Florida flooding: 'Never in my mind would I have imagined it would be this bad'

- Unprecedented flooding has destroyed homes across Central Florida, the result of heavy rain dropped by Ian. In Seminole County, residents along the St. Johns River are wading through waist-high water inside their homes to collect belongings. In Osceola County, as the water recedes, residents are concerned about health issues related to the record floodwaters.

I left all my stuff. Didn’t think twice about my stuff. All I cared about was my life and not watching my pets drown or be traumatized. Screw stuff. I cannot understand being older and caring MORE about your stuff. Life is eternal.
Life is short bud, death is eternal.
Learned that as well after a b ca dx at 36. Woke me up as to what’s important in life.
I agree; never get too attached to stuff because it can be gone in an instant and it's not what is important.
I can't even imagine having to make that decision though.. but beautifully said💛
Good for your. Good decisions!
That lady is the only person who said she learned from a previous hurricane and raised her stuff. Then I hear she is going to rebuild and has no intention of leaving.
It’s not criticizing for paying attention to one’s surroundings and not putting everything you have into a flood zone with no means of fixing it when it floods…it’s call responsibility… yes things happen but.. when you know and you do it anyway… free will of choice… folks can’t seem to learn this lesson.
55+ communities is much cheaper in FLA she more than likely can't afford to live nowhere else so rebuilding makes the most sense
I get it it's there land
Poor gator was waiting hours to be rescued.

I see this and I make sure that I don't complain about the minimal damage we experienced.
This is so heartbreaking. My county got hid hard with a lot of rain and wind from Ian. I think we got between 20 and 25 inches of rain and it rained for 2 days. And the wind was bad as well with a lot of trees hitting homes. We are one of the lucky ones to not get flooded into our home as our townhouse is in a perfect spot. The water got right up to our porch and was close to flooding it. Some got almost 5 feet of water in their homes. Our Publix got flooded also.
All our natural barriers here in the Caribbean is gone ; to much sandmining
This is unbelievably heartbreaking. I cannot even comprehend what you are all dealing with. My heart goes out to all impacted. We are praying for you.
My prayers for the flooding...
Lived through this with Hurricane Harvey. Five feet in our house. The just basic clean up, is still weeks away. They will need help after all the focus is gone. You can’t wrap your mind around this unless you have lived it. Any help is appreciated to a level you can’t imagine.
Poor people, everything they own is gone ruined.Sad thing is it will happen again just like wild fires in California every year.😔
Most California wildfires are in the forests not inhabited by many people except those running away from everything and don’t cause much property damage. If you live where you can’t get insurance you’re looking for trouble.
@@MaryLopez-em3rc - In 2021, 1,968,326 acres burned, and 3,050 structures were damaged or destroyed. When you compare these numbers to 2013 - when 601,635 acres burned, and 456 structures were damaged or destroyed - you can start to see the problem.

Rebuilding is ridiculous.
Those without flood insurance are really going to be having a horrible time… FEEMA said they may only cover up to $10-20k to help but if they lost their house they’re SOL :(
First the insurance agents will have to verify that you int intentionally didn't cause this hurricane and that you had a home there 🤣,and if approved will have to wait for your check to clear by severals months💸👀🐊
These insurance companies are going to pull out of Florida that state is going to be a money pit
FEMA is YOU and ME not some "magic bank" in the sky with endless dollars. People need to get it together and realize the RISKS they are taking when living in coastal areas - be it Florida, Georgia, etc. The same is true for those living in high-risk fire danger areas. No one can "bail you out". IF you decide to live in one of the areas you need to be prepared psychologically and financially. These are CHOICES and in the case of the elderly and those who have sunk all their money in "paradise" may end up in pretty dire straits.

So the area was flooded for 45 days before and they still chose to rebuild and stay in the area? Not sure I understand why and how on earth will any insurance company write a flood policy in this area?
I think if the area has been labeled a flood plain then they can get flood insurance from the government.
They get flood insurance paid for by the rest of the country through FEMA. Our tax dollars go to Floridians who just keep rebuilding because they aren’t paying for it.
Nearly half of Florida's Homes were built in a Flood Zone . But to find out if your Home is in one ? It just takes a Hurricane such as Ian for you to find out . It's unfortunate , but Ian will not be the last Cat 4 to hit Florida .
They are building like crazy here in Florida; it is not paradise all the time, this is what we live with. I hope everyone who moves here has done thier home work.

