    ALTERNATIVE TO TEXTURING:
    you can use the texture painting feature within Blender. its similar to using any other drawing application, you can create your own brushes and paint directly onto the model. however what I think is more notable is that you can select exactly what part of the mesh you wish to use and texture. if you have unwrapped the model appropriately. you can just press "L" while enabling the mask feature, so that it paints only on that island. you can also select individual faces within edit mode too, and go back to texture painting to otherwise texture a specific area that isn't unwrapped on its own.
    hope that information helps you. there's plenty of information on the topic!

      as for shadows and highlights, you can also learn about ambient occlusion mapping and normal mapping (a process that is very much useful for lighting detail).
      if you are someone who prefers a more realistic approach to textures and mapping, that is how you would normally go about things. you can even go through a process of "metalness" so that certain parts of objects have shine and others do not.

    • @fuzziau5669
      @fuzziau5669 Před rokem +1

      id also suggest if you're making dirt textures that you use 3D texture painting because you'll run into seam issues where there's a visible discontinuation of the texture. painting directly onto the object on a seperate layer will allow you to have much more seamless effects than doing it on a 2D landscape (which I don't recommend as is. at least on detailed objects where you need to do potentially hundreds of UV islands)

    Hi! Firstly thank you for your tutorials and every detail they contain, that helps a lot since I'm just a programmer! I was wondering if you tried texturing inside Blender itself? I guess there is no support for layers and I don't know the tools for drawing and painting but you can paint directly on the model what is very useful. I like your approach of texturing in an external software but I was just wondering if it had limits instead of painting on the model directly. I aim only lowpoly style so I think your way will do it!

    • @LMHPOLY
      @LMHPOLY  Před 2 lety +17

      Hi Jordan,
      Thank you for watching!
      Yes, you can paint directly in Blender. What I didn't like about, is that there are no layers. I don't feel comfortable painting without the layers yet, lol.
      Using other software to make textures is good because it gives me more tools to work with. And, of course, layers! Which is the most important for texturing, so you can work in a non-destructive way. And it's so much faster and easier to make simple changes if you need them in the future.
      Using external software like Affinity Photo as I did, or others like Photoshop or GIMP has a downside: you can't see the result immediately on the 3d mesh itself. For example, if you want to texture a character, it would be best to paint directly on the 3d mesh. You can do it in a blender but with minimal tools. I would use other software like Substance Painter for this kind of texture, which is a very powerful texturing tool.

    Great tutorial, super well explained! I was going to comment that the only thing I would change is maybe talk about the fact that on a real case, this texture doesn't make much sense because it repeats a lot, and could be alot smaller. But after I finished watching the video, I see you did that to add detail later. The result is SO GOOD!! Can't wait for part 4!!

    • @LMHPOLY
      @LMHPOLY  Před 3 lety +3

      Thanks! If I wouldn't add those details and the text on the barrel than yes, you should just make 1 Wood Plank and repeat around all of the barrel.

    I'm having an issue with my UV map export to Gimp. Some of the lines on the UV map appear faded after import, however the PNG file looks fine when viewed in any other medium. Gimp is disagreeing with something and making most of the map hard to see. I can provide images of the problem if anyone is prepared to reach out and would greatly appreciate any help!

    I have a question. At about 18:40 when it's time to move layers into folders, My layers are not displaying once they move into the folder. I checked that the folder itself wasn't set to be invisible, I've checked that it's not an issue with layer order. At this point I'm stumped.
    Also, I've used Blender before but this is my first time using GIMP to make a game asset, so it could be something very simple that I'm just missing. Any help is appreciated.
