cut shirt or bucket of water. I was asked by tower to cut across mid field to switch downwind legs. Tower guy called the school and said sorry he forgot I was on 1st solo. Tower said great job.

My first solo was amazing, I did 3 three landings and all of them were good. I changes flight schools this year to a different place cause sporty's discouraged me twice and I was originally to flight training there

All were very safe. The first solo one looked like you started round out a touch high and then floated down the runway for quite a while but you just kept holding it as needed which is really great. My first solo happen in April 2021. Was supposed to solo in the AM but just wasn't feeling confident as I struggled some with the wind pushing me and doing some practice with emergency procedures. Waited until that evening and went out for lap in the pattern then did my 3. I waited many years to become a pilot. My Dad offered to pay for it when I was growing up but was just too interested in other things at the time. In 2003 he lost his medical but kept his Decathlon in hopes that some day I would want to become a pilot. In 2020 I had a very good opportunity for free flight lessons in exchange for hanger space at my Dads house. I couldn't pass up that opportunity. So I started working towards my private pilot's certificate. My best flight will always be my first passenger (my Dad). Sadly he passed at the young age of 85 about 6 weeks later. Fortunately I will always have that memory of him being in the back seat with me up front rather than the opposite of when I was growing up. Now I enjoy taking my daughter up flying and hope that at some point she will want to become a pilot.
Keep up the great work Stefan. You have great control of the airplane.

I soloed at 9 hrs in 1972 in a 150. It was great except on my downwind leg my engine quite!!! I thought I could make the
runway dead stick so I didn't panic. Was told later no way. Got it restarted by starting it like it was on the ground and
getting ready to fly My instructor watching me about had a heart attack. I went on and landed and everything was good.

Nicely done! Congratulations! So, on the second landing I saw the control wheel being pushed foreward a bit during the round out, makes me a little nervous at least it wasn't after a bounce trying to salvage a bad landing!
My solo (1976) I wondered if my instructor hated me and wanted to see me dead 🤣
After the airplane was airborne my thoughts were "no sense in panicking now just do what you've been doing" it worked out, 4000K hrs later I remember like it was yesterday!
Thanks for your videos they are awesome!
