I like CC as well. I'm probably an outlier but as a photographer I really dislike messing with color and everything in post, it's just too many variables. I just like to rely on the simulations, kind of like back in the day where you were at the mercy of the film stock and how someone else processed it.
I'm in this camp as well. Not a fan of post processing other than a crop here and there.
Great discussion of Classic Chrome. At 70 yrs old, I know exactly the color and look you were showing in your examples. Nice.
Excellent video. I think this is the first video that I've watched that mentions memory color. Very interesting to see the comparisons. I like to use Astia for products because the colors are a little more accurate to me but use Classic Chrome for everything else i.e. pictures of friends/family and street.

Fujifilm is the king of the hill regarding colour science! 😊
It's rare these days that I learn something new about photography. I have seen these color profiles before and thought... what's all the fuss about, there's really not much difference. Why did they go to all the trouble of creating this for such a small effect. With the explanation I have gained some real insight and can appreciate the color grading. This brings me back to a photo shoot I did with headshots for 250 people. Every time I go back and look at that set of photos I'm extremely dissatisfied with the color. They all look pink or red to me. Everyone else says they are fantastic and my wife thinks I'm crazy for "being too critical." Many people bought the photos and hung them on the wall and gave them as gifts to family. I had experienced the effect of staring at them too long and realizing they DO LOOK GOOD! without understanding photo memory. This is such fantastic information.

I went through Classic Chrome colors deeply and I was surprised that Classic Chrome look different on different Fujifilm cameras.
Example: same photo same settings, classic chrome colors look brighter and more vibrant on the fujifilm xf10 than x100t.
and it is big different, how do u explain that?

The flexibility built into my XT4 allows me to bracket with 3 different film sims. CC is always one of them and is usually the one that I end up liking the most.

I remember when I got my very first fuji X system camera, Velvia and Astia were my go to film simulations non stop. Eight years later and a new Fuji in my bag, I've found myself shooting ProNeg Std, or Provia, and Classic Chrome, then going further and masking everything, and making more subtle adjustments. I still occasionally shoot Astia, or Velvia, but almost inevitably I change the film simulation over in post. Love the content.

Excellent video. I'm a landscape photographer using a Fuji XT-2. Lately I have been enjoying another Fuji user images and he said it was Classic Chrome. I look forward to giving it a go soon.
Regarding image processing, I believe another difference is that Photoshop and the like make changes to the final image pixels, whereas the Fuji in-camera film simulations make adjustments a step earlier than that, i.e. by employing the camera's image processor to make the changes.

Being old I grew up on Kodachrome and then when I started working as a photographer we used Ectachrome because it was easier to get it processed. Then came Velvia and just blew our minds with all the colours. But still, I think most fondly of Kodachrome.
This is a follow up comment to my initial one of several days ago. I said that I enjoyed your video and that I would go back and reexamine Classic Chrome after not being satisfied with what I perceived as blandness in situations that Provia and Velvia excelled.
In particular, your comments about the rendering of the sky was interesting to me and I went out for three straight days shooting scenes that had large areas of sky against town scapes. After 300-plus photos. I found that you were correct, the removal of magenta was clear and the contrast of sky and clouds was a look that I have come to recognize as the Classic Chrome rendering. I also found that exposure compensation of about minus 1/3rd of a stop punches up the colors a bit without turning them overly saturated. I even got a great semi backlit portrait that had one of the most pleasing skin tones...soft and beautiful.
Anyhow, because of your video, I'm now getting more satisfying results from my Fujifilm cameras. Thanks!

Thoroughly inspiring stuff! I am in the process of configuring my newly acquired XT1. Which is proving to be a challenge. And not because of the machine, but because of my own thoughts keep changing on what I want the colors to be. In our minds we already have certain presets, dialed in and we tie those closely to memory. And those memories are uniquely personal in first instance. These may be shared by many but they can each evoke a certain and specific personal emotion. Colors trigger a state of mind that we want to match the scene. And vise versa. The psychology of color, how you describe it is spot on. It shows excellently why setting up for color is very much a process of thought, in first instance. It also shows why, as your memory grows with personal experience, we may well end up preferring different color presets over time.
Please consider expanding this video with more of your thoughts on this subject! Why, for example, do some prefer bw? Cheers!!
Trust me you do not want me to get started on black and white. If it was up to me I would only shoot black and white 😁📷

Back in ‘89’, when I began to move from Kodachrome to Fujichrome, initałly with the long discontinued 100D, later falling in love with Velvia (50). If my images have no human element (Velvia is not kind to flesh tones), Velvia was my go-to film, otherwise, I shot with Provia. Today, I do the same with my lineup of Fuji cameras, though I do experiment with the other simulations, as well as playing with some recipes from FujiX Weekly.

