- So, the time not being on Facebook, other social media, and online in general has really been enjoyable. It's hard not to become toxic, when the majority of the interwebz is super toxic. I'm not back on the fb train, but I finally recorded something I've wanted to foreva', so it's time for a new Quarantine Jam!
Whenever I make a playlist for whatever I'm doing, this song is always on it! It's just a great song! This might be on Matt Howery's playlist as well...🤘😉🤘
I'm gonna commit a bass guitar cardinal sin. The amazing bassist who played this originally, Tony Butler, played this with a pick. I'm a finger player, but I've got mad love and respect for all the bassists out there that are great with a pick! I'm working on it. The hardest part has been finding picks that feel right. I'll get there with my pick playing, but it's gonna be a minute. This song is a textbook example of how each individual part is fantastic, but it's not until you put them all together that each part makes total sense! It's some brilliant writing!
Signal chain is-
-Dingwall ABZ 4/3(standard tuning)
-Cali76 Compressor
-Spaceman Saturn VI
-Damnation Audio MBD2
-Bergantino Forte HP
Trying to find some interesting trivia about the band/song. Not easy. The band is considered Scottish, but the rhythm section(Butler & Brzezicki)is actually English, and they came to the band together. The guitarist, although from Scotland, was actually born in Canada. The only, true Scot in the band was the lead singer! Tony Butler played bass on a couple of my fave tunes, Let My Love Open The Door(Pete Townshend) & Back On The Chain Gang(The Pretenders). Mark Brzezicki played drums on the 1985 album Love, by The Cult, which included the hit She Sells Sanctuary.
I left in a couple of screwups, just for posterity.
The Song is In A Big Country by Big Country

Great cover! In actual fact, Stuart Adamson, the Big Country lead vocalist, guitarist, song writer and all-round musical genius was in fact born in Manchester, England, but grew up in Dunfermline, Scotland. So, none of the band are truly Scottish, but they are Scottish icons and legends.
Always turn to this when I am at rock bottom.
Wow. Came here after watching the wasteland video. This is a great old song that I still rock. 80’s anthem. Very underrated, under appreciated. Well done sir.
I so appreciate the kind words, thank you!
Brilliant. Tony Butler is one of my favourite bass players, and it's nice see him getting some recognition. BTW, although raised in Scotland, Big Country's singer was actually born in England (Manchester)
Til he was 4, think we can consider him scottish. Great cover 🤘
Yes he wasn’t born in Scotland but both his parents were Scottish and they moved back to Scotland when Stuart was very young. My nephew was born in Berlin his father is English his mother Northern Irish they only lived there for no more than 2 years does than mean my nephew is German?😀😀😀
Stuart referred to himself as a Manc
Awesome bass cover here! Great chops. You nailed the tone and sound nicely.
*_BIG COUNTRY RULES..._* R.I.P. Stuart Adamson
I thought that pain and truth were things that really mattered, and the first 59 seconds of this song were the only part of the song that really mattered.
Woah man! You got excellent monster tone! Tony Butler for sure would be proud of such a wonderful cover!
I loved this rocking song in the 80's . Thankyou for highlighting the bass playing that I never tuned into. Extra pleasure after all these years .
Brilliant. I would say a nod of approval from Tony
Thank you! He'd probably shake his head at my jacked up ending, lol! Much appreciated!
Bravo 👏
Such a great song!
My God. That is a superb cover. I really like how you seem to love the song, too.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I really appreciate it. Yeah, this song has been on every playlist I've ever created, LOL! I really wish I hadn't jacked up the ending, but, that was the cleanest play through I'd managed until the end...LMAO!
I've been looking for this my whole life. Thank you for sharing your gift and this wonderful song.
Great cover!! This is my favorite song of all time. I never get tired of hearing it. Reminds of all the good times I had as a teenager in the 80’s. Thanks for the tune!
Thanks for the kind words! I appreciate it! This is one my all-time faves, and always will be!
Fabulous work my friend!
Great cover, with an obvious love of the music (not just the bass). Respect.
Thank you! Much appreciated! Indeed, much love for the music...;-)!
Thanks for making beautiful music to make the world a better place - you are so right, it needs it right now. Magnifique!
I really appreciate the kind words! Gonna try to add stuff a bit more regularly. Take care and stay happy!
This is awesome! I am trying to learn this song on bass and found this. Classic tune and you seem to really enjoying playing it!
Thank you! I appreciate the kind words. Hopefully, I helped a bit. Obviously, I triggered a couple of folks by not using a pick, but the spirit of the song is fully there. You got this!
@@pbass6811 Man you crushed it! I'm not even close to this! I like especially that little run you do with the chorus. Thanks for sharing this!
Wow - brilliant - great job
Fantastic! Thanks for this. Love seeing how it sounds with finger playing vs. pick.
This is BRILLIANT!! WOW 👏 Well done. Thank you!
Brilliant!
