41:11 Empire Strikes Back, with Luke on the way to Dagobah sitting in his X-Wing cockpit, we see the text of what Artoo is "saying" come up on the screen so Luke can read it. Sentients can't speak binary; on Dagobah Luke mostly intuits what Artoo is saying, but he doesn't _know_ for sure. (Ex: "If you're saying coming here was a bad idea, I'm beginning to agree with you.") However, at the -36:20- mark after the leaving Hoth, Artoo questions the course Luke laid in, and the text comes up on a screen in his cockpit. It isn't an alphabet *we* can read, not in Aurebesh (which was the Imperial alphabet before it became the alphabet for the entire galaxy), but Luke is clearly reading it as his eyes drop to the screen on his control panel to read what is being said.
Somehow, EVERYONE missed this, and because Luke talked back to the droid without being able to really know what he is saying, this had led to the misunderstanding that everyone just understands astromechs; we see Mando speaking to R5 as if he knows what the droid is saying, and ofc there is Hera and Chopper (though I'd argue Chopper actually _speaks_ instead of just beeping and whistling; there are times when it's very clear what his meaning is). The truth of the matter is that when he isn't sitting in his cockpit with Artoo plugged in to his socket, Luke is just guessing at Artoo's meaning the same way we do with when "talking" with our dogs and cats.
So it's critical that pilots have to be able to read to know what their droids are saying about shield strength and other ships' systems. Look at the control panel of the X-Wing; there are no pictogram displays there. Even when Luke is nearing Dagobah, he's reading info about lifesign readings; in the first film when he's got his targeting computer up, we see text on that screen as well.
In Return of the Jedi is when we get *actual Aurebesh letters* and THIS is where that whole alphabet stems from, on a screen on Vader's SSD when the Rebels are trying to sneak past the blockade.
And then there is Coruscant in the prequels, and all those those lit signs with LETTERING on them to advertise establishments.
We never see anyone reading for fun, catching up on the news?? At what point has anyone in these films had the time for that. The prequels have Padme and Co. running for their lives, fleeing Naboo to get to Coruscant and start prepping for a Senate appearance, and in the meantime Qui-Gon is fighting off a Sith and cheating at dice to get Anakin into a race, and then the race happens, and then it's off to Coruscant, and then we jump forward to when they are there...George isn't showing us the characters' downtime. I guess maybe if he'd shown a pregnant Padme reading novels instead of dreamily brushing her hair--sure, there was a spot there to do it. But come on...the galaxy is illiterate? Just because there are non-human races in the galaxy doesn't mean that they don't have written languages/alphabets/syllabaries of their own. I just don't buy this one.

Interesting that the Rakata were higher than the Rule of Two.
Since these Icebergs are usually "well-known" to "obscure", I'd thought the Rakata would be at best around the middle since I'd wager a sizeable number of Star Wars fans don't know about 'em in the first place, unlike the Rule of Two.

    • @VaultLore
      @VaultLore  Před 4 měsíci +1

Could be, it’s always going to be a little subjective I think. I have a general order, but there’s so much lore it’s hard to know what’s obscure and what isn’t sometimes.
Also Star Wars fans have been around a longer than I’ve been alive, so I’m not not going to have the same order someone that’s been watching for 35 years would.

A mixture of "lore" "theories" and "canon vs. legends (especially without differentiating most times)" makes this video just feel like it doesn't know what it wants to be. It has some cool information in it, but why in the world would the Padme's death theory be in the lowest category?

As a linked fact, my brother a couple of days ago brought home and gifted me two additions to my action figure collection - one is the Black Series (6 inch humans) Luke and Grogu (Book of Boba Fett), and the other is the Vintage Series (3.75 inch, for humans) double pack of Wicket and Kneesaa (that being a light grey female Ewok of the show).

The most common way to bleed a Kyber crystal is that the force user takes for example a blue Kyber crystal and puts all of his rage, hate and anger into the crystal (almost like they make the crystal angry) and it turns red, this can also be done the other way around, a Jedi can take a red crystal and "purify" it by putting their good intentions, peace and focus into the crystal making it white. That is how Ashoka got her white lightsabers, by defeating a inqisitor and taking his crystals and purifying them.

