    This is why you don't poke the hornet's nest that is Starfleet. They are quite happy to be an exploration-focused space force with enough armament to be defensive. Push them too hard though and they can and will make some of the most devastating warships ever seen.

But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon."

    Starfleet obviously needs a historical course about Naval Peacekeeping. Having vessels that have parity with or slight superiority over the most probable threat axis doesn't start wars. It prevents them.
    The most challenging part of that is to be credible, but without precipitating an arms race.

    I did have to chuckle at the nomenclature here, 'fast' battlecruiser. Maybe it makes sense within the lore as it exists in the game. Though when looking at the capital ships ST likes to take inspiration of one kind or another from and, well, there are battlecruisers and fast battleships, but no fast battlecruisers. Due to the fact that battlecruisers were already what happens when you try to make a contemporary battleship design go faster, by sacrificing armor and firepower.
    (Fast battleships were created to do the same thing, but without sacrificing the protection or firepower to the extent a battlecruiser did. E.g. compare the Iowa class to the proposed Montana class.)

    Beautiful starship, looks like the Excelsior era version of the Constution era Miranda-class, the mid-end "standard cruiser class" to the high-end "premiere cruiser class" that was the Constitution and Excelsior. Wish Disco and SNW in art design had gone thus route of exciting creativity within existing visual canon. Being a "warship" makes sense, but breaks canon a bit as the Defiant is called Starfleet's first warship, but still it fits well otherwise into canon. I think that the additional ventral strut to attach mission pods would allow it to ablely carry out scientific or logistical missions as needed, providing a bit of bureaucratic stealth to its primary defense mission.

  • @casbot71
    @casbot71 Před 2 lety +5

    Starfleet would have been well served by creating pure combat variants of their standard ships of the line _and_ by creating a counterpart to the small Klingon Bird of Prey to use as a patrol craft, like the Archer class that Triangulum studios did a few months back.
    Have the 30 -40 crewman cheap to mass produce attack ship be part of the standard class niches that Starfleet repeats every starship generation, like the Constitution style main ship (Excelsior, Ambassador, Galaxy, Sovereign ect) and the Miranda style ship, a pure science vessel and so on.
    In the time of DS9 it's role would be resurrected by the Defiant class, and the Saber class.
    It would be controversial, but could be explained away by being designated a systems/sector defence patrol craft, providing security with the least investment of crew possible. And it's a defensive ship, not a offensive one, as it's short range (but just happens to be capable of accompanying a battle fleet in a long range incursion if supported by other ships…).
    As for the pure combat variants of their main multirole ships, that's a very efficient and effective use of pre existing designs, and a useful political tool for deterrence, as rival powers will always be wary of attacking a Federation captial ship in case it's a dedicated killer and not a exploratory cruiser.
    And Federation politicians may be less apprehensive as the fleet _looks_ like it's multirole ships. If the conversion between multirole ship and battlewagon is relatively simple Starfleet could even retrofit ships as suggested by current tensions - a neighbour getting aggressive or a permanent wormhole opens up, start converting ships to War specifications.
    And the logistics benifits is that Starfleet can utilise one optimised hull design for two different mission types.
    It's the dream of modularity.

    • @catoblepasomega
      @catoblepasomega Před 2 lety +3

      I believe the ship that fit that niche was largely the Miranda. It's well built for combat roles with a compact frame (more internal volume than a Connie, despite its size), with forward and aft double torpedo launchers and heavy phaser cannons mounted on the rollbar, perfect for engaging ships on all sides and for combating ships that might sneak up on you (like cloaked Klingon ships). The rollbar can be swapped out for a number of other options too, like phaser turrets, additional sensors, cargo pods etc and some were refitted with a hull extension to increase hanger space. It's a very versatile spaceframe that seems like it was designed to be refitted to fit just about any role, but whose stock configuration seems very combat-oriented.

    • @Tullaryx
      @Tullaryx Před 2 lety +2

      @@catoblepasomega That was actually implemented during the Dominion War to disastrous results. Even when manned by a skeleton combat crew the ships themselves were obsolete against the more modern ships of the Jem'Hadar, Cardassian and Breen fleets.

    • @catoblepasomega
      @catoblepasomega Před 2 lety +1

      @@Tullaryx Yeah, what was a cutting edge gunboat design 100 years later just doesn't pass muster during the Dominion war. No longer sturdy enough to stand in a slugging fight, and with a level of firepower no longer particularly notable. What might very well have been originally designed to fight Klingon B'rels is suddenly fills much the same role as one, but without a cloaking device, a crew size ten times as big, in a more expensive package. I wonder what could have been if it had undergone a modernization process like the Lakota did-upgrade its launchers to fire quantums, and its phaser cannons to something more modern like the defiant had, greater automatization like the Dominion-war galaxy's had, some better SIF and shield systems, it might be able to continue serving in its intended role. The fact that it was still in service while its contemporaries like the connie and constellation were retired says something in its favor, at least. Even modern stuff was getting massacred against the Dominion though, so who knows.

    Georgiou's death at the Battle of the Binary was covered up, remember? Mirror Georgiou even replaced her for a while.
    Whatever lead to this ship being named Georgiou, it was *not* her death at the hands of the Klingons. Because that officially never happened. I assume the official story is that she died on Discovery, but *that* would be stupidly classified, too.

    • @BluegrassGeek
      @BluegrassGeek Před 2 lety +5

      That's just it, Mirror Georgiou's appearance on the U.S.S. Discovery would've been entirely classified to the people on-board that vessel, Section 31, and Starfleet Command's highest ranking members. Then she vanished with the Discovery. So as far as the rest of Starfleet is concerned, Captain Georgiou died during the Battle of the Binary Stars. Which is the truth. Only Discovery's crew were lied to.

    Interesting.
    I'm not sure I buy the Klingons agreeing to limit their warfighting capabilites when the Romulans are their neighbors. But I'm sure it makes sense in story.
    It sounds like this is designed to oporate not as part of a line, but out in front of it or guarding against flanking manuvers. Having significant arms pointing aft means that unless you have significant enemies behind you, they're useless.

    So since this is cannon, does that mean the centaur class is the little sibling ship of this class? This means that even the traditionals in starfleet liked this design and didn't really wanna scrap the look. Or is the centaur older I can't remember when it was built

    • @3Rayfire
      @3Rayfire Před 2 lety +1

      I feel like the Centaur class was a means of producing short range patrol vessels, ships meant to operate inside the Federation utilizing the materials and frames of the Excelsior class. Similar to how the Miranda and Constitution and Galaxy and Nebula are clearly related and come from the same tech tree.

      So take the real-life battlecruiser as an analogy, Repulse/Excelsior is Hood/Incomparable with traditional design philosophy, and the Georigiou with later Shenzhou and Gagarin are more like G3/I3 battlecruisers with more radical unconventional design?

    Treaties that limit Tonnage of ships are absolutely mindless and stupid to the Nth degree. Yes lets hamper each other while a 3rd party not limited to our treaty walks all over us before we can build anything that matches their ships...
    treaties like these promote aggressive actions against non treaty parties to prevent them from over taking your fleet because you put silly restrictions on yourself.
    either that or you already top dog and know of every single possible threat to your position.
