  • 👀 SPOILERS for the entire series, you've been warned!
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is the BEST Terminator adaptation set to film. There could be better stuff in the comics, etc. but I haven't read them as of yet.
And stop blindly saying T2 is TEH BESTEST TERMINATOR1! It's good, but chillax...
The Terminator franchise is a broken mess of hot garbage, but there IS a light at the end of the tunnel.

Great video going over this underrated show. The Sarah Connor Chronicles in my opinion is the best Terminator sequel to follow T2. A show that felt true to the essence of what made Terminator. It honored the past while also exploring new things within the mythos. It's a shame we didn't get to see a third season.

The thing that always struck me about TSCC, was I always had it in my head the notion a really good Terminator sequel would have been *A* future Skynet realizing Judgment Day was a strategic error, but acknowledging the inevitability of its own creation thanks to bootstrapping itself into existence, sending a Terminator into the past to manipulate the circumstances of its own creation to avert Judgment Day.
Then TSCC comes out and the eleventh hour revelations about a cyborg resistance play out, just close enough to finally make me happy about the direction the franchise was going after T2...and it gets Foxed. Because of course it did.

That's the thing, in the comics, Skynet eventually reached a point where the war was just going to go on and on forever and that it eventually sought peace with John, but some other bad actors tried to stop peace between the two, and none of the films ever tried exploring what the tv show and comics tried, it's just so weird (or more the directors/writers of the films are too stubborn to realise that some slight complex stories are fine for audiences).

Thank you so much for this man! I haven't rewatched this show since it ended, but this really brought back the memories. It is really the best expansion of Terminator lore outside of the first two movies. You could tell they really respected Cameron's work, but at the same time they weren't afraid to explore deeper topics that a tv series can give you. They knew they couldn't compete directly with the originals in terms of big spectacle action (something the later films tried to do and failed), so they went with more engaging character development and suspense. Absolute shame it was cancelled before it finished its main plots.
Best thing about this series is how memorial so many scenes are. Terminator in a classroom, Terminator eating for first time on screen, complete infiltration (like posing as a parent) etc... And of course any of the implied romance scenes between John and Cameron, showing how (just like in T2) a machine can truly make a bond relationship with a human. Especially the scene were Cameron, while attempting to kill John, uses the "I love you and you love me" approach.
As the video showed, Cameron mentioned there is a deep urge to kill John. But T2 clearly showed a machine can develop near true emotions/empathy (understanding) in the end. So does Cameron also love John back? Question I've always asked, but will never know answer.

Thanks so much for this analysis. It's very unfortunate that there wasn't and likely will never be a continuation to this series made in the same vein with the same caliber. But it's fun to speculate what might have been with the way that the show sets up each character's stories for the future.
Although I believe the writing in this show was excellent, I don't feel it is fair to necessarily place it above T1 and T2 writing as far as time travel logic goes. Those movies had an approach to time travel where you could apply the slinky version. I think it was the CZcams channel OneTake that did an analysis. It's actually quite sound writing that makes more sense when you view those movies in this lens, even in light of the paradoxes.
P.S. I love the Danny Elfman parts in this video. Those were great!

Granted, I knew about the cliffhanger before I'd ever watched the series, but I've never been particularly bothered by the open-ended conclusion. For one thing, they get to that point by everyone reaching a significant development in their character growth, so it's satisfying on that level. Additionally it's easy to read the ending as saying, "After all the stress and heartache the knowledge of his future has caused John, he is finally free to make his own path." Granted, given how we'd started to see him grow into Future John throughout Season 2, he's still likely to step into a leadership position anyway, but this time it'll be entirely his decision.

Finally a video that reviews and brings attention to this awesome series. The only other good one I've seen is JoBlo's.
Each character is flawed, three-dimensional and interesting. They make sense, no matter if they're antagonists or protagonists.
It explored so much interesting concepts but still respected the first 2 films. As most, Cameron's character is my favorite, but like the others, she plays off of the others, their dynamics make this happen.
One of my favorite scenes is Summer's beautiful ballet routine and the scene's multi-level implications: There is absolutely no logical, computational reason for a machine whose job is to protect John Connor, to be dancing ballet by herself, alone in her own room. It serves zero tactical purpose. It is only a frivolous waste of power cell energy. The implication is therefore that she is doing it because she wants to. Because she likes it. The implications of that are enormous. Especially in light of Sarah's preceding monologue about them not being able to perform art and culture, because otherwise they BECOME humanity. it's made even better by Derek being the one to see her dancing: John probably would have been impressed, and Sarah probably would have thought it strange. But Derek has seen first hand the destruction that Skynet and the Terminators have wrought, living in a shattered world, and always seeing them as instruments of destruction (and thus always giving Cameron short shrift). So for him to see her doing something beautiful and creative disturbs him on a primal level, and he doesn't know what to think. And you can see that on his face at the end there.

And agreed - obviously the scene exists because she does ballet IRL, but carrying over the trait to a killing machine highlights some interesting aspects of her development.

