- How to Spot a Fake Rolex: Whether you're a novice or an experienced watch collector, you'll probably agree that Rolex is one of the most recognized luxury brands in the world. This also means that they're one of the most counterfeited. If you're in the market for a new timepiece, this can sound intimidating, especially with NEW SUPER FAKES on the market. What exactly should you look out for? Join us today as we examine counterfeit watches within 3 different price points.
$50 Fake Rolex
It goes without saying that the cheaper the "Rolex", the greater the possibility that it's counterfeit. You'd be hard-pressed to find a genuine Rolex for $50.
If you do come across one there are a few things that you can look for to determine if it's fake.
First, make sure that the feature set being sold is available for the watch that you're purchasing. For example, the Submariner is not available with a red and blue "Pepsi" bezel. You should also look for any obvious mistakes, such as spelling errors or miss-placed text. The difference between fake and genuine Rolexes might be as simple as the order of the wording on the dial. You'll have to do a bit of research if you aren't already familiar with the fine details of the watch that you're purchasing.
You should also be mindful of cheap gold plating, which might be fading away on a fake watch. Many counterfeit Rolexes also run on a Quartz movement instead of an automatic one and have a seconds hand that ticks instead of sweeps.
$200 Fake Rolex
You'll have to examine a $200 Rolex closer than a cheaper, $50 Rolex to determine if it's fake. For example, the movement might be automatic instead of Quartz. In this case, check the functions of the movement itself. Does the date mechanism work? If it's a GMT Master, does the dedicated hand jump?
A genuine Rolex will have solid components & impressive heft to it. It will has impeccable text on the dial with crisp lines, & components that fit together perfectly with almost no space in-between. The crown on a fake Rolex will look cheaply made & lack the usual craftsmanship of a genuine watch.
The clasp & end links should have the correct stamps & marks. For example, a stainless steel clasp should not have an 18k stamp. If any detail is off, there's a high possibility that the Rolex is fake.
Another detail is the specifics of the hallmarks & engravings. First of all, are the reference & serial numbers present? The reference number is located between the lugs, and the serial number is located either between the lugs on an older watch or engraved on the inner reflector ring on a newer watch. If the Rolex markings & engravings are present, make sure that the reference number matches the watch model and that the serial number is from the correct production era.
How to Spot a $500 SUPER Fake Rolex
Some of the best counterfeit watches are difficult to spot, even by seasoned watchmakers. Many of them need to be taken apart to be deemed with certainty if they are genuine or fake. For the average customer, the trick lies in paying close attention to the fine details of the dial. A $500 super fake Rolex is on another level, & likely won't have typos or blatant font errors. It's better to look at the quality & placement of the text as well as the finish on the indices and hands. For example, the dial markers on an authentic Rolex watch have crisp, finished edges.
If the exterior of the case checks out, your next step will be to verify that the reference & serial numbers are present. If they're missing, you don't even have to bother having a watchmaker open the case for you. If they’re there and you suspect that the watch may be fake, the movement will give you a better idea of the watch's authenticity.
A really high-quality fake probably runs on an automatic movement. In that case, the functions should be the same as the model that you're trying to purchase. I.e., the date mechanism should work properly, the side pushers should coordinate with the chronograph functions, etc.
If you take a peek inside a genuine Rolex, you'll notice that the finishing is impeccable. Every component is beautifully crafted, & the movement itself fits perfectly in the case. The calibre engraving will also be visible if you're examining the movement & will verify the watch's authenticity even further.
When buying a used Rolex, pay close attention to the details of the watch that you're about to purchase. If you're not dealing with a trusted reseller & the deal seems a little too good to be true, it probably is.

It is scary seeing how good these fakes are getting with the clone movements probably being the most telling factor of how good they have become. Same perlage finish and caliber engraving.

I don't know Teddy. I don't want to be too cynical, but these big sellers like Bob's Watches do have a kind of interest in talking up the quality of fakes, don't they? The more people are scared of so-called "super-fakes", the more likely they are to pay a premium for the peace-of-mind that comes from buying from a big established company. Well okay. But in this video it's quite interesting that they choose not to show us high resolution close-up images of the fake versus real movements. Elsewhere I've seen other (much better) pictures of some of these replica movements from so called 'high end' fakes. In actual fact the internal finishes are noticeably much rougher and less refined looking than the originals. In my opinion even a non-expert person with a little bit of streetwise common sense would immediately smell a rat if he or she carefully inspected the item using some magnification.