@@sunnyromano6862 I think it's insane to buy property in Florida. Not exactly a long-term investment.
Pinellas County has a website detailing the level of flood zone for anyone's property. During Irma , I sealed all vital papers in the dishwasher. snakes - alligators - hello people
Pretty sure that they warned everyone that it would be unsurviveable in places and really REALLY bad in others. Did nobody see the size of Ian and not realize just how big and powerful he was gonna be?
To be honest some of us didn't have enough time to evacuate. I work for the school district and we had to work on Monday. They didn't make a decision to cancel school until the afternoon. I left Tuesday mid-day but it was already raining and the weather was not good. I went back to my place to find that everything has been destroyed and nothing was save including one of my car. I am grateful for life but I wish they gave people more time to evacuate.
I know It was such a slow moving storm .
Some don't have the money to evacuate or the transportation; many are disabled and can not do it alone but are alone. Some have to stay like hospital and EMS workers. Some where not even in an evacuated area and the storm quickly changed course and now they are stuck, bridges close after 45 mph winds. Many were not even hit hard by the storm itself but now the massive flooding that no one could have predicted.
@@merciliabrice2511 i am so sorry.
No, Ron DeSantis told them the immigrants were the cause of flooding because to many were in the same place making that area in Florida sink and he did nothing to stop it. Now these people are screwed for life and some will make out like bandits.

If everything in the house is under water than there’s really nothing to go back for, the waters damaged it all. & yea that sucks! GREAT a gator on a log is just what they need now on top of everything else! It’s like having a sewer dumpster fire dropping on top of ur house w a gator on top of it!
I’m familiar with this area, would drive around daydreaming of building a home there one day. I always thought if I ever did build, I would raise the entire lot 6ft above ground, and have the house sitting another 6 ft above that. This area got some decent flooding during 2004 Charlie Francis etc. so I’m not sure what they were thing building at ground level in a swamp.
Considering the water raised 4 feet, and I would ideally be 12ft above that water level before it came into the house…🧐
I wouldn't say it's a swamp, but all the water from east central Florida headed there.
BLESS everyone may GOD be with you
The frequency of cat4 and cat5 hurricanes has double in period of 2001-2022 compared to period of 1951-2000. And is nearly 4x higher than the period of 1900-1925.
Climate change as so many Floridians continue to deny is real. Hurricanes also have lulls and peaks. The 1940's - 1960's was a relatively quiet period and now were are in a phase of more storms. Rebuild accordingly.
Not according to NOAA. Storms are no more powerful now than they were 100 years ago. Go look at the data for hurricane Ian released this week. Hurricane Andrew was far more devastating in life and property than Ian was. Just pure fact.
@@kennixox262 .. No one denies climate change , the climate has constantly been changing since the beginning of time .

Since satellite coverage in the 1970s, where all hurricanes could be tracked, there has been NO increase in hurricane frequency or severity.

