My dad was a Niner fan from the West Coast who raised my brother and I in Upstate NY (Buffalo). I was a Jets fan which didn't bother my dad but he never forgave my big brother for becoming a Giants fan! I don't think he spoke to my brother for two days after that playoff game in 1986 lol My dad and brother are gone now but I have such warm memories of those games and how they brought out so much passion in our family. You're right, looking back that was a really wonderful era of sports and such a great rivalry! I remember the year the Giants won their second SB in 1990, they played the Niners twice, once on Monday night and then in the playoffs. The Giants were so gritty and well-coached and that Niner defense was historically underrated...they didn't give up one touchdown in either game against the eventual champs.
When Rice caught that pass over the middle and took it to the 20 yard line with 59 seconds left, that was one of the best sports calls by the announcer ever.

Watching that drive in real time was so nerve racking I still remember it. The Cincinatti Bengals were the only AFC team to seriously challenge the powerful 49ers 80s juggernaut/dynasty. The 49ers earned both wins over the Bengals. That just goes to show how good Cincinatti's 2 SB teams actually were. I think that they will beat the L.A. Rams and win their first SB on February 13th.
Out of all the Super Bowls, I have to say that this one is the best. It wasn't the closest (Super Bowl 25) but in this we got to see the GOAT lead his team down the length of the field in crunch time. Kind of odd, the Bengals of all teams were the only ones to give Montana's 49ers a scare. Anderson's Bengals did a good job but Esiason's Bengals almost pulled off the upset. In Super Bowl XIX, everyone was going on and on about Marino but in the end, the Dolphins couldn't pull it off and when Montana faced off against Elway, that was a true masterpiece performance by Montana. Had he not came out in the 4th and had Seifert not called off the dogs, I'm betting San Fran could have put up over 70 on Denver......there was no team that could have defeated that 49ers team that day, no one.

Wasn't it interesting how intense Sam Wyche was throughout most of the game, but how subdued he was during the 49ers' final game-winning drive? It was almost as if he sensed Joe Montana was not going to be stopped.
Because of things like 13:30 I believe in the football gods. "But at the Bengals 10-yard line Montana threw what could have been his costliest pass of the game". Nowadays we see Montana as a guy whose TD/Int ratio in Super Bowls is 11/0 and who was flawless in big games. Other examples of "how could that possibly happen?" were David Tyree's helmet catch in Super Bowl XLII and Robert Alford's dropped interception turned into Julian Edelman's unlikely catch in Super Bowl LI.

Like most Bengal fans, I was very disappointed when this game ended. To make matters worse, Cincinnati could have HAD Jerry Rice with the 13th pick in the 1985 NFL Draft. However, the Bengals decided to take receiver Eddie Brown with this pick while San Francisco took Jerry Rice just three picks later. I am sure that Cincinnati would have won this Super Bowl if Rice had been playing for the Bengals!
I thought when Sam went to Tampa Bay Buccaneers to become head coach he would turn them into Cincinnati Bengals but it didn't work out their way at all he didn't have the grit athletic ability at quarterback

I saw this game live. I've seen the highlights 100 times. I actually still get excited watching that drive the Niners put together.

Like most Bengal fans, I was very disappointed when this game ended. To make matters worse, Cincinnati could have HAD Jerry Rice with the 13th pick in the 1985 NFL Draft. However, the Bengals decided to take receiver Eddie Brown with this pick while San Francisco took Jerry Rice just three picks later. I am sure that Cincinnati would have won this Super Bowl if Rice had been playing for the Bengals!