The question to ask is if the Chinese can get so close to the real thing for peanuts in comparison (the $600 watch) that it takes an expert to tell the difference, how have they managed to do that?? If I did, I would just buy a replacement for a quarter to an eighth of the service cost!

By eyes fake can fool. However just put the fake into water afew hours and the fake will be spotted easily. And this is the easiest way to spot a fake......they have close to no water resistance (at the moment, they can improve....).

You have to realize that fakes back then were so bad and only had quartz movements. So a real Rolex stood out like a "Sunflower in a Poppy field!" The crazy thing is that i know that if i went into a shop today and spent £10,000 on a new Rolex Sub, everywhere that i wear it, most people would think that it was a fake.

Yes, quartz movements that were and still are far more accurate than the very best mechanical ones, which are not even made by Rolex. The most accurate watch l have is a $20 Casio diver "style" which has gained 2 seconds since November 5th of last year, confirmed by the WWV app and WWV itself. For those of us interested in the history of accurate, mechanical time pieces, the most fascinating and valuable ones ever made are in a museum, where they belong, the Harrison Clocks. Those are legitimate masterpieces. Every other mechanical watch is basically (maybe, an improved) copy of the original.

I own 2 Rolex's and have seen my fair share of "super-reps." I spend $250/watch to have them serviced every three or 4 years when they start running a bit wonky. Seems to me this video only reinforces the argument that Rolex's are horrifically overpriced in many cases considering you can have a high end fake that requires an expert to detect for only 1/10 the cost of a used Submariner. That's why I prefer Breitling and Omega these days.

I've seen the movement on quite a few 4130 and 3135 high-end knockoffs. Whats scary about the example you show (at 6 minutes) is its free sprung with a correct balance bridge. I've never seen this in a knockoff before.

Everyone knows that the hardest part with clothing, for example, is coming up with a great design, producing is easy. The pay of the designers is included with the price. If you're buying fakes you're basically scamming the designers of their pay. And let's not even think of the great engineers that conceive those spectacular watch mechanisms.

When you have them side by side, the pure craftsmanship and level of detail put into the real one makes it shine. When you dont have a real one to compare it too, these Super Clones ARE the real deal. They are SOOO close they fool Pawn Shops all the time.
My dad has owned a Submarine for years, when I showed him a superfake he could not tell the difference and thought I blew 10k on a watch. It's look and feel exactly the same. I didn't even pay 500 for the watch, I bought it off my mate for 350.
The rep maker probably spent less than 400 on the production of the superfakes. Imagine if they spend more and sell those watch for 1 grand. They could sell those fakes to Rolex themselves. The only reason that stop them from doing this is their target market and positioning.
Some of the newer super fakes are beginning to creep up towards the $800 price mark. There’s a factory now that’s making very good Rolex clones in actual 904L steel. The real reason, though, that a stock replica will never be perfect 1:1 has little to do with cost or craftsmanship. (Shit, just look at macros of the Ginault that costs roughly $600 to produce.)
The replica factories, just like Rolex, are greedy! They intentionally release products with flaws so they can keep on updating them and selling more with each model. This never-ending cycle has spawned a replica market within the replica market, where individuals use replica cases as a base and add real parts to them. There’s a lot more people than you would think who spend thousands assembling “superfrankens” that would fool professional jewelers...at least with the caseback on.
I don’t own any reps, but I do find the “seedier” side of the watch industry fascinating. There’s a lot more depth and nuance in replicas (and many of their buyers) than most people assume.

They aren't kidding when they're calling this a super fake. Would've been nice to see the details a bit closer, because at this zoom level, even the fake movement looked pretty convincing. Last week I watched another video on this stuff by a UK watchmaker, and the counterfeit movement he showed wasn't nearly as perfect looking as this one (cruder engravings and decorations for one thing). But this one ...? Wow.

I'm not quite sure how to tell gold-plated from solid gold, especially if the gold plating hasn't worn off yet, like on a newer fake. Also, is it really that much more expensive to put a 2.5x cyclops lens on a fake than a lesser magnification lens?
The weight is the easy way to know.
Both movements are genuine on the high end fake Submariner and the real one in this video. The cloned movements have a different balance bridge. The blue spring may have been replaced with a generic to explain the different shade of blue. The fakes can now fit genuine movements making them even more difficult to distinguish as counterfeits. I have seen many replicas with real parts installed making them nearly impossible for even an expert to tell them apart.

