Hate to tell you something but old fashioned dynamite was made with nitro glycerin which will blow up if you can hit it with a bullet
Old fashioned dynomite would sweat nitro glycerin. It could be super unstable and explode when struck with a hard object.

Some types of dynamite would not fire if you hit it with a bullet. Grades like 80% and up will. 80% has a yellow wrapper. So, prop got it right.

What year did cardboard ammo boxes start being used by ammo manufacturers?
As far back as the 1880's. Dynamite was still in wood up to around 1965 going by the makers date codes.
I'm just grateful that they put the detail of carrying extra ammo in (& actually reloading) when so many movies just have the 37 shot 6 shooter.

Great movie up until this part. I never liked it when cowboys used dynamite like hand grenades to get rid of the bad guys. There's one western where Sterling Hayden throws a perfect strike from inside a locomotive cab(!) up a hill to kill 2 bad guys (Clayton Moore is one) hiding behind a rock. Here they score a direct hit on the barn with John Russell and mob walking out with only their clothes dirty. Up until now, bad guys were dropping like bowling pins.
John Wayne sucks!!!
