  • This video is a overview of the Pro 70 lavalier microphone from Audio Technica. It's a low to mid-budget microphone, not wireless, so you'll hopefully pay less than $150 for it. This isn't an overly technical review, with all kinds of lab-testing of audio recordings. I've just covered all the basics, and talked about lav mics in general. It has a reduced dynamic pickup range compared to any studio condenser microphone that you'd buy, at around 100 Hz to 14 kHz, but that's standard for a lavalier and you'll have pretty decent quality for whatever project you're working on.
I referred to a couple of audio files in the tutorial. Here's a download link to those files (plus a copy of "When I Grow Old") which is a free download. Right-click on this link to download a compressed folder in RAR format. If you don't know how to unpack a RAR archive, download WinRAR for windows, or if you have a Mac, get a program like Unarchiver or UnRarX or Rar Extractor or Rar Expander or Zipeg:

Unfortunately, as of early 2015, CZcams annotations are still not visible to all mobile viewers. I use annotations quite frequently to post clarifications and additional information during the video. For the best educational experience, you might prefer to watch this video in a desktop browser rather than on mobile, unless CZcams eventually fixes the mobile annotation deficiency.
On a side note, I get a lot of requests from people who want me to review their DJ mixes. Unfortunately, I am extremely busy. I'm already turning down paid projects, and I don't have time to review mixes. I wish it was otherwise.

About the frequency response part. The mic conveys frequencies between 100-14 000 Hz. The lowest string on an acoustic guitar is tuned to E2 which is 82.4 Hz. Should you wish to play drop D, 73.42 Hz.
This means that AT Pro 70 cannot reproduce the main frequencies of these notes but only the overtones. You might not notice the difference since your brain tends to psychologically add the missing sounds to complete the image, but once you experiment with the low notes, it becomes clear.
I would not use Pro 70 to mic a solo guitar or to record any guitar.

      Good comment, Madis.

That is not entirely right. Within the +3/-3dB range it is, but if you take a closer look at the frequency responce, you can see that this microphone picks up sounds as low as 40Hz, but in the 40Hz range it is 5dB under the 0dB line. This means that this microphone can reproduce all these frequencies, but if you want more lows, you gonna have to push them a bit (which does not mean it will be necessary, it all depends on the guitar, and only testing it on your guitar will tell the whole story)
Would I use this microphone for recording? There are certainly better options, but for live performance it certainly give more natural sound then a under saddle piezo or a magnetic soundhole pickup, but it is a bit more prone to feedback then these.

Thanks Jonathan, great balanced review and a good explanation of why someone would use a lav vs a LDC in many applications. My only beef with the Pro 70 is that the mic is hard-wired instead of the Hirose connector used on the AT wireless lavs. Even if it added $10-20 to the price it would be worth it to have interchangeable mics.

The guitar mouth clip came with the mic or did you buy it separately? If separately bought, can you still recall what brand made this model..?

That was a really annoying ending. I think most of us were interested in how the mic sounds, and then you ruin the whole thing at the end. So there is no point making the
    video at all.

This mic works fine with some DSLR's. It depends what they take for input - with some cameras you might need an adapter to get the signal into the camera.