The fake high-end replica has a genuine movement in it. So you are basically talking out of your arse when you say “the blue is slightly different” . If so just a production variance. This type of replica is called a Frankenstein. Gen and rep parts are mixed. Some other parts are indeed fake.
Nothing is genuine in the movement believe it or not and we try not to speak out of our arse too often, it might smell.
There are 2 Chinese versions of the 3135 (clone movement) and they are indeed almost identical to the real deal but they do not have a free sprung balance as it is too difficult to regulate for the Chine rep factories.

What gets me is if the fakes are that good now, why don’t they just develop their own brand? And if they are SO CLOSE nowadays doesn’t it just show how Rolex are bending you over and shafting you. $500 vs $5000+. It’s just one reason I won’t buy a Rolex. But the sheep love them and Rolex will carry on screwing them for as much as they can.
Close indeed, but it still isn't a Rolex. Yes, the sheep will flock to Rolex but they obviously see value in the brand and willingly invest in their products. I admit, I am one of those sheep and I am proud.
War Gasam could you explain please? If these fakes are really close, why would they be fit for the bin in 2 years? If the movement was properly lubricated and the watch is made of stainless, why should it last any less time than say a Longine or Oris? These can and do last as long as (or longer than) a Rolex. If the fakers are building something “that close” why would it necessarily fail? Okay, there’s no customer support network or spares available but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to fall to bits does it? Of course I’m talking about these high end fakes not the usual junk watches. I’m just playing devils advocate here. I don’t agree with or support fake watches but I do think with a little lateral thinking these watchmakers could actually make a half decent product of their own and probably make more money in the long run.

A lot of them are fitted with the Chinese Seagull movement that is an exact copy of an eta movement, made on the same machinery purchased from Switzerland!
They won’t, but if they do fail they can be replaced for less than the cost of a service on a genuine model!

My uncle had some fake watches from the 90s. The funniest one I saw was his fake black dial cellini. On the watch they spelled "Geneve" as "Genexe" and the back was a pop off back only about 1/3 the size of the case. Also had a fake oysterquartz instead of saying "oysterquartz" at the top it just said "quartz" at the bottom. Also had "oysterdate" at the top instead and had the 1930s rolex design on the back. They sure have come a long way in these nice fake watches

In the "Super Fake" the movement is a genuine 3135 from rolex, it's some kind of franken for sure, Rep externals and gen movement, this doesn't make it a "500$" super fake, but a 2500-3500$ franken watch

hmm... the first ones are junk but the last one - supposedly the "super fake" doesnt seem like a fake at all - its beat up in general but dial side up as far as I can see, has nice AR on the cyclops, nice bezel and dial, rounded markers at 6 &9, correct SEL gap as per the genuine. The 3135 movement is genuine, has a free sprung balance and is nicely finished as per genuine. Not sure if this is some kind of "franken" watch or something with lots of genuine parts which would make it far more expensive than $500. Beyond that, not quite sure what the point is here.

The details you pointed out were pretty much too small to see. You need to get close up on the print. Show the close up of the details you are talking about. One of the case backs seemed to have a different finish from the real thing. It seemed less polished.
I wonder also if the spring bars are the same between the two. It would be funny if rolex is using the same spring bars are the fakes. For my 7k+ i would want those spring bars to be special too.
We needed more close ups in this video. There are subtle details that even if you only carry one of those 2x pocket magnifyers, you can see to tell. You should check weights as well. The weights on fakes is often significantly off even on the good ones. They often dont use the same weight of rotor and that can make a difference when combined with some of the other inferior materials they use
They even use eta movement with all the looks and engraving inside them. Can't tell the difference even when a certified rolex technician check inside. He had to disassemble the movement for him to know

Believe it or not, that watch is completely fake including the movement upon closer inspection. It's quite scary the attention to detail these factories put into making these counterfeit watches!

There is no rep movement with a free sprung balance, blue hair spring yes, and no rep movement will take a genuine Rolex balance, it’s been tried and didn’t work.

I've got a Datejust 41 that's almost indistinguishable from the real thing. The only way to spot it without opening it is by really minimal quality assurances. Like the crown on the outer ring lines directly with the 12 o'clock marking and between the date and the just there's a minimal discrepancy in the distance. Everything else is amazingly well done. I think these companies would make an awesome watch if they put their mind to it.

Diminishing return in not the traditional economic sense but the buyers emotional return from purchasing a large ticket item.