What I loved about the show is that it was character driven while also exploring a fight being fought in so many timelines that not even Skynet could possibly know the outcome of all time travels. Instead of playing it cheap like so many time travel stories, SCC showed that if time travel is possible, then it's actually impossible to track down an original timeline to root for, because any timeline is already compromised, the grandfather paraxod is out of the discussion and everything is possible moments before the event horizon of Judgment Day... even the date itself of Judgement Day.

The Sarah Connor Chronciles tv show is definitely THE best form of post T2 sequel :), it indeed explores so many interesting things, the season 2 also having glimpses of the future war which I loved! (the Salvation film was one attempt at depicting the Future War which fell kind of flat and certainly was not there yet, the flashforwards in original movie and T2 and older John looking badass overseeing the battlefield...well Salvation wasn't there yet :) but the tv show actually hinted at many amazing ideas and possibilities in the future and actually managed to believably show a teenage John GROWING into the role of the savior of humankind and great military leader! Plus the motif of temporal war between human resistance and machines sending back both terminators and human fighters to rig the future in their favor was interesting.

Damn, that was great!
There are very few scenes like that in T2, but *THE TERMINATOR* and “The Sarah Connor Chronicles” are consistently hitting us in the gut - “I love you too, sweetheart” and Jessie killing Riley, for instance - without needing to pull any strings. T2 is a YA movie.

Great video! I personally love T3. The only thing i honestly think its got wrong is that it was way funnier than it should've been, it needed a darker tone. Salvation had the the right tone but the story became a mess by trying to fit too much into a single film, but still enjoyable/tolerable. I could've easily turned that film into another trilogy, and close the saga. Genysis (whatever) and Dark Fate are absolute trash, the later being the worst offender I'm my opinion. The Sarah Connor Chronicles was just epic, far better than the last 3 films put together. It even acknowledges T3 and bring the story closer to how the first film is and even surpasses T2 in relevant drama. You mentioned the infiltration aspects and functions of Terminators, that was established in the fist film, so I always considered it a mistake to cast Arnold again in T2 and T3.

    • @workingmemories2213

T3 was a celebration of excess/parody of the franchise... the tone was definitely intentional. Salvation had a great look and tone, apart from the need to identify new Terminators by shouting them out. It was supposed to spawn a trilogy... womp womp.
Arnie was miscast from a conceptual standpoint... but no one can argue the impression he left on the franchise (for better or worse). He was larger than life, like a robo-killer should be., but they should have made room for other actors.

There is no way I can see them making a trilogy when all the material was already crammed in the damn film. they really screwed up. The fact that the T-800 in T2 essentially became the perfect father for John, was probably a more terrifying prospect it attempting to kill him or herself.
She likely saw the potential harm, both to him psychologically and his leadership, if John develops too much empathy and attachment to these literal killing machines.
She's not wrong either, as you stated, he would eventually routinely employ the use of reprogramed Terminators and isolate himself from the Human's in the resistance.
Many of them likely would have slaughtered fellow resistance fighters, their friends, family and community's.
No wonder a fair portion of the resistance didn't much care for John by then.
The really sad part is to a degree, Sarah would be right to be terrified of John becoming so invested in the Terminators.
Given the machine resistances existence, to another degree, John's empathy towards them would probably be the deciding factor of the potential alliance.
Consequently, it would also be the deciding factor in victory or defeat by extension.

I remember hearing about Josh returning to Terminator and I thought that we would get something that answered some of the questions raised from the TSCC series. NOPE! If they were to answer those story plot points instead of trying to outshine the original Terminators, I think we would get a MUCH better movie. It would be nice to see a movie where the machines win, but then we find out, they did not want to, or it wasn't the machines that started it all like every movie tells you. Who wouldn't want to see that movie!!!

There are 2 confusing things I noticed in TSCC
One is I thought the war is already over since the beginning of T1 so after skynet lost it sent a T800 and T1000 to change the timeline
Two is in TSCC turns out the war is still happening so why both the resistance and skynet send soldiers and terminators to the past