I really enjoyed your comment about how which ever simulation that you use, it will be "correct" after looking at it for a few minutes. That portrait shot in Provia was jarring after looking at the CC version and adjusting to that rendering. Initially the Provia shot was perfect.
I will give Classic Chrome another try. I'm older than you I'd guess, read Life Magazine all through the '60s but the first Fujifilm camera that I got with Classic Chrome was too subdued for my taste. I'll spend some more time on that simulation.
It's kind of frustrating because you begin to question what you think is "right"

Memory colour - I love it. I've been in photography since 1974 when I bought my first camera, an SLR Konica T3 and I read anything on photography I could get my hands on, but never a mention of memory colour. I am older than you and like you spent hours and hours pouring through images in Life, Look, National Geographic (no - not for those reasons) etc. From time to time I lived in a town in the Canadian Rockies - Jasper - and due to the fact it was (and is) deep into the Rockies, any technology in communications came late. I can remember the first phones in 1957, there was no tv and radio during the day was limited to the CBC (Canadian version of BBC). My TV time went to looking through all the old magazines fortunately my grandfather collected. I'm sure he looked at them for the same reason I did, it was our TV to the world.
And yet my memory colour has not been defined by any of the films available out there but by artwork - particularly the Impressionists both European and Canadian. And with them colour is bright, vivid, and contrasty. So when many lament the colours and films of yore, I don't get it. So I play with contrast, dynamic range and colours in Velvia - that's my colour memories. With the "art" of photography, its about making new memories, not creating old ones. Heck, if we were having a discussion of beers, the old farts would want pilsners and the millenniums - craft beer. The art of photography (to me and for me) is about making craft beers and leave the pilsners to the old guys in the rockers.

Great video, and I suspect I am older. And I have the Kodachrome slides to prove it. I've defaulted to Classic Chrome since I started shooting with Fuji late last year. Worked well until I started shooting a documentary at a local food pantry. Shots with food needed a bit more punch...

@@BoorayPerry had a city walk and really enjoyed myself. Now I’m stuck uploading because they show up as raw and jpeg however look identical on the iPad and if I click i they all say jpeg! Some are showing that they won’t upload and some have a black stripe down each side?! They also show an mover cloud with an i inside and a reference number, I’m currently totally baffled and searching CZcams 😳😂

Great review about color science. It is so true about color perception. I was all in the Sony Alpha en Sigma camera's which are great. Also fullframe sensors. I thought Apc where inferior than FULL-FRAME sensors. I noticed the Fujifilm X H2s. What a camera with the beautiful color sumilations of Kodak. Really stunning color tech. It is also how I remember my old analog photo prints. It seems more realistic than other brands which are beautiful too but dont have the perspective how you really remember how it was with ordinaire prints.
Hay Booray, thanks for sharing your knowledge of this. I find it very interesting. In the 70’s I lived in South Africa and shot with Agfachrome. Classic Chrome is the nearest Fuji have in their simulations but probably not enough magenta removed. But now, thanks to you, I know how to try to tweak it to my memory colour. What a revelation. Thank you so much. Subbed. I shoot with Nikon Z so will have a play in post and also see if I can set the in-camera adjustments similarly. Otherwise I’m going to HAVE to buy a Fuji! It's really been interesting to me to see how much time people will spend trying to get their images to look like what they saw as a kid. It's really sweet and nostalgic. 😁📷
I really like CC, Eterna and Provia. I made 3 custom modes or 'recipies' with them and I like to use them all the time. But I also really like Pro Neg Std and Pro Neg High. For me, i usually want to capture a more realistic look and the Eterna profile makes a great starting point from which to build a recipe to achive that, since its a softer tonality. Colors are great to start with also, very subdued. Pro Neg Std is also very good at that realistic look, but Eterna has a feeling to it that is ever better. At the end of the day, all film simulations look good if properlly tweeked and/or depending on the lighting of the scene.

Honestly, I think Classic Chrome looks more like Ektachrome E6 than Kodachrome. To me Kodachrome favored reds and warm colors, while Ektachrome leaned much more towards blue and cooler colors.

yup classic chrome is definitely the more cool and contrasty of the two. custom film sim Classic chrome, color +1 and +2 Red, -5 Blue looks pretty darn close to KodaChrome.
I’ve said this for years, but thought I was alone in my observation. It’s nice to hear someone else sees it that way too!

When I shot color film, it was always Kodachrome 25. I really liked the colors and how they made aircraft look on a screen. Vivid is showroom tv.

Cool vid. I use Classic Chrome for photography 90+% of the time with a couple of different recipes based on the film simulation. Not only is it awesome for photos, but it's also great for video too. I use CC and Eterna 50/50 each when making short films more or a less.
As a 90's kid I think I connect with Classic Neg. because thats the spectrum of color from my childhood.

While I shoot in RAW for corporate headshots, I have Capture One on my tablet set up to display in Pro Neg Hi because it looks the most natural to my clients when reviewing the images. Before the world went to $#!+ I did online dating profile shoots 3-4 times a month and almost always used Classic Chrome straight out of camera (once in a while I'd switch to Velvia/Vivid if it fit the scene). Most of those clients were in their mid to late 20's and loved the look.
I'll bet that's the influence of movie posters. :)

Great explanation my favorite fuji simulation. On my first fuji camera x100 original was Astia my favorite. Now i use X100t mostly with CC.

