  • I know I'm jumping around with the video orders, but hey ho!
    Race two at Cadwell was a real storming bout!
    As we went out the rain started spitting down and the track was slick, but there wasn't any advantage to a wet line etc.......just suck it up and slither around.
    Steve got a cracking start and I never force a solid maneuver at the start as its just a high risk move for club racing. However, that meant faffing around behind steve looking for gaps and pulling up track limit warnings. My pace was faster but ultimately passing around cadwell is incredibly hard without making contact or taking to the grass, and well, I like steve so I'm not about to punt him off or make a pass unless its fairly clean haha.
    So, struggle on we did and I had eyed up a passing place through charlies which I thought was a good clear area to stick it up the inside as I had much more speed and could hold a tighter line to block pass into charlie 2.
    Unfortunately on the last lap as my best chance came, my throttle snapped just as I hit the inside curb and that was that..........what a bleeding annoying way to go out. I'd of taken second place and the points happily, but wasn't to be.
    Anyway, congrats to steve, he did a cracking job fending me off and covering all my attempts..........you did hog the middle of the road though, cheeky bugger.

    • @BenR22
      @BenR22  Před 5 lety +2

      Thanks man. The shift issue is the lock out solenoid not switched on, however my ecu was sealed so I cannot access it and turn it back on. Now that the season is done I won't have that issue anymore as I can turn the solenoid on haha.

    Great race! I notice how many times you comment about it being great to be so close with Steve etc, have you considered doing another one make series again like the Metro's where all the cars are tightly controlled so every race is really tight? Be great to see!

      @@BenR22 Ah, didn't realise it was that much of a leading question haha I suspect it might be the damage? Close racing means need to push to pass kind of thing like the old clios?

    • @BenR22
      @BenR22  Před 5 lety +1

      @@tcars01 not so much, damage and contact is a mindset and a poor one. If you absolutely have to do that dick move at low level motorsport where the driver most likely has to pay and it could well influence the rest of their season, then you aren't and never will be a winner. Sure contact happens, the small rub, the light tap that leaves a mark, it all happens when you're trying to get past if you are faster. It's very easy to descern if it was intentional or not, but the impossible part is proving it and convincing any officials that they should do anything out it. It'd an unchecked behavior and if there was a strict penalty system that was so over the top, then hopefully it would stop it happening as much. I mean, if you conscientiously decide to push to pass or make contact, then you aren't the driver you think you are. Putting pressure on someone is 100% legit, forcing them to make a mistake is a skill much harder to master. And this game is about skill, not do or die..... Not at this level.
      The other issue is blood lust from the crowd, they love a bit of argy bargy, because let's me honest, clean, fast, on the limit driving is pretty boring for a crowd to watch as they can't understand the nuances it takes
      If it's a factory or a big sponsor paying for damage, I'm more understanding, but club and low level national motorsport, its plain desperation if you do it.
      As for the other question.
      One make series..... Its a bit subjective. I'm not, despite what people may think, an adrenalin junkie. I'm not here for that chemical high. I'm here as a personal challenge to see just how good I am. If you're racing door to door, it's exciting, no doubt about it, and you end the race feeling great for the rest of the day....if you come out on top. However, look back on it later and personally, if I'm toe to toe with someone, and this is where the racers ego comes in, and I don't rate them as highly as other drivers..... Then being only fractionally faster than them does not put me head and shoulders above them, it's not great for confidence in my case. However, if you win a race by 5, 10, 30 seconds, you have stamped your dominance over everything.... There is no argument to have. Its a much better long term high and actually motivates you harder to push further than where you are sitting. You're not concentrating on the battle in hand, your focused on the battle you want to be in, with the next guy who's faster.
      Sounds horrible, but racing is such a mental game with oneself yet alone with other drivers. Just because you operate physically in club level, doesn't mean you can't elevate your mindset to operate at the level you want to be
      The next part with one make is that its equal..... Until you realise its not. Cheating is rife, it always happens as there is no real check systems. If you're in a one make series and you've been in 10th place for 2 years, do you suck it up and think I'm not good enough and work on yourself, or do you find that next 5bhp with a cheat that you think everyone else is doing? Again the racers ego doesn't very often allow the former to be the decision.
      Also, it's very hard to prove cheating, sometimes it costs money, and you akways come off looking like the bad guy who's whining. And if you're winning fair and beating someone who is cheating, God...... How do you look then?
      The series I'm in I like. The regs are open, and you're limited to bhp/ton. So effectively you cannot cheat...... You can try dupe the checks, but the cars can't be "illegal". When the cars don't have to be all one spec, then winning comes down to just how hard you're willing to work, learn and progress.
      Money, it comes into both classes..... Just because it's spec doesn't mean someone isn't throwing buckets of cash at new parts and tyres and brakes all the time to find that tiny edge.... And the ratio of return is incredibly small. In open class, you can spunk money, but play it smart and money doesn't win.
      All both cases, I'd say hard work and being clever beats money almost always. Any great drivers rise to success is hardly a story of them having an easy ride on a cheque book to the top. You still have to face those who want to win more than you want to.

      @@BenR22 I am sorry for the very late reply. I actually had fun re-watching your videos again and saw you had replied to me.
      I agree, a little rub here and there can sometimes be inevitable as it can be a mix of over defensive driving not just overly aggressive to pass but for a lot of club races they don't want to put their car in a position where it might not come out of it whereas for some the car is not a worry at all.
      I do see your side with regards to stamping your authority and a personal battle to win by 10 seconds etc but as you mention a skill game do you not wonder sometimes what if it was the car what if it was this and that, I guess the allure of single make is to try and alleviate cheque book racing and ideally the best driver comes out on top and so it is way more satisfying when you beat someone with identical equipment? You are definitely best to answer as you have done both one make and open class. I love the nuisance you get in open class racing with some cars better handling/some acceleration/some top end etc but i always felt the absolute buzz of beating people in the same machinery would top it but on the flip side like you mention there is ALWAYS someone cheating and if you aren't the lucky one to be winning you question everything. It's a tough one isn't it!
      Anyway, are you racing this year? Certainly getting withdrawal symptoms from your uploads hence the re-watches :)

    Awesome stuff man! I thought you were about to make a final passing attempt and then snap. Ah well that's racing lol. How would one get into this sort of racing series?

    • @BenR22
      @BenR22  Před 5 lety

      It's not too hard to get into racing, you just have to push through some initial obstacles, mostly financial. The first year is always one of the most expensive, get your licence, get your safety gear, get or build a race car, get some way to tow it to the track, tyres and consumables, entry fees, ub memberships. But once you get past all that it really is the greatest thing to do.

      @@BenR22 Thanks for the reply! I love watching your videos and it's inspired me to really try to get into it this year. What would be a good car to start with thats semi easy to convert to race car? Keep it up dude I have a feeling you will be huge!

    • @BenR22
      @BenR22  Před 5 lety

      Get your Ards test out the way, you can then apply for the licence whenever you're ready. But it's best to at least have that in hand.
      I'd seriously look at metros. Sure the front end is super competitive and costs can be high, but you can get by with a basic setup for very little money.Tyres last a season, sondo brakes and they use 10l of fuel per race, and are one of the best chassis to learn in. Or, do something like class c of hot hatch where the old stock hatch saxos rule to roost and you can pickup a race car for not much.
      It's hard to say, it takes some digging to find the best value as there are so many entry level championships.
