Hi, Jamie and sherpa vet tech here. If you go the route of extracting that tooth, you're going to want to find a specialty center, not necessarily for the tooth itself, but for the anesthesia; because you will want him to be monitored by an anesthesiologist. That's where the procedure gets the most risky. If he has difficulties with his liver, we don't necessarily want him under anesthesia for a long period of time because it's the liver that helps process the anesthesia and work it through the body. So you want him to be monitored closely. Do your research and find a place that maybe is a specialty dental center that has an anesthesiologist that can monitor him closely and knows exactly what signs to look for. Wishing you both the best! ❀

Hey hey, vet student here, 100% agree with this! You'd have the vet that specialises in dentistry along with an experienced tech crew and another vet that specialises in anaesthesia monitoring Sherpa due to his health issues and age. I'm not in the UK but the vet school I go to has this capability, maybe ask your local vets about the nearby University programs if you can't find a dental specialist in private practice? At least where I'm from the specialist teams don't have student involvement, we're just involved in the GP side of the clinic in our final year.

I agree, my 15 year old grand-dog had similar issues and needed quite a few of his teeth removed due to a difficult inflammation in his lower jaw. The vet recommended surgery after poor results from antibiotics. My daughter chose to first have a heart specialist do a thorough check-up and once thumbs up she opted for surgery, which was performed with extra monitoring during anesthesia. It all went very well and with a quick recovery. I wish I could recommend the vet clinic but it’s in Sweden. Sending my love and wishing all the best for Sherpa â€ïžđŸ‡žđŸ‡Ș

My elderly cat just had the same problem - 2 teeth needed to be taken out but she has liver disease and chronic kidney disease, as well as other digestive issues. The vet told me, in February 2023, that I probably only have 2 years left with her but I still couldn't let her stay in pain. The worry about whether or not she will make it through was real and palpable. She did make it through beautifully and she's thriving at home.

we have a senior dog (12yrs old) had the same problem, vets worried about giving her anesthesia to take some bad teeth out. they gave the same meds painkillers and antibiotics, but in the long run our dog got sicker, and she was in more pain, so vet decided to pull all the rotten teeth, gave her less the anesthesia, pull out the bad teeth, she made it out alive through surgery, after a day she was ok, eating and drinking. no more pains, she went to live three more years.

The entitlement of some people unbelievable. That’s a difficult decision to make. Here are my thoughts on the antibiotic and pain killers. Agree about the effect it could have on his liver in the long run. Now I know in humans taking too much antibiotic your system can get used to them and no longer be effective. I would think that would also happen in our fur babies. If that’s true then it sounds like in the long run he would have to have the tooth extracted. My suggestion would look up on the internet to see if you can find any vet dental specialists. My prayers are with you and Sherpa. ❀❀❀❀❀❀

As, for the pain relievers, depends which one they use. If it's an opiate, harm to the liver and kidneys is neligible compared to some of the non-opioid pain relievers. I don't know about England, but in America vets are often using buprenorphine. It's milder, lasts longer and comes in liquid for easier administration.

I agree - must have a specialist for Sherpie! I have a kitty with a chronic dental/gum problem and _so far_ she is going along alright with medications. The real "solution" is to have every single one of her teeth pulled out. If that became a necessity, the ONLY option would be a feline dental specialist. (She is 16 years old and that's why I'm using the herbal and homeopathic meds instead of rushing to the surgery. She developed stomatitis, NOT a rotten tooth. If she had a bad tooth it would definitely have to come out right away. Again, *it would have to be a vet dental surgeon who was focused on cats.* It's a delicate surgery in cats.) My 16.5-year-old Jack Russel has had three dental extractions in the last three years. I know every dog is different so this situation may not be the same as yours but we were advised to manage her pain when she first started showing signs, because she was 13, meaning she was on pain meds and uncomfortable for about a year. It got to the point where both her physical and mental health were declining and we decided to put her in with the real fear she wouldn't make it. Three days after her dental she was bouncing around like a puppy and loving life again.
The third time she had an abscess and a few teeth removed and she was back to eating the same night.
Obviously always do what you think is best for Sherpa but I really wish we hadn't waited so long to get her in for that first dental.
One thing they did to reduce her risk in surgery was to do blood tests first to see if she was fit enough, as she has some growths on her spleen, and then made sure she had plenty of IV fluids throughout the surgery. We have had 3.5 more years with her now and even though she's had to go in for two more dentals and had a grand total of about 30 teeth out she has been so much happier off of her pain meds.

