Jim Keller, the architect behind the original Athlon 64 and Athlon XP talks about the exciting new Zen architecture that has proven since to dethrone Intel from the PC crown.
Since then AMD's market value has surpassed that of intel by more than 20 Billion dollars. - Věda a technologie
The Return of the King
So...
Did you end up happy with Zen?
@Henning Malland Perhaps you should upgrade now :)
The more I read about this guy, the more respect I have for him.
He worked on Apple CPUs, and upcoming promising AMD ZEN.
He is simply a legend and seems modest.
I really admire people like Jim Keller. I can't even begin to imagine how difficult it must be to design a new microarchitecture.
Clone the man, several times.
After watching Fridman's conversation w/ Jim Keller, I ask myself why shouldn't we make many clones of every very good mind like Jim Keller?
Words right outta my mouth.
See the lex interview comments.
And look where Zen is at now. Absolutely incredible work, Jim Keller.
AMD AMD AMD ! GOGOGO YOU CAN DO IT
I'm from the future. They did it.
We need to have Jim Keller status in every university and worship it with a glow in your eyes.
we are so lucky to have this guy....they should clone him..
Jim Keller, the architect behind the athlons that hammered intel, oh yeah... this is gonna be good!
+reymond seracarpio Here's a cookie for that well placed pun.
To those who may be unaware. The successor to the original K7 Athlon CPU microarchitecture and the world's first ever 64bit x86 CPU microarchitecture was code named "Hammer" or alternatively "SledgeHammer".
Better known as K8, Keller had a hand in forging this Hammer which enabled AMD to break the back of Intel and control 50% share of market for a brief period of time. The only period of time the company had ever controlled as much market share in its history.
Here in 2021 this statement is true !
Netburst and bullsozer were both experimentation that taught them a lot about how not to engineer a processor.
Jim Keller is back, and like he said he loves CPUs. I'm most certain AMD is going to put a great product for next year, I can't wait for this one. I have a very good feeling about it.
AtiCrossfireX
So, they will make a great product because is jim keller love CPU's LOL
AMD fanboys come up with some of the stupidest thing I ever heard.
maroom1 "So, they will make a great product because is jim keller love CPU's LOL"
Thats what he said.... the man has passion and is smart. AMD was having problems after he left, only really since Phenom came out did Intel get the performance lead, before that point it was almost always AMD.
+maroom1 if I'm a fan boy, what are you? Let me guess Intel right...
maroom1 not because is Jim Keller love CPU's, because Jim Keller is passionate about CPU's. Go read more, so you can understand. Jim's history with AMD and he's successful work.
fossilfern
Actually AMD only took the lead when Intel released netburst (pentium 4). Also, core 2 duo and quad came out a little more than 1 year before AMD released phenom.
I'm always amazed by this video every time i watch this. Jim Keller is truly a Legend. I can't wait to see the final Product on 2017.
It's like you can see him deconstructing the entire design transistor by transistor in his mind as he's talking.
Yes, finally my favourite company starts to move again! I really wants to see this New CPU giving the performance we need and the price that I love.
No one can make Intel shit their pants like Jim Keller. Ryzen and Threadripper are out and kicking butts again but we never hear about people like him. He deserves way more credit but I'd say he doesn't really care that much about such fleeting and unsubstantial stuff like being famous.
Merging ARM and x86 is interesting. I'd love to see something of a Hybrid between Windows 8 and Windows RT in the future with this kind of platform. Where the core OS that doesn't need to be high performance itself can use ARM cores to save battery life in a notebook, and then there are the x86 cores as well for high performance and legacy applications.
13:49 HBM confirmed !
14:06 HSA . . . Pay Attention. Performance enhanced by HSA is incredible. Compute Cores (CPU/GPU sharing memory) are the future of computing. The LibreOffice suite is already compatible with HSA, now it's time to get video rendering on the same page
I really, really wanna see what he can give us and I wanna see it in 2016 and I wanna see it with 14nm finfet. I really do hope that and will kick ass on both sides CPU and GPU and have great performance, great power efficiency etc. We truly need innovation and competition.
***** intel closed it's fabs in Israel years ago btw..
*****
news to me have a link?
One more reason to buy AMD i would say.
***** buying just specifics not from there is not going to hurt Intel at all though. More people will buy Intel than will boycott regardless of some hate you have for a specific country. Intel last I knew made most of it's money within the USA and Asia. AMD is also an American company. You buying either actually has no effect on the country you hate when they are both rooted in the USA that supports Israel. Your logic doesn't seem to incorporate this. Unless you can find a chip fab with modern architecture not founded and operated from the USA then you are S.O.L.
