- My 55 Gallon L134 Leopard Frog Pleco breeding project. I have 8 plecos total in my group. I am considering adding 1-2 more. This tank has been up and running for about 4 months. L134’s only reach 4-4.3” in size but have personalities many times larger. They are an omnivorous Pleco and require some meaty proteins in their diet. L134’s come Brazil and are found in the Rio Tapajós and Rio Jamanxim.

What plants do you put in the tank?
Your setup is good. I bred wild Peckoltia compt a for several years.(Many old posts on planetcatfish.com under username "apistomaster"). I also bred my F1's. In my experience they can begin breeding between 20 to 24 months. At first I used mostly TO water but I eventually found that my tap water was fine. That water was about 340 ppm with a of of 7.4 and temperature was kept at 84* F. I was among the first to popularize the use of earthworm sticks. Other than the sticks the were fed live black worms and frozen blood worms. I produced about 200 each year from a group of two males and three females. I always had a colony of cherry shrimp sharing the 20 gallon long breeding tank. The shrimp that died of old age were good dietary supplements.😁 Good luck with your project.
Larry Waybright I’ve read many of your posts. You’re a legend on Planet Catfish. Thanks for the tips. I love my L134’s and know this is a marathon, not a sprint. Thank you for your feedback. Respectfully, Tom
larry ive read all your posts about 134 o pc when i was a newbie. always good info, old forums are amazing since you can track down things from many years ago.
They breed yet?
What are the differences between sexes?
55 gallon tank dimensions please
Hi Tom, Nice setup, was thinking of doing something similar with Zebra place's. I'm also thinking about discus, how come you gave them up, were they too much work or you just wanted to try something different. I have 6 tanks full of african cichlids and looking to get into some softer water fish. I have high PH very hard water and i'm trying to figure out the best way to get soft water.
I got out of discus for a couple reasons. First, it was consuming a lot of my time with manual 50% daily water changes. Second, I had an equipment failure that resulted in a few loses. Finally, my tank had corner seal fail so Ali tore the tank down and got rd of all remaining fish. Didn’t replace it with a new 120 Gal for several months. My goal, of successful with L134’s, is to try a colony of L046’s Zebra.
JW Collect if you’re concerned about hard water for Discus don’t be. My PH, KH and GH are all off the charts yet I keep healthy happy Discus. Consistent, clean water is key. I do bag up peat moss pellets and use Malaysian driftwood to bring it down some naturally. You won’t get optimum growth but you can certainly keep these fish.
Mike Schmidt Thank you, I've heard that from a lot of people including Discus Hans. Not only do I want to keep them I want them to thrive and breed. I also want to keep and breed Zebra pleco's. I've been keeping hard water fish for a long time and want to branch out to soft water fish. Thanks
Hi Tom where are you getting your black/earthworm sticks from and brand if you can share? I have L236 that are almost ready to start breeding.

Thx! Love your channel and content. I’m a new subscriber and I’m trying to get through all your vids! It’s like I’m binge-watching a Netflix series. Making up for lost time.
My l134 , they're seemed to like eating algae than meat base food.
How are they doing now? I just bought four juveniles.
Wichita Falls Fishkeeper They are all doing great. I’m surprised how much the juvies have grown. They love earthworm pellets, bloodworms, and Repashy. What size are your 134’s?
I wish my LFS would sell L134's. Where would you suggest I source some online? New subscriber. Thanks
Wichita Falls Fishkeeper Can your LFS special order them for you? If you have a local fish club with a message board, you could post that you’re looking for L134’s. Otherwise, I know Freshwater Exotics in WI has some for $65 ea. Thanks for stopping by.
TM Aquatics where do you buy your earthworm pellets?

Hi Tom, question.
What do you use for your quarantine process on your wild caught L134’s?
Medications?
Time in quarantine?
Thanks in advance.
+Steve Parker I always QT wild caught 4-6 weeks. I give them a couple days to settle in and start eating, then I treat with Levamisole. I usually follow up with an anti Parasite like Ich-X, and finally Prazi. If their poo looks suspicious (clear or stringy), I’ll hit them again with levamisole. If other signs appear (fungus, bacteria, etc) I will treat with appropriate meds like General Cure, erythromycin, etc. I monitor and observe my QT fish very closely.
Hi Tom. Can you share your source for Levamisole?