What settings do you like then for your everyday use? I have set my Classic Chrome as Fuji X Weekly recipe for X-trans3. When it comes to color, film, simulations, the best simulation depends on your application. Overall, I prefer ASTIA. I remember when Fuji first released ASTIA. At the time, my go to film was Ptovia. Fuji claimed that the AST in ASTIA stood for accurate skin tones. It did give me very nice skin tones in the film had an overall soft quality to it that made it the perfect film for the nude studies that were my primary subject of the time. I still prefer it when I am taking photos that are going to have people in them. Especially, if I am in close to them. Otherwise I use Provia or ProNeg High. I tried to like Classic Chrome because the literature said that it was a copy of Kodachrome. But when I used it, I did not think it look anything like Kodachrome. So, I don’t really use it. When it comes to black and white, I really like Fuji’s Acros simulation.

I love classic chrome, its also my default go to simulation. 2nd is monochrome.
Classic chrome is great for shooting light as with monochrome. It takes away the colour distraction from the image by making it conform and melt into the background for focus on the light.

I keep all my settings on default. I find that my attempts to do a better job than the Fuji engineers fall short. :)

Great video! Booray, do you use RAW or film simulations (perhaps both) when you shoot weddings and events? I found it very interesting that you shoot portraits with film sims as I have never heard anybody say that before. I mostly just hear, "RAW, RAW, RAW!" I have never really considered using film sims for client work, but I often dream about shooting in JPEG for the simplicity. Usually I don't express crazy thoughts like that. I hope no one I know reads this.
I shoot everything in raw and classic Chrome. Personally, I think that Fuji's default film setting is a little too saturated for my taste

2:39 Surprised to learn that they used to use a slide film (i.e. Kodachrome) for use in magazine publications. I assumed they would have used a colour negative film.

Provia from what I’ve heard is almost always pronounced without stressing the “i”. It is one of Fuji’s color transparency or “slide” film stocks. It’s absolutely designed to be a slightly less saturated slide alternative to velvia with landscapes in mind. I am assuming that would be what they based that original film simulation after. I’m really looking forward to my transition hopefully soon to the Fuji digital system so that I can try the classic chrome myself. I’m at a weird inbetween point where I am shooting film again and seeing it differently than I did growing up. There’s just so much information out there now for us to see it all differently and I find it mesmerizing to dive into. I love your channel man thanks for sharing such enjoyable content.🤘

Sir. Have a question. I have my X100f. I have tried so many recipes from people on CZcams and just like simple and so many times it just looks wrong. I want to use Classic Chrome and Astia correctly not mess up the colors etc… if I just use from the camera and simple no changes, am I okay?
For Me, there is no recipe that works perfectly in every situation. I think you're going to find that you have to bounce around depending on what you're shooting. I see people who use a homegrown recipe for their photography but they tend to be street shooters who like a certain gritty style for all their street photography no matter what. If you want to keep it as simple as possible. Set your camera to the default settings and then just pick one built in film style that you like and stay with it.
Hi Booray, I used Classic Chrome on my X100F but the images came out extremely flat. The skin tones were bleached out and almost plastic-like, as well as highlights, The shadow areas were too dark with no details. My settings are NR -2, ToneH -2, ToneS +2, Color 0, Sharp +2, WB Auto, DR Auto. . There must be some settings I got wrong giving these weird results. If I convert the RAF files to Classic Chrome, they come out perfect. Regards Antonius

I started using Classic Chrome its great really love it,
, then I discovered Astia & found for a punchier outdoor skin tones it gives a more natural colourful alternative.
Provia has never been Fuji’s portrait chrome. You should have used Astia which was designed for skin tones.

No adjustments. I've tried but I've never found it to be better than what Fuji sets up as default
EyE takes advantage of Fujifilm’s uniquely useful Simulation bracketing mode much of the time..... Chrome/Privia/B&W combo for example, and decide when I get home which treatment fits each. When I shoot single shots, tho, I usually stick to Chrome (could use a little less oranging of the reds, but that would likely have a corresponding negative effect elsewhere on the palette).
P.S. -Color Memory, Yes..... I’m 72, been shooting for 50 odd years or so)

I have been shooting in RAW and converting my favorites in camera to the JPEG film simulation, sometimes Classi Chrome. Is this the same as taking the original in JPEG with a pre-set Classic Chrome film simulation?
It should be, yes.

Converting the RAW to JPEG in-camera is EXACTLY the same as if you had pre-set a film simulation and shot using the same settings you used to later manually convert the file.
You can also use Fujifilm X RAW Studio to easily do the same. Save the RAF file to your computer (it must be on your computer) plug in your Fujifilm camera via USB (make sure the camera is set to USB RAW Conv) and then X RAW Studio uses the CAMERA to convert the RAF file to JPEG. It is not a RAW converter on its own, it has to have the camera plugged in. That is why it is exactly the same result as if you had taken the shot.
You can then save that RAF file to all the available film simulations, changing the various settings to try out what they do. You can save your favourite settings as new profiles to use again and on some models you can upload the settings to the camera using one of the custom settings slots.