So devastating … 💔
Very very sad for these people it's even more sad that their homes and structures were allowed to be built there in the first place without raising the ground in the event of tragedies just like this. There's really no excuse for zoning and planning as well as code enforcement as well as Dot to have allowed this in the first place Florida has known for a long time that storms and hurricanes as well as storm surge like this can happen because we have seen it time and time again in low-lying areas. As much as I would love to see a lot of these homes rebuilt for these people I think some of these areas need to be designated as no build zones. State of Florida and the federal government should be compensating these people so that they can move somewhere else that is built right to begin with on Higher Ground including proper drainage and runoff. Unfortunately the real problem is if they are allowed to rebuild with the ground level the way it is it'll just happen again sometime in the future perhaps even more devastating. Many people forget that many areas of Florida were once swamp some areas were even Lakes. Homes that are built along shorelines and Beach access areas should have automatically been built to hire ground standards zoning should have made this a code requirement. Especially when we see brand new homes being built on low ground to this day. Frankly there is just no more excuses for it knowing what can happen and what has already happened. After all what good is any code requirement if it does not serve for the protection of the people. ? It definitely should be a requirement for the longevity of their structures and the land that the structures sit on. To make matters worse there are even some parts of Florida that it just has to literally drizzle and the ground is already saturated and filling with water. Take areas like Port St Lucie West large huge development called. Traditions that's a relatively new development of thousands of homes that are built on ground that is simply way too low and that ground is even inland. Those homes are built on ground that is just a disaster waiting to happen. You can't even walk in between most of those homes without walking in mud even on a sunny day. Very poor drainage systems homes built way below the ground level that they should have been built. And with low code requirements some of those homes are even made out of Styrofoam and fiberboard. Leaving them vulnerable even to low wind. And also leaving them extremely vulnerable to flooding. Unfortunately code enforcement and Zoning departments throughout the whole entire state of Florida have allowed many areas of Florida to be built this way not just in the past but in the present as well. Too many people have lost their lives in this one hurricane alone. Not to mention all the other hurricanes in the past of Florida for Florida not to learn from its horrible mistakes. This should be an inspiration to the entire state to build better stronger and required structures to be built on Higher Ground from here forward in addition with proper drainage and runoff systems. Such as lakes that are deep enough to hold excess flooding Waters canals and waterways built to divert the water without backing up and flooding the areas.
But if we humans don’t learn to live with Mother Nature she will take back what Is natural as it’s supposed to be… our humans ego thinks we just can come in and make that square fit in the round hole! She’s showing us who is really in control…when I buy a home I see where the water is where I naturally runs if it’s in a flood plane do research. Folks just think cause Joe’s doing it it’s ok and they have to I up him, so they hock everything and the good old boy system of who knows who and who paid off who gets things handled. Had people continued to tell me it is better to just do what you want and then beg for forgiveness than to try do it the right way…. Well some lessons are much harder to learn than others for some folks… common sense tells me I will drive over to the beach and enjoy it the go back home away from its wrath…at least I have a better chance at not washing away.
Folks need to except responsibility for their choices and their actions not the governments responsibility to baby sit! Nor do I want them baby sitting me!!!!!
@@marlowenapier286 well of course you have the right to refuse any assistance you even have the right to build the house yourself if you can get the pass through the permit board. Or if you want to build your home off site somewhere off grid where you don't even have to get a permit. However people that go through the normal permit process rely on the government and things like code enforcement to make sure that their home or structure is built to proper code. Zoning is also responsible for making sure that the land is at a proper height and if it is not at a proper height it must be listed as a flood zone area many areas of Florida that were affected were not in a flood zone area according to zoning therefore they do not have flood insurance. The government and the people that run the government through voting make up the government policies just like buildings in California have to be built to earthquake standards. Whereas in the past in California buildings could be built conventionally without any kind of reinforcement or proofing for earthquake resistance. Many people in California have lost their lives because their homes were made out of loose-built bricks that literally crumbled causing the structure to collapse. Through tragedy and earthquakes it was decided to change those codes and to have new structures built to earthquake resistance just like they should be building homes in Florida to Hurricane resistance and flood resistance by putting those homes on Higher Ground or having fill dirt brought in when a new home is built especially when you're talking entire neighborhoods. That again are relying on the government to give them accurate reliable information on their home site. That is why the government should be responsible for these people's loss because it is the government through zoning that allowed these structures to be built in the fashion that they were built and in low-lying areas. But not even bothering to classify them as low lying areas. When a new home is bought and it is financed through a bank it is mandatory that the home have insurance on it if it is considered a flood zone it is mandatory that the home be required to carry flood insurance. However it takes the zoning department to classify it as a flood prone area. It is up for code enforcement to give the certification whether or not the home can be built below flood-prone areas. Code should be making sure that the homes are built at the proper height or that proper fill dirt is brought in so that the home can be built on Higher Ground along with proper drainage systems So that in the event of a flood such as a hurricane or storm or title surge the home is not completely flooded out. The death toll count is already well over a hundred in Florida because water literally Rose above and beyond the roofs of many structures. Because the people were under the impression that their home was safe when in fact it was not. Therefore they should not be held responsible for the damages being that is the government that secured the process of paperwork in order for that home to be built on the land that it was built on in the first place. There's a thing in law called gross criminal negligence. And that's exactly what code enforcement and the zoning department and the government should be charged for. And again that is why they should be reimbursing these people to have their homes rebuilt either on the same plot of land but have the ground raised or have their new home be built somewhere else on higher ground up to proper building code. Such as enforcing a code that requires the home to be built to a category 4 code requirement or even a category 5. This is already happening in places of Miami and the Panhandle but it took hurricanes and horrible storms to have these measures put in place in government through the process of code Code Enforcement and zoning.

I DON'T BELIEVE THAT WATER IS GOING ANYWHERE SOON WITH THE RISING SEA LEVEL HAPPENING AT THE SAME TIME. What a disaster!!
Smart thing to do is find an old pontoon boat and just park it in the back
Amen
Sewage issue - once you gut the house you simply spray a high bleach mix on the wood to remove the mold and raw sewage. If your tile floors were done correctly you will not have to remove them but all wood will need to be sprayed. You also need to spray the breaker panel to remove the corrosive if you suffered a salt water impact. Heck salt water might require the entire house to electrical system replaced. Fresh water shouldn't be that big of a problem. This is what we had to do for Katrina and home is still in top shape after the forced Katrina makeover
Regardless of how well you clean up the nails rust inside of the walls . And the wood rots even with fresh water flooding. How many floods can a house go through before it collapses ?
@@harrybriscoe7948 this is completely false. We had 6ft of flooding during Katrina and I had 4ft of flood from 2016 flood event. You do not have to replace the wood unless it’s rot or shows sign of rot. The contractors sprayed the lumber to remove any sewage and mold then rebuilt my home. Both homes are still very solid today many years after the flooding
Anyone that says the wood has to be replaced is looking to rip off the homeowner. My contractor is ranked highest in my state without any complaints. Pretty hard to beat that!
Also they ran these machines to get all the moisture out of the house and lumber. Basically baked the house for a few days. The home that flooded in 2016 was said they got nearly 100 gallons of water out of the 1900sqft house