Droids need a memory wipe because over time they have a very high chance to become erratic and unstable. Just like if you don't system restore your computer once in a while after high use downloading, installing, surfing, watching movies, playing games etc.
R2 is the rare exception. Oh and speaking of Astromech Droids. R2 and others can do a lot because they are the top of the line in Droids. Astromech Droids to a Translator Droid is equivalent in comparison to a Smart Phone (basically a handheld computer) to a Translator Device.
And they don't get wiped because of "sentience." They can't get sentience, it might seem like it, but they don't. They're only expressing their combined knowledge. It's all data at the end of the day and most the time that data conflicts. Which causes the instability leading to a data wipe.
I hope this helps in understanding this part of the berg. Been a fan for nearly 30 years, got a huge collection, was part of Star Wars Book Club in the 90's. Had access to rare books and info. So I'm not giving my personal belief on the subject as an fyi.

Kyber crystals are usually chosen by a Padawan during their training and come naturally from planets with deep connections to the force. The reason sith have red lightsabers is because (at least in new canon during the Imperial era) the kyber crystals were taken for use in the Death Star laser, and those lightsabers have a synthetic kyber crystal in them which is also imbued with dark force energy. Course that’s just one explanation…main one is cuz having all the bad guys carry red lightsabers is a visually distinct way to show who is who in battle.

33:10 My personal take on the force having limits is that it doesn’t, it’s the user. For example Tràkata is form a lightsaber combat in (legends) that is focused on turning off and on a lightsaber to get an advantage. This form of lightsaber combat was frowned upon the Jedi and the Sith. The sith deemed it as weak and the jedi deemed it as unsportsmanlike. The same could be said with the force. The jedi would not want to be unsportsmanlike and the sith would not want to be considered weak for using the easy route. They really could just rip the other person apart if they wanted to and weren’t subjected by moral core. But thats just my personal theory on your question. (Edit) Another theory i have is that the force could be preventing you getting ripped apart in a battle. In Revenge Of The Sith on Anakin and Obi-wan duel on Mustafar you can see Anakin try to force push Obi-wan but Obi-wan retaliates with his own force push. They have a stand off trying to both force push eachother until they both go flying back. Maybe whats stopping a force user from ripping the other person apart is the other person using the force to retaliate if that makes sense.

George Lucas has described Star Wars as an onion, having many deeper and deeper layers. He's talked about some in interviews or commentaries, and only alluded to others. Since this metaphor fits so well with the iceberg format, I wish someone could make a chart not about lore (which is also cool) but about the thematic/psychological significance of the movies. One random example is his use of mirror images. E.g. how the end shots of Empire and Clones are flipped versions of each other with the two skywalkers and two droids, or Obi-Wan holding Qui-Gon's dead body next to a pit being a reverse of Luke doing the same with Anakin, followed by flipped images of Qui-Gon versus Anakin's burning bodies.

Great essay! About as deep as I think I ever want to go, but a very entertaining dive.
Your speculations around droid sentience really grabbed my attention. But droids memories aren’t wiped to forestall or erase sentience (if you use the dictionary definition of sentience - which is simply a capacity to sense an environment using vision, hearing, touch, etc. - a very basic level of cognition) Rather, it seems to be for preventing the formation of a strong independent identity - which of course does depend very much on memory - because a sense of self that might engender concerns outside a droid’s specific function compromises their usefulness. (It also has a security function, but that’s not as germane here). But those memory wipes aren’t intended to interfere with basic sentience since that would often make droids useless. A “janitor droid” unable to sense moisture, attenuate the pressure it uses to clean a mirror, or determine whether a given object is garbage or not, wouldn’t be a very effective janitor. Your description about droids being slaves, though? Dead on.
    Subbed.
p.s. Not to be an asshole, but I think you said “Their (the Bendu) clash with the Inquisitor Thrawn (16:02) ….but Thrawn wasn’t an inquisitor, he was an officer in the imperial navy (a grand admiral). If I misunderstood you, please ignore this.
p.p.s. Okay, this IS me being a pedantic asshole, but evidence can’t be circumspect. (21:33) To be circumspect is to be cautious, careful, prudent, etc. which is something a living, thinking entity can pull off, but evidence is generally inanimate (unless specifically described to be otherwise, which is quite unusual and not well served by the term). Saying evidence is circumspect is like saying a lightbulb is self-righteous or a brick is gripped by foreboding. Just saying…

The Rule of Two was born when Bane found Revan's holocron. Revan realized the Darkside is weak when shared amongst an army and came up with The Rule of Two. But Revan killed Malek, his former apprentice, and turned away from the Darksid, leaving the galaxy to find a hidden Sith Lord (did not end well for Revan). The Sith repeated the mistakes of their past until Bane learned The Rule of Two from Revan and learned the Spirit Bomb ritual that he used to trick the Sith Army into destroying itself. Revan went through way too much to not even get a mention.

