Rick Barry's form is the most natural and basic form of throwing an object that big to a point that high. It was an art form. And it worked like a charm.

The granny shot is the easiest to make. Most NBA players are too embarrassed to use it though. Kind of silly because they should value results over pride.

What do you mean "somehow better". It's not really that confusing as to why his shot worked. It's a consistent, fluid, natural, and effortless motion compared to the rest of the shooters who have fucked up mechanics and would shoot 100 different ways on 100 different free throws.....

Cole Aldridge's was really not that bad I think. Like bigger guys struggle to compensate for the arc they need to hit to make the swish, him putting the ball behind his head I think was what was helping him compensate for that. Besides the initial behind the head, the rest of the rest looks pretty clean for a big man to me haha.

Not really. The granny shot you're thinking of is more of a throw. Rick Barry flicks the ball in with his wrists. His technique is fluid, strong, consistent and, above all, very teachable.
Rick Barry is not a good shooter with a bad shot in the same vain as Shawn Marion or Larry Bird. Those people can never teach people to shoot like they do. Barry's got his form down to a science.

How do we remove Rick Barry from this video? The dude was a legend, and he shoots better than most overhand. Plus, however strange the shot looked, it's much more simple and effective than the normal shot. When Wilt tried it for a year, the dude averaged 61% (compared to a previous 51%), on a shot he had never tried before. 28 of his hundred points came from the granny shot.

Rick Barry's underhanded free throw was so accurate and simple that players who shot poorly overhand should've tried switching to it.

I really hate Don Nelson free throw while I like Rick Barry and it's 100% effective to me.
There are many of these which are weird but effective. Almost all of those are smooth and have good balance and coordination, like Wilkes, Aldrige, and Marion. The bad ones are herky-jerky. Nelson and Michael Adams are the only 2 that are jerky but still pretty effective. The bad ones also tended to always be changing, Shaq and Wilt being the prime examples. Wilkes was weird and silky-smooth, grooving that same motion for decades.

I played Varsity all four years. My freshman year, I played point guard. I shot 11% for the first six games. It was horrible. My coach told me I owed him one mile for every free throw missed, and he taught me granny style. I got up to 78% by the end of the year, with the first six games counting against my final percentage.

Rick Barry's free throw was actually the norm back in the early days of the NBA along with the set shot. Don Nelson's free throw was about the same as Bob Cousy's set shot.

Kale Brantley his form isn't horrible because it's a good technique to make free throws. Try shooting it yourself and you will understand why. The underhand shot is more soft than a overhead shot so it's more likely to go in.

3:17 improving Noahs free throws: his hand is on the side of the basketball, his palm is facing away from the hoop as he's going up, he has to correct it last second. He might want to try moving his hand to the top of the ball to allow his palm to go underneath. If he DOES move his hand to the top of the ball, lock the wrist early that way it doesn't cause a 2 motion jumper. He's shooting with 2 hands which is causing side spin. Might want to try relaxing the guide hand on the side of the basketball, ITS JUST THERE FORR SUPPORT. the guide hand fingers fall off as the wrist goes forward. set point timing. Might want to try syncing with the ball, when the ball goes down, hips go down, ball goes up, hips go up nice and fluid on toes as he gets to set point.

Rick Barry has a beautiful underhand form that gets perfect backspin on the ball which will make it die on the rim instead of bouncing off which makes it more likely to fall in the basket.
Some of these are truly nasty looking, but if you’re dropping near 80% or by some miracle over 90% then I guess it really doesn’t matter. The physics of the Rick Barry style granny shot suggest it’s actually a more consistent shot, hence why he retired with the all time career free throw percentage.