+Raidenway The principle behind AMD's octa-core versus Intel's quad-core is that to the operating system, they were both octa-cores. It was simply a different way of handling the core design, and ultimately, Intel's was stronger.
Put your volume on 100% and enjoy the video :P
he already know whats will happen in next 2 years..
# thrust me i'm an engineer
Been a fan of AMD since their release of the K7 architecture in the early 2000s. Still a fan. I feel like with this new release it will make them a dominating force, not just market-wise but finally some solid performance innovations that will be tough to compete with.
Ian Alix hoping for da same . im saving up for zen ..
i think zen will be changing force and will give amd marke share but intel would be still on the top BUT when amd get mo ey from zen then they can make better architecture and be better than intel
He looks so much better with a beard.
i say they focus on true cores again like the phenom ii thuban days :)
skotty523 Yes true cores even if it means making the chip bigger. Smaller isnt always better.
Yor Highness thats what they are doing making full cores instead of clusters sharing an fpu
Smaller manufacturing process is always better, but yeah, a larger die would be good for performance but very bad for cost, temperatures, and power consumption.
I didn't realize Troy Aikman was into microchips.
I really love AMD and their processors, have been using them for years on. Still it was quite funny when Jim Keller said that the ARM architecture was so new and so was its echo system. Well the first ARM Chip was put to function in 1985 and the first desktop machine using the ARM cpu was The Acorn Archimedies in 1987:)
So no the architecture is not new at all:)
Other than that I am very exited about this Skybridge architechure from AMD:)
wouldn't this be a RISC architecture chip?
Think he was referring more specifically to ARMv8, not ARM in general, lol.
ok, I'm confused
Richard Stevens
Yes I think so since the orginal arm design was a risc architecture.
However it will be very nice to see arm cpu's in desktop machines again:)
yes I still think about getting an Acorn Archimedes A3010
Is it just this video or does Jim look like he could punch you through 3 walls? Either way hoping AMD start hitting like they did back in the day.
fossilfern There was another AMD guy that I remember seeing awhile ago who was almost the same way. I'm thinking AMD has free gyms in their buildings that the customers are forced to use. XD
fossilfern Jim Keller looks like Mark Rippetoes long lost brother hahaha.
3 years later i can tell you hell yeah
THANK YOU TEAM LEADER AND CEO OF ZEN Suzzane Plummer
Only part that scares me is when Keller says they'll take the best of both of the designs they have. Maaaayyyyybeee if they ONLY get the best from Bulldozer, but otherwise I'd rather they just let it completely die off. Otherwise, I'm pretty excited. In Keller We Trust.
"Only" take the best from 15h (Bulldozer)? Jaguar (16h) is one of the best designs they've done in a while, and is pretty much superior to anything Intel has in that segment. There's a lot of IP and concepts they could leverage from 16h that would be fantastic for the new designs. But whatever it is they've reused, they've already done so as these architectures have been in development since mid-2012 or so (around the time Keller re-joined AMD.)
Naroon201 I haven't really even looked at the mobile stuff. Probably should, but I get distracted pretty easily... =P
Sounds like if they used some of the Jaguar stuff, or at least the concept, it could help them a lot to get competitive with Intel again.
Thanks for the info. :)
Intel is spending tremendous amount of money to keep x86 alive, trying to scale down x86 year after year for performance and watts. Too bad they are caught up in greed that they will soon lose out to this ARM market. Pretty sure later on they will try to be a licensee of the HSA technology LOL
Reality Check from the Future: Intel didn't changed, it got even worse instead. Oh, and AMD came back with a base-drum to beat them.
Keller looks like an aged Kevin Sorbo.
amd zen is looking to be a beast!good job jim!
Legendary CPU Architect Jim Keller . bravo!!
THANK YOU TEAM LEADER AND CEO OF ZEN Suzzane Plummer
That’s my dad!!!......who works at Tesla now
He's a legend in my book. So proud to own a Ryzen CPU
I saw him on the Lex Fridman podcast. One of the best podcasts I've seen in a long time.
Your dad is an absolute legend in the computer industry.