I lay the reasoning for how expansive Star Wars is at the foot of novels, comics, and table-top roleplaying games. I have recently heard in another video that the roleplaying games was one of the earliest starts of it, which really, when I look sideways at Faerûn and beyond into the D&D multiverse... and yeah, roleplaying games need a lot of establishing info. But a lot of the history lore is down to novels, comics, and a bit later, video games. Plus, all those have had almost 50 years, longer if one considers George Lucus's work on the scripts before the movies started being made (there are quite a few names and concepts that got reused later on, like Bogan and Ashla, Starkiller, the Whills, and more).

    • @TheMimiSard

One thing about Chewbacca I am fond of is that the early concept art for him eventually got recycled and turned into Garazeb Orrelios, and by extension all Lasats, which includes Cal Kestis' master, Jaro Tapal, which just makes me think that as soon as a new race is introduced in canon, someone will use it in other parts of the franchise.

With manipulating the force, it requires attention to that specific thing youre doing. While battling, you have to fight, use the force to help you in that fight, and direct the force in either defense or offense. I believe if a person had a high mental capacity, they can do many things at the same time. Like dueling, while force pushing, while levitating at the same time. Probably has a lot to do with your "oneness" with the force as well.
Also, sith cant project themselves as force ghosts because they use the force in a negative way. Essentially, the force is being petty with them.

All force combatants have a type of shield in the force surrounding them which is why usually when they are caught off guard or exhausted it becomes easier to use force abilities on said opponent because in that moment their force barrier either faltered or dissipated. This usually don't last long though because force combatants also use the force to bolster their energy and strength when fighting just every living being has a limit. The reason why its confusing is because the force is a seemingly infinite entity with countless applications but i hope that kind of gives you an idea as to why force users cant just implode one another on sight lmao.

Technically everyone is connected to the force, but not everyone was born to the bonded connection to the force, and Shmi Skywalker is the great example of someone who is not born to or cannot wield the power of the force, but has a powerful enough connection with it to bare a conceived child through it; and this is a very rare case of a possible star child of the force, because in most cases of producing a Jedi child is if a Jedi or rather a force user would have a secret relationship with a non-force user will most assuredly be the parents of a force sensitive who might become the next future force user, but we never got to see if there have been two force users who gets Married and have a child of their own. The whole reason why the sith use red crystals is because in the EU (The true cannon, suck my ass Disney) natural red crystals was super rare, I mean only a few sith in the Star Wars galaxy history ever had one that we know off. So they had to use synthetic red crystals, the opposite of Jedi and there natural crystals, a Ying Yang scenario that also fit the two factions well..

3:02 because the Force is a *utility* to *all Sith,* while the Force is an *ally* in different ways to all Jedi, based on their relationship with it. Someone could be a guardian of the Force and have a blue lightsaber, or a consular interested in reflecting on the nature of the Force and get a green lightsaber, or a guard of the Jedi Order itself and get a yellow lightsaber, but a Sith will always *use* the Force abusively, refusing any such Jedi relationship with the Force.

@@VaultLore Great video, dude! The thing I love about Star Wars iceberg videos is that a franchise as sprawling as Star Wars isn't really just one iceberg - it's more like... well, an asteroid field. With a bunch of unrelated or tangentially related icebergs floating around and bumping into each other sometimes. Each individual property in the Star Wars universe has a "beneath the iceberg", and some are insane if you really dig into them. I kind of liked how you grabbed a little from a bunch of different sectors of the universe to talk about!

Haha I started digging thinking I could put a lot in one video before realizing the sprawling world that like 1000 different authors have contributed to. Glad you liked the video!

@@VaultLore I‘m that type of guy to judge people, or in this case videos, too early. Left a comment back then on the first video I watched from you, was absolutely stunned. Keep up the amazing work, if I can give a tiny suggestion, it‘s no sin to re-record your voiceover when you pronounce a word wrong or get stuck on a certain word. Tiny tiny tiny thing I noticed, people who are not as autistic as I am probably don‘t even notice it, but I‘d like to suggest the improvement because in my opinion, that would be the last step to bring your videos, at least for me, to absolute perfection. Please never do less depth, less detail, less video length or similar. You are building an incredibly loyal community, compared to 10-20min essay channels, you will PERSIST, instead of living off some hype :)

I appreciate it! I try to correct and look up pronunciations when I can, I don’t get them all, but these videos are like a straight hour of voiceover, so it’s hard to catch the all. Thanks for watching though!

This is a great video but, because Disney have effectively killed Star Wars, they've caused me to lose any real interest I ever had. The Star Wars Expanded Universe was infinitely better than ANYTHING the house of mouse crapped out. Such a shame!
