One of the best games in the (admittedly small) Virtual Boy library, with a great soundtrack and some really cool wire-frame graphics. Don't be fooled by how it resembles Starfox: the similarities are pretty superficial.
NintendoComplete "cool" wire-frame graphics?? If anything, it takes away from the game. I can hardly play just because of that. They seriously released an UNFINISHED game!
@@austinmartin2927 are u playing it in 3D with the Virtual Boy or on some emulator? The effect an actual virtual boy offers would help determine depth in this game and make it easier to play I imagine. The wire frame idea is cool. It worked well in early arcade games.
LightBlue2222 I played it on an actual Virtual Boy. Since that first comment, I've played it several more times and still can't get over how unfinished the game looks. Sorry :/
@@austinmartin2927 gotchya. I haven't played. I appreciate the effort to bring 3D to the system. The idea is good for virtual reality. I suppose it's underpowered for that kinda game.
This brings back memories of when I was little. It feels like yesterday I was playing this game on my Virtual Boy. I wish I knew what I did with that console.
Played this today with the Virtualboy-Emulator on the Oculus Quest. Now works with the Quest standard controllers, that happen to have pretty much the same button layout as the Virtualboy-Controller. Great game in 3D.
It's funny I missed my Virtual Boy so much for many years that when I first got the original Oculus DK1 the very first thing I tried on it was VBJin with Oculus support and it did an amazing job replicating the experience. And now there is also an emulator for 3DS that supports 3D Virtual Boy games.
DANMAKUMAN VGM I mean, sure it is fun..... But LOOK AT IT! They released an UNFINISHED game! It could have been so much better if the thing actually had textures. And the virtual boy was more than capable of handling that!
Actually, the Virtual Boy had its technical limitations, which is why the game looks like this. If the console had better hardware, then its possible for Red Alarm to have textures and look more like a finished game.
I was a unversity student in the 90's, when the VB was released. I rented one and played "Teleroboxer" and the bowling game. It was an awesome attempt at 3D, but it wasn't attractive enough. But they kept at it, and succeeded with the 3DS. I wish they would have reissued these games, but maybe Nintendo didn't want to be reminded of this failure.
+Jeremy M I would've loved a sequel to Virtual Hydlide that kept the same style. Red Alarm 2 would've been awesome too, but I did like their golf games:)
dave4shmups I've read the same. In all honesty though, there weren't many games on it that gave me headaches. Usually the worst I ever got was really tired eyes from how bright and sharp the red LEDs were. I loved the look, but the heavy contrast really put on some strain sometimes :)
@@NintendoComplete I could agree with this :) I dove in to the Virtual Boy library blind, only glancing at covers to games and maybe a minute or two of video footage before deciding to pick a title up. The brightness adjustment doesn't actually get much publicity, though it definitely helped me a lot for Wario Land. That, and the instruction manuals I could find online (as I can only really just afford the carts as they are) really are pretty helpful in how to properly set up and adjust the unit altogether. Perhaps the console was just a bit too ahead of its time, and too new. But thankfully, we still got titles such as Red Alarm to enjoy! I was nine when Virtual Boy came out, and wanted one so badly. I'm so glad that I got the chance to pick up one fully functioning and complete for a great price. I'm very thankful to have only just the dry eyes from the visuals.
I remember playing the sample version of the red alarm game for Nintendo virtual boy when they had it back at the former Toys “R” Us toy stores all around the country, including Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, because I played the sample version of this device there and chances are I really liked it because everything is like red and whatsoeverbut I noticed the device was very expensive because the cartridges never came with it.
I can imagine a game like this with wireframe 3D graphics on SNES without Super FX chip... 8 bit NES had a game called "Elite" also in wireframe graphics.
I'd love to play this game again. ...it's kind of impossible to see what's happening in 2D though. Probably the only game where the depth perception was actually necessary to make it work.
Yeah it is difficult. But it is the only way I play the game. Nintendo wonders why the Virtual Boy failed ...... it is because they did not bring Virtual Reality, (with the exception of one or two games like this one). Instead, we got stupid games like pinball, tetris, puzzle games, original Mario bros with a slight 3D "Gimic." All those games should have been on Gameboy, NOT Virtual Boy. Wario Land and Jack Bros are incredible, but they too should have been on any other system. Red Alarm does the virtual reality and the 3D effect VERY well! Especially when you go to settings and turn the depth slider all the way up. These few games that were released actually did not use much at all of the processing power of the system. Honestly, if they tried, they could seriously have brought the original DOOM to this system. That would have been freaking awesome! and would have sold this system like crazy! Sorry for ranting, but the Virtual Boy could have been a REALLY good game system if Nintendo ACTUALLY ATTEMPTED what they advertised!! Virtual reality!
Does anyone else think that the ship you fly in red alarm looks a lot like the adf-01 falken from ace combat...? Im honestly wondering if namco got the concept for the ship from here
I wish this had a remake for 3DS. I has a very short argument once about that. "You can't do those kind of graphics with 3DS!" So I hopped them to Vector Racing. Now imagine Red Alarm with color vectors. In 3d.
Horrible.

Mod your 3DS and play it again! Looks phenomenal on there, as do all the VB library 😉

Really good game, that's why I own a Virtual Boy, just because of Red Alarm.

Red is my favorite color.
god I thought this was THE coolest thing in 1996.
You mean the coolest thing in 1995.
Fun Fact: the Booster item also counted as an extra hit point for your fighter.

Do you still happen to have your virtual boy by chance? Have you tried anything to fix it?
@@wyattsutton1363 I still have it. Haven’t tried fixing it myself.
My favorite company developed this game- if only didn't focus on GOLF GAMES, then MAYBE T&E Soft would still be in business.

2:01 HERE WE GO!
Red Alarm?
**Hell March intensifies**
I've read that if the mirrors (I think it's the mirrors) are properly adjusted in a Virtual Boy, that you won't get any headaches.

Did you know that this game was made by the same company that made Hydlide? I'm seriously not joking!
They also did about 5 million golf games.
Yes
I remember playing this game at 5am in the morning before going to my kindergarden class lol. Somehow beat it the game too :) great memories.
played this on the quest 2 with a virtual boy emulator. genuinely a fantastic game

TBH it was almost impossible to see what was happening in 3D, unless you'd played for hours already and had a vivid imagination.
Remember this game. Was awesome.
Honestly, the best way to play this game is in first-person mode.... Because isn't this supposed to be VIRTUAL REALITY???

That’s the only game of this system that I liked
I think it is related to ZAS a gb shmup also made by T&E SOFT,I heard most sfx are same in ZAS
T&E Soft the creators of Hydlide.
this game really sucked me in. had to play it a bit to get used to the wireframe graphics, nut by far the best game for VB
Ah yes, I've got a migraine again already! lol

It's not when you're playing with the Virtual Boy itself.

worth to try with real console
I came here cuz AVGN