You’re dad is awesome
allready saving up to get the new amd cpu/platform.
indeed, i even mailed AMD to get information on how can i invest into AMD.
i don't earn a lot of money, but i'm willing to put about 1K usd into AMD stocks, i don't care if it is lost money.
frankly, if i was AMD i would make a kickstarter like crowd founding for the next gen high perfomance cpu line..
Nagy Andras well there is a certain reason to b optimistic coz amd r only goin to get better from where they currently r bt u shud still b careful though ..
+Nagy Andras AMD just had a leaked benchmark that shows their new 8 core CPU doing very well. It's memory read speed is on par with Intels I7 6700K, The CPU hash is 3 times better than the I7 5820k.
minimonkeyplay
can you give me a link ?
i'd like to see the article.
thing is AMD on stock speed never made any sense for me :D the fun starts overclockt. why not get all the fun i payd for, right ?
minimonkeyplay
that is quite interesting, but i think its fake.
strange clockspeed, and memory timing, and allso strange chipset.
at least for now i think 3ghz clock is .. not quite what amd aims for.
but, q4 is not far ahead, will see what amd managed. and more interesting will be how well it takes overclocking.
since that is the main reason for amd, oc the hell out of it, and get a huge bank for small bucks.
Nagy Andras This is a brand new processor design that uses ARM and x86 ARM processors are generally clocked lower so I think 3Ghz is normal. Jim Keller has delivered products for AMD before that put them ahead of Intel before.
How many Jim Keller's are there? Just one. Unique as far as I can tell.
I would like to thank AMD for saving my bucks, not only for the price of their CPUs but also for the heat they generate. they warmed my house during cold winters, so no need for central heating
+Jimmy Reynolds So basically you had to shell out extra cash for aftermarket coolers... so extra cash spent .... joke nullified.
Gaurab Chatterjee no i didnt get any coolers. i enjoyed the heat so i didnt have to pay for central heating, the only downside is the performence though hh
Jimmy Reynolds Was the performance bad?
Gaurab Chatterjee yes. only windows explorer is on and the fans kick in
Jimmy Reynolds lel
Learning about arm leveraged in x86 at 7:30 -7:47; no wonder ryzen architecture is power efficient with the high clocks of x86!
Arm and x86 isa, have nothing in common, you cannot just copy-paste features of arm to x86
At 10:21. what is Skyrose? Skyross Skyros?
The ARM interconnect / fabric.
Emma Long Thanks for that
And after 3-4 years almost everybody start bying RyZen CPUs and AMD become a king in the market
The team of engineers that develop amd's zen core or microArchitecture, it had at least 50 members, am i right ?
so in contrast ...ZEN is actually a redesigned ARM and Orochi cores cpu ..so we know wat to expect in power delivery...there isnt actual talk of zen here just arm cpu's
Everybody who listens to this just got smarter... if by a tiny margin.
Interesting. I am also interested when AMD DDR4 motherboards will be released for the AM4 designs.
I really hope am4 will use an lga design instead of pga.
***** actually, lga allows is a sturdier design overall and allows for more pins. Amd uses it for its server boards.
Actually, lga is not an intel design. Not to mention the 10 cpu insertuon thing is bs. Have removed cpus far more than that
. About the current : even if true, it doesn't matter in an era when cpus use around a volt.
Lga allows for higher pin density, which means smaller packages.
Did i mention the times when people removed their coolers and the cpu stuck to it, breaking the pins in the process?
***** also, if it truly was a superior design, why the heck would amd use it for servers where stability and absolute performance is key?
***** forgot to mention the only reason amd uses pga ia because of cost
.. in Ashes of the Singularity running Directx 12 , my A10 7870k + Asus R9 390 8GB , 55.5 FPS 1080 High
blows away an Intel 8core + GTX 980 ti that gets about 44 FPS in the same test, costing $2000 more ?
AMD is about to rule the world of men
IT has more to do with the drivers working properly and nividia fucking over amd. Amd has always had fast stuff, now that mantle as morphed into vulkan, amd cards will always be faster than nividia. So fingers crossed the next gen will blow Nvidia and Intel out of the water. The underdog is always doing Cooler stuff. Don't forget amd built 64 bit, Intel still license that from amd !!!!
+Hanniffy Dinn it is not good that it and nvidia is blown out i just hope everything is 60 40 60 to amd 40 to it and nvid then we could get more good products
come back FX Steamroller 28nm or 22NM!!!
Keller is a real killer engineer
dream comes true
Jim "Certified Shit Wrecker" Keller pulled it off again!
