  • The Shepard-class served with distinction during the war with the Klingon Empire in 2257 and one if its line was the USS Gagarin. In the Lore of Star Trek Online, Yard 39 saw the reintroduction of these ships and their conversion into ones suitable for the 25th century.
Then Star Trek Picard added them to the canon in 2401 so let's analysis and breakdown this ship and its lore.

I just realized while thinking of the Disco era ships in Pic S1 that they kinda make sense. Those ships are only meant to be evacuation vessel's nothing more, nothing less. We are never told the exact number of ships lost in the Dominion War or even the Battle of Sector 001 for that matter. I could see Picard and La Forge issuing orders to pull older ships out of moth ball yards to build up the evacuation fleet for Romulus and honestly I think its the only way that the rest of Starfleet and the UFP would agree to help the Romulans, send old out of date ships that are being put back in service by the synths on Mars so resources and man power isn't being taken away from rebuilding the actual fleet and attempting to get it back to pre Dominion War numbers.

I have...at least one of the variants of this ship in ST:O. Got it as the reward for the first ever event I completed while playing the game. It now serves as the Tier 6 ship for my main character on my account, who I complete events with and such.
I really love the appearance of the vessel. It's a very sleek design, that gives a fast attack ship vibe. And being a battlecruiser means I've got a ship that takes a bit more of a beating then some of the escort and pilot vessels my other characters use, but can move better and hit harder then the cruisers other characters have. While I certainly have other ships I really like, I'll always come back to my USS Constellation.

It would be interesting to heard what the writers think would be the differences between the Archer/Cochrane" Nacelle and the Eaves/Beyer Nacelle. I would imagine the Eaves/Beyer being much more durable and easier to repair. And despite the dearth of actual development, the Eaves/Beyer is not lacking for speed, top speed and probably acceleration.
As vast and varied as the universe SHOULD be, that seemingly everyone uses Warp for FTL, and apparently uses the same type and configuration of Warp drive seems like some huge mass of [not thinking] on the part of the writers. This alternate version of the "classic" warp design, like "Radial Flux" versus "Axial Flux" Motors (feel free to look that up) is a welcome addition to the universe.

That was the number of the original Sheppard class USS Gagarin that was destroyed early in season 1 of Discovery. All STO/Picard era Gagarin class ships have their numbers above NCC-97000.

Sadly, the people answering directly to Klutzman (and writing Picard and STD specifically) don't seem to have the creativity or foresight to incorperate the Yard 39 storyline, the fact that they used a copy/paste fleet at all is proof of that. To be brutally honest, the concept for the Spore Drive in STD COULD have worked, story and lore wise, and certainly canon wise, IF STD had been set in the early/mid 25th century, instead of parralel to/pre-TOS, which would have avoided the canon-breaking introduction of Spock's fake sister (he never had one) and a literal _Jump Drive_ before Starfleet even started developing the excelcior class (there is also the issue of STD's writers forgetting how real world physics relating to sound and the vaccuum space work, but that's another whole barrel of fish). Hell, the concept of the Protostar only works because of where it sits in the Trek Timeline, if that had been set pre-TNG era, then it would have been just as much of a mess as STD.

The kinds of shows that make the kind of buzz you are talking about burn hot and fast and then are quickly replaced with the next trend meanwhile trek remains popular and talked about even if it never reaches those heights and inevitably those lows.