Holy hell! This is so good!! I live for the bass guitar in songs, man. Thanks for the vid. You killed it!
Thank you so much! I appreciate it! I keep saying it, but I'm really going to be putting up more vids. Stay tuned!
Your enthusiasm!
Great stuff
Awesome
Very Nice Tony!
Thank you for this!
Beautiful!! You nail that chorus slide (actually the entire song!!). I had to listen to that isolated CZcams track for about an hour, slowing the speed down to figure out what he was doing with that slide. I heard a few versions online that just didn't sound right to me. Tony Butler just writes the catchiest bass lines!!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the kind words! Tony is a MONSTER bassist! I wasn't shocked to find out he was the one who played bass on "Let My Love Open The Door", by Pete Townshend, it's a great bass part. As far as the chorus slide goes, I listened to it a bunch of times, figured out, what I think, is the easiest way to play it, and went with that. Then I watched a bunch of vids, and nobody does it that way, LOL! I'm not going to shift positions if it's not necessary. Same notes, without the shift, LOL! Thanks again!
This is one of my favourite 80s tunes, and you did a splendid job!
Beautiful bass. Left hand absolutely spot on, brilliant. But right hand... that's magnificent! I love it, cheers
Thank you! I really appreciate that! Cheers to you, my friend!
Amazing job, and bass!
Loved watching ! thanx for posting...
I'd like to hear you do Flame of the West.
Boss!!!!
Super 80s song , the best or at least in the top three, the bass line is fantastic and the best video on utube is the one of them in Moscow 1988, their bass player wears black leather and is jumping around the stage playing that awesome bass line. This is a superb bass cover, nice tone and a great looking bass although I don’t know the brand of bass
Thank you, kindly! I appreciate the kind words! The bass is a Dingwall ABZ 4/3. Thanks again!
02:02 no, there Tony Butler it jumps the strings like jazz or funky
incredible!
Sick axe, my man.
Thanks! Much appreciated! I do love my Dingwalls!
Cool cover! Also, nice bass!
Thanks! I do LOVE this bass! Much appreciated!
My god, that bass is gorgeous. Also appreciate how you have fun with these covers, a lot of the ones coming out recently, the players are too stiff and focused on perfect execution to have any fun with it!
Superb
Keep the awesome covers coming! Truly enjoy watching and seeing how much fun you're having! \m/
Thank you! I really do enjoy this, it's a great way to relieve some stress. I'm gonna try to add vids more consistently. I hope you'll enjoy! Thanks again!
this is spot on mate!
Straight 🔥🔥🔥!
Thank you! I appreciate the kind words...😉
@@pbass6811 you inspire me to practice a little longer each day!👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
👍
Thanks - that was epic!
great job.....btw. my favourite pick is the jim dunlop .88 mm
killer bass and player you are ,but what kind of rig are you using and that bass?
Thanks for the kind words! I really appreciate it! I'm playing my Dingwall ABZ 4/3 in standard tuning. The signal chain was bass->Cali76 Compact Bass Compressor->Spaceman Effects Saturn VI OD->Damnation Audio MBD-2->Bergantino Forte HP amp(D.I.)->Zoom H6 recorder mounted to a Canon 80d DSLR. Rendered in iMovie. That's the rig, cheers!
Damn fine playing my brother from another mother. I bet Tony Butler is proud that there are very talented folks out there! Hey can you cover bass on lips like sugar by Echo and the Bunnymen?
Thanks, my friend! I appreciate the kind words. I'll take a listen to it, thanks for the suggestion!
you kick ass dude
Would love to see you do Wonderland, Tony has a vid on youtube. One of the most melodic bass lines ever.
tony butler is such a bad ass. i liked all the stuff he did with pretenders as well, although so sad how Pete Farndon ended up. great cover, bro. check mine out if you want. just starting to post a few
It is you, Mr. Tony Butler? :D
I wish! LOL!
Great job.although not the hardest big country bass.try flame of the west
Get a pick. As Tony did.
No, thanks. I'll do it my way. Cheers.
I am a lifelong BC fan and friend of the band from Dunfermline and em, unlike everyone else here it seems I have to tell you that categorically WAS NOT THE BASS LINE TO IABC. Tony plays with a pick first of all. Second, it just wasn't right, that wasn't what Tony plays you were far too busy. I have been listening to this song multiple times a week FOR FORTY YEARS now and this wasn't it. If you learned this from a tab, the tab was nonsense, sorry.
Cool. Thanks for this. I used it to learn Tony's bass part to cut my own cover. I just finished the main mix, but I will do another mix without bass for players to jam with ... czcams.com/video/TEatHJ45S8w/video.html
Wow! What a great video, my dude! That was seriously awesome! Well played, sir!🤘😆🤘
Bit premature there,stay on bass.brilliant.
That is an XLNT observation, lol! Much appreciated!
Get on them drums.
Terrible tone. Use a friggin' pick!!