Sadly since his second departure they're already experiencing delays with Zen. It's make or break time
there have been no delays
juggernautxtr It was to be out by Q4 2016, that slipped to Q1 2017 although now we now know it's Jan 2017. It is only a Q mind but it's a costly delay nonetheless.
pow1983
it was scheduled for release in 2017, there have been NO delays.
Hey AMD you dont fool me I remember bulldozer. You got me once never again.
Ryzen>Hammer
It was a double bluff apparently. They got you again.
But hope AMD doesn't overprice the Summit Ridge.
So you've been talking about this for years, when we gonna get it?
+Cestarian Inhabitant October 2016 sounds likely.
In q4 2016 the first Zen CPUs should come
2020
how about a dual core with ht and insane IPC and L2 cache. This way we don't have to worry about poorly optimized games.
alamrisa we've long ago hit the wall of diminishing returns on single threaded IPC. improving IPC radically just can't be done anymore without a core that's either far too large and/or far to power hungry.
The Countess what about better memory controllers? the ones we have now on AMD aren't good. High latency when accessing ram.
alamrisa the difference in memory latency between bulldozer and intel's i7's at the time wasn't that high.
the biggest latency increase came from the L3 which has a latency twice that of intel's CPU's at the time it was introduced, even at the higher clock frequencies bulldozer ran at.
i dont like intel, (monopoly abuse isn't something that's forgivable) but they did a good job on their L3 cache's. compact and very low latency. i hope AMD can steal some of of their idea's there.
The Countess Great insight, thanks for sharing. ;)
+The Countess stealing is not nice
will the new cpu be able to play Minecraft?
+James Sunderland yes on 360p low
no new cpu to play minecraft with 200 mods and 128 gigs of ram because why the hell not
He reminds me of George Thorogood.
Damn, once again Jim Keller Leaves AMD for good.
+AtiCrossfireX his job is done. keeping him is expensive
He left after 3 years. 3 years is enough to get the foundations down as well as most of the design itself. Jim left in September 2015 and it was rumored Zen taped out around end of 2015 beginning of 2016. 3 months difference-obviously that shows when Jim left Zen was basically done.
it's just too bad he left AMD for tesla. hopefully zen does really well and can carry AMD a while until either they come up with something better, or Jim comes back.
Well amd had no problem with jim leaving amd for tesla.
But will it go into Playstation???
+WarsunGames yes and xbox and nintendo nx to maybe
*****
Oh great.Because I didn't do research this time.Thanks :D
funny my athlon x4 750 is pwerful as some i7 s
You can tell Keller is sick and tired of x86 design and loves Arm design... It's no wonder he left for Samsung after finishing his tenor with AMD, especially since they delayed/canned the Arm-K12/Skybridge projects in favor of x86 Zen project.
+Doom2pro But he didn't leave for Samsung, he works at Tesla now.
+Nosh Nosher And yet when I made my post it was well known he was headed to Samsung... The Tesla rumor just popped up in the last hour or so.
Doom2pro It's not rumor, it's fact.
i hope that Zen will be something and not only new bulldozer - faildozer because it can be end of AMD on cpu-markets!! especially now when Intel release at market 14nm Skylake&Broadwell cpu-s and i5-6600k literrally piss fx 9590 in 95% of tasks &games at base clock 3,5 Ghz
Mr11ESSE111 You condescending fucker of AMD Athlon & R7 garbage where intel pisses over everything.
Now your saying Intel is better than AMD ???
You very stupid asswipe telling everyone AMD is better and now you change your stupid sawdust brain.
Why say Intel is overpriced when it clearly has better performance than any AMD junk....oh wait you own cheap AMD glorified junk that's nothing special.
ThePc Gamer you stupid fool without brain and without mighty Dacia Dokker 1,2 TcE 115hp in your wooden stupid garage ,mwahahah
so he went to TESLA?????? all is forgiven dude then! :)
When they start talking about arms and legs i don't understand shit :S
what's the point being interviewed by his own employee, challenging lol
Jim Keller has joined Tesla ..
bulldozer pile driver steamroller excavator
the ground work is done
among other improvements the high bandwidth memory will make the apu a neat gaming system
HSA full steam into the future
this guy gets abducted. single-handedly pushing cpu technology from both ends of the competition race? no way its not aliens :D
"Power efficient processors" HAHAHAHAHA
Jaguar is hyperbolically more power efficient than Ivy Bridge even though Ivy Bridge is 22nm and Jaguar is 28nm.