So happy your JRT got through all those surgeries so well. I have a 16yr old JRT and I'm terrified of her getting something that she would have to have surgery for. She has a huge lipoma that we thought she would have to have surgery for but the vet advised to leave it unless it causes her problems. Touch wood it just looks bad but isn't causing her any problems so far. We lost her twin sister 3 years ago of a sudden heart attack that had never showed in any examinations so I'm terrified it could be hereditary and an anaesthetic could cause it. I don't envy anyone having to make the decision to have their old pet operated on

Jaime, I would do what the Veterinarian suggests to do. I think pulling the tooth might be the way to go instead of antibiotics and having a poor liver. Prayers are with you dear Sherpa. You are a beauty, bless you Sherpa and your beloved Dad too.❀❀❀❀❀❀❀Joan and Keith 😊😊

My greyhound got kidney problems after having so many bad teeth. She had 13 removed sortly after I got her, thank goodness she is still at the early stage of kidney failure and she's now nearly 12. Greyhounds all have teeth problems, something to do with the acid they produce in their saliva.

Poor boy. I just lost my dog that I had for 17 years. She was 19 years old. It is like your best friend. I would think having the tooth pulled would be best, but then again who am I. I am sure you will make the best decision. We all love Sherpa and don't want to see him suffer at all. đŸ«¶đŸ’•đŸ«¶

Jamie, I would take the chance and have his tooth removed. Sherpa is a strong pup and has come through before when he had his teeth removed. My sweet angel Sherpa looked so sad near the end of the video. Please give him cuddles, kisses, and belly rubs from me, please.

Poor Sherpa 😱. What a horrible spot for you to be in, Jamie. You’re the best Sherpa daddy ever. You would go to the ends of the earth for him 💖. I love your idea of looking for a dog dentist. Do an online search and I pray you find one. My Border Collie, Maggie, is about 14 (found as a stray) so I understand your worries with an older dog. May God help you with your decision. It’s not an easy one 😞. I also pray for pain relief for your boy đŸ’–đŸŸđŸŸđŸ’–.

Anyone with negative comments about your situation or about posting older videos, will have to get a tooth pulled, but until then please just completely ignore them
And I don't care how old the video was, it was a good video and I always enjoy watching you guys, you give so much peace, joy and love, more than you know, and it will always come back to you, know you are immensely appreciated
Whatever decision you make will be in the best interest for Sherpa and therefore will be the right one, I do personally feel you are spot on in your assessment of your options given the situation though, I've been in these difficult circumstances so I do understand and am wishing you both all the best and all the love and healing
Blessings to you, I hope Sherpa feels better soon ❀ đŸŸ

If you decide to get it out, ask for full mouth xrays beforehand so if there are any other suspicious teeth those can be dealt with at the same time

Hey Jamie and Sherps - We've got a 14yo GSD at home, and her teeth have gotten a bit dodgy as well. Our vet here in the US extracted the worse of her teeth. They were really careful during the procedure, monitoring her while she was under anesthesia. To help maintain her remaining teeth - and help with her arthritis, the vet recommended putting her on a combination of medications: galliprant, gabbapentin, and a CoQ10. The idea behind the combination was to help relieve the inflammation and provide a bit of pain relief. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with any vets on your side of the Pond, but when you visit them, see if they'll prescribe those meds for Sherps. Praying for ya'll.

My Shar Pei, Bubba, is also 13 1/2. About two weeks ago I faced the same decision, because some of his teeth had gotten bad. Instead of liver trouble, Bubba has a very bad heart murmur. The vets and I knew it was risky to put him under, even being careful as we were. In the end I decided to go forward with having his problem teeth out. My logic was, even if I lose him under anesthesia, I have to do what's best for him, and that was getting rid of his bad teeth.
Choosing to do nothing was easier for me, but it wasn't fair to him. You will make the best decision for you and Sherpie, based on what's right for the both of you.
FWIW, Bubba came through the surgery fine, and is feeling better than he has in a long time.

You do not have to apologize for what or when you post! I'm very happy for everything you post! The tooth looks painful. Getting repeated infections is not good. Better to eliminate the infection but not if there's risk for his life. . Probably the sedation is the bigger risk for him. Try to find a dentist that treats dogs together with a vet. â™„ïžđŸ„°đŸ™