    • @workingmemories2213
      @workingmemories2213  Před rokem +1

      Super easy, barely an inconvenience.
Note: James Cameron constructed the story using a 'wormhole' style of time travel, but I don't see it the same way. I'm not certain that events can be changed as much as branching paths are created... in my understanding, there are infinite variations on a theme, therefore the entire thing is a branching tree of alternate timelines.
α Timeline; the John Connor of this timeline smashes the Skynet defense grid and they lose the war.
β Timeline begins when Skynet sends an infiltrator to chance the past. Notable changes:
      1. A Terminator is destroyed in the past and its parts are acquired by Cyberdyne and later reverse-engineered
      2. Kyle Reese impregnates Sarah and becomes the new father to John Connor (I do not believe he was the father of α John Connor)
This timeline is thought be be corrected by the end of T1, but alas...
γ Timeline is created when Miles Dyson reverse engineers the leftover pieces of future tech. The Skynet of this timeline sends a more advanced prototype (T-1000) to stop John Connor (as they would have been aware that a T-800 was insufficient previously... and they would have only come to this conclusion when it figured out how it came to be). The resistance ups the ante, sends a reprogrammed Terminator and they succeed. All physical traces are destroyed, thus ending this conflict.
      ... T:TSCC Starts here
δ Timeline begins when Cyberdyne intern Andy Goode develops "The Turk," which later becomes online and does the thing. The date for Judgement day is different than T2 because it's a different set of circumstances. Note: No date for Judgement Day is provided in the first film). Andy approves a mission whereby Derek Reese is sent back to terminate him to ensure the Turk doesn't develop. He succeeds... but Skynet prevails YET AGAIN.
ε Timeline (and or ζ Timeline) Skynet sends Charles Fischer back in time and has him install itself as a backdoor Trojan using his younger self's credentials... this young pup of a Skynet seeks out whatever knowledge it can and discovers John Henry... Cameron provides John with her CPU and he heads to a possible future to do lord knows what.
This is likely the timeline where John doesn't exist/hasn't been born etc. ... this is probably where Season 3 would have lived. I say it's one of two timelines, as Jesse and Derek are from different timelines meeting together in a past that isn't theirs.
In my mind there are infinite iterations of the same thing going on and on ad nauseum. Dark Fate's notion of 'Legion' just being another intelligence lends credence to this theory. Dark Fate doesn't make sense for many, many other reasons, though... maybe I'll dunk on that more in a later vid? Who knows.
Basically; all the timelines are valid because they are all branching paths that exist when certain decisions are made.

Might I suggest if you haven't, please do watch Longmire then Justified [original series] in that order. Tall task but some of the best shows on television if not the best television ever. I say one before the other because Longmire is an older protagonist with a very different style. Justified's Raylan Givens has a very high speed, low drag, calm cool collected but ready to erupt swagger. That might make Longmire seem undeservedly anticlimactic.

While the original film is essentially a 80's slasher flick with a sci fi twist, the series can be read as an allegory about motherhood, raising children and biblical creation which is what makes it so good. It relates to a real human experience and explores it in depth. The characters become something to study rather than just devices to move the plot forward. Many of the episodes don't focus on the main plot at all and just focus on the characters.
It's proof there are good writers in Hollywood if they are given the chance/money to write and produce original content. This show came a few years too early and missed the streaming revolution. It probably could have had a few more seasons otherwise. The ending seems rushed, but I thought they wrapped it up well. And I don't think the show could have continued in the future. It's heart and soul was the characters and splitting them up would not have worked.
If you liked SCC, check out Continuum. It's also a great sci fi show.

I think you’re right about the show potentially benefitting from streaming… it eventually got the time slot of death if I’m not mistaken. The ending was definitely rushed; they knew they were being cancelled with enough time to wrap some stuff up and then tease what would never come 😭
Splitting the characters up wouldn’t have lasted terribly long I don’t think; but John did need time away from mommy and Cameron in order to grow.
Continuum looks neat, and my girlfriend would probably love another show to binge; I’ll try and grab that tonight 👍

I loved that he wasn’t a “new Terminator,” but an iteration meant to lure John in; it’s fairly clever. And the fact he wasn’t aware is 💯.
He would have healed, no doubt… he was supposed to be a re-skinned John Connor after Connor dies, which would make “John Connor” and undying idea (like Batman), and it would also give the human resistance the edge they need when fighting advanced AI.
Audiences didn’t like that idea, so instead we just got more Bale rewrites 😒
I also LOVE the way the film was processed; it gave the film an entirely different look; very “Children of Men.” In interviews for Genisys, Arnie talked about how Salvation “sucked”… oh, the irony 😜😝

@@user-tp5yb4hr4w Movies/shows are written to appeal to as many as possible… which means whatever intentions the show-runners have gets watered down when too many cooks are in the kitchen. The by-product is a show that appeals to no one.
They still are writing great games/shows/movies - but they aren’t the AAA titles in the forefront (generally speaking). If you’re looking for depth in the annual release games such as Assassin’s Creed or Call of Duty, ya might be disappointed 😂
Nearly all sci fi has attached social/political issues head on and I think the key, like you said, is subtlety. I’m fine with political messages or otherwise as long as it’s either subtle, or clever. Heck - when the world gets bad some people need to be clubbed over the head before it’s too late for change. What I don’t like is when messaging is so weak it’s pointless.
For example, there was a fairly recent episode of Doctor Who where they meet Rosa Parks. The message of the episode was simply “racism is bad.” Which is true, but that’s as far as it went - the writing was incredibly shallow and it didn’t teach us anything we weren’t aware of already.

The first season they had an idea and went with it. The second season you could see an idea but then they kind of got lost trying to make it into a complete season.
Evil did that in season 1. It starts with a good idea and story. It basically goes nowhere in the middle, and then it finds itself again in the last few.