Emma Long lol I might be in the wrong video to comment that above statement but hell, as an internet user I just want to voice my disagreement with things and criticize all I want. You are though correct but as an individual who aint lookin for a bundled GPU and CPU together, AMD is clearly not my choice. toots to you.
Kyle G You're wrong about that as well. AMD still offers fantastic CPUs at and below the 150$ price point that frankly have absolutely no competition from intel.
You can choose to glorify a brand and be forced into the ignorant pack mentality but that will only lead us into another pentium 4 fiasco.
Kyle G If you don't want a bundled CPU and GPU together, your only option is Intel's LGA-2011 platform, which is nothing more than a line of over-priced gimped Xeon processors which start at $550+ for the hexacores. Why anyone would want to go to that platform just to get another quad-core with SMT enabled is beyond me.
This comment has not aged very well
Big loss for intel!
Unfortunately rather unconcrete high level story time avoiding to answer any details:-/
AMD you are done. you'd better move to mobile platforms like Qualcomm
Don't hope for that! I'm sure the crooks over at intel would gladly charge $1000 for an i5 with no competition...
+TAPS147 Not true... If AMD died anti monopoly laws would kick in and Intel would be split into two or more companies, and then we'd get multiple Intel's charging 1000 for an i5 :D
So yeah, I really hope Zen is good. Competition always benefits the customer.
+Tyler Weigand the anti monopoly laws wouldn't apply. They aren't the only ones able to make CPUs. They're just the ones who make the CPUs that everybody buys.
Eric Fahnestock They're the only ones that make consumer laptop and desktop CPUs besides AMD though.
Anyhow, we recently got a benchmark that indicates zen ipc is similar to Broadwell which in my eyes means... Competition! Sure, zen isn't gonna flat out beat Intel but it looks like it's at least gonna give them a run for their money.
Even in a true monopoly situation, at least in the x86-64 market, Intel couldn't charge $1000 for something like an i5 because no one would buy it. They can't just charge whatever they want and have people still buy. People already aren't buying at current prices.
Also, there are too many similar products these days for something like this to happen. A $1,000 mainstream processor would just encourage further investment into areas like smartphones, tablets, Chromebooks, and set top boxes. They aren't 1-to-1 substitutes now but that would quickly change in an environment where the competition increased prices by 400%.
I expect Zen to be just an overrated and overhyped just like phonom, bulldozer, kaverie, HSA or whatever crap they release
And Jim Keller is just one person. The success of Zen does not depend on one person, but the whole team.
maroom1 every single one of the things you mentioned we designed after keller left.
And keller might only be 1 person, but as lead architect he lays the foundation for everything else. the main things letting phenom en bulldozer down were the designs. one was far to conservative, and the other far to radical for the state of current software.
maroom1 zen will kick intel's ass for good !!
Sayan Sen
Thats what AMD fanboys always say. Same thing they said about phenom and bulldozer.
maroom1 yea n possibly before k7 / k8 when keller was there so i m finding a trend here ..
maroom1 Phenom was good, the 3 core and 6 core variants were good bang for buck CPUs and the quads were not far behind C2Q either. Don't be a fanboy, it's pointless and stupid.
Pff all talk and hype just like with faildozer. Get back to me when AMD actually makes something worth buying.
+Heinrich Berthold they already do .. you are not too observant ..
Really and tell me what would that be? In single thread performance they aren't close to the I5 or I7. In multi thread performance they easily get beaten by the I7 and Xeon. In the server field again the Xeon is better and out performs the Opteron. So tell me where is the great chip you talk of that is actually worth buying because as of now AMD is virtually non existent.
Heinrich Berthold up to 200$ they make great value for money hardware
+Heinrich Berthold Their video cards are pretty nice. Fury X is a beast. Much better than nVidia for DX12 games and cryptocurrency mining.
my athlon x4 750 is better than some i7
And the fucking traitor left amd once again( or so i read). He didn't even wait for the launch of the zen processor, and joined nvidia. We need AMD to become competitive because once they do that, intel will be forced to lower their prices, that's ofc if they don't have some spare designs on the shelves waiting for amd to make a move. What i expect though is to see some drops in the i5's current price tags.
+Radu Lupu he is no trailtor :P The design is done and he has joined Tesla .
He does this a lot and with a lot of companies, he's done this to Intel and AMD before as well Samsung, Apple, etc. business as usual, actually.
