#mattmcmuscles #soulcalibur #fightinggames - Hry
I can't believe Nintendo let Link touch butts with the sexiest character in all of fighting games, Voldo.
My fondest memory of this game is playing it with a pair of DK Bongos at my friend's house when we were like 13. I found out where to hit the bongos to make Link shoot an arrow and spin, and that was enough to camp my friend out every match
Legendary
When I was graduating from elementary school we had a class party on the last day and were allowed to bring in video games. I brought my gamecube and this game and all the cliques basically dissolved for a full class Soulcaliber 2 tournament. Still one of my favourite memories.
I remember playing this as a kid having no idea what SC even was other than it having Link, so I ended up treating it as a Zelda fighting game with a bunch of OCs to fill in the roster rather than it’s own thing. Really funny to think back on.
I always thought Link's sub-boss should've been Nightmare, since he bears such a close resemblance to Iron Knuckle.
Or the fact that Link's backstory is him going after Soul Edge so naturally Nightmare would be his primary foe. Which would have been even better by the fact that they are both voiced by the same actor in Japanese.
They also share the same VA.
it would make sense. his story says it was Soul Edge's influence that brought Link to this world, and Nightmare is the one that wields Soul Edge.
Guess they thought the new guy needed a push.
Personally I think the intro to the original Soul Edge/Blade is the untoppable intro for the series - between the song and all the pumpy moments it's absolutely *the* bearded & horned farmyard animal
Probably the best entry in the series, I'm not big into 3D fighters but something about Soul Calibur just hits
That is the best part. It is easy to pick up and play. But mastery, that is the journey
i tend to be more favorable towards 3 (or 6, as the case may be) because i'm just drawn to character creation and customization, but there's no denying that 2 is a masterpiece, no matter where you play it.
Weapon Master mode with Link was cool. Get to unlock a bunch of iconic equipment like the razor sword, megaton hammer, and the great fairy sword.
You bringing this video after Harada through the biggest Soul Calibur was a great timing, my guy.
This game is one of those where every sight and sound is forever etched across the meat of my brain as the most potent of sense memories. Like, even just switching options in a menu is sending me backwards in time. That intro, man.
I play the GC version a lot. It's amazing how good it still looks all these years later. And then the fact that one of Link's grabs involves him snapping his opponent's arm and tossing them is still wild.
Mai Shiranui isn't allowed in Smash Bros, but here Link is allowed to hang out with Taki and Ivy!
it's a Japan thing.
SC2- the highest calibur of soul. Back in the 2000s, I was fortunate enough to have access to a cabinet at a small local arcade. The Conquest Mode claimed many quarters, but my AI Nightmare ensured that our team ruled the land 🥇
I still play the Weapon Master gauntlets every now and then just over and over, peak of the series right here.
Miss Talim's actress for this game, she really doesnt have many other credits besides this.
I played this on a CRT a few weeks back and I swear it looks better than most modern games. The craftsmanship in some of these games is truly unparalleled.
Artstyle > graphical fidelity
Inferno is the demon that inhabits Soul Edge/he’s Nightmare for 3 & 4. Just reanimating the armor
Then in 5 at some point, Raphael was killed and used as the host lol
I'm 99% certain Raphael is ALSO the sub-boss for Spawn and Heihachei.
Raphael is the most significant of the new characters, since he's the one that gets the destined battle with Nightmare that leads into SC3, so I guess they were just trying to push him by having him be the character all the guests get a destined battle with.
He was
Yes, I remember Heihachi and Raphael back to back, then Raph swings his saber behind him and Heihachi blocks the sword with his armlet without looking.
Soul Calibur 2 is the best Soul Calibur, and i gonna die on that hill.
Make room on that hilltop for one more.
I think it's a safe assumption that the Nintendo Gamecube version of "Soul Calibur II" is considered the best version due to it featuring Link as a playable character compared to the PS2 and Xbox versions that had Heihachi and Spawn as playable characters respectively.
It's too bad that Nintendo ended up getting the shaft when it came to console exclusive content for "Shovel Knight", however, since the other platforms had an exclusive stage and boss fight featuring an awesome cameo of a character from a different series: The PlayStation version had Kratos from "God Of War", the Xbox and PC versions had Zitz, Rash, and Pimple from "Battletoads", and the Nintendo version had...nothing.
I grew up with the PS2 version since my family & neighbours were Sony loyalists, so personally I prefer Heihachi over Link.
Perhaps the same goes for Spawn for those who were raised on an Xbox?
Definitely the game that propelled this series.
SIR VANT TAYS
A few notes here;
1) Link actually kinda sucks as a fighter. Most of his attacks and all of his projectiles can be seen coming from a mile away, and he just does okay damage.
2) Raphael is the sub-boss for _all_ the guest characters. I guess it was just easier to do the same guy three times.
3) Normally, Cassandra's stage plays Link's theme. It only plays in the Chapel in Arcade Mode. Also, the Chapel is in no way Zelda-related.
I remember the day I picked up my pre order. My friends and I had finished our college lectures for the day just after lunch and popped into town. We ended up playing at our friends house near by until about an hour and a half before college the next day 😊
If ever Soul Caliber VII becomes a thing, and if it ends up being released on the Switch 2, I'd fancy seeing not only Link, but also Zelda, as playable characters...with the latter using her newfound ability to create echoes and using them to defeat her opponents!
Didn't the developers from Project Soul mention that they don't want to repeat guest fighters. Now that I think about it, no guest character had more than one appearance in any Soul game
I mean, if Namco makes a Soul Calibur VII, which I doubt they'll do, and make a Switch 2 version, which I also doubt they'll do considering how very few big Namco games were on Switch, the most probable Nintendo guest fighter could be a Fire Emblem one
@@pablocasas5906 oh I don't know. Nintendo and Bandai Namco have a pretty tight relationship in recent years- developing three Smash games, assisting in certain titles such as Mario Kart 8, New Pokémon Snap, Pokken, sharing characters with each other (Nintendo music in Taiko, FE and Xenoblade characters in PxZ2, Kos-Mos and Telos making appearances in Xenoblade 2). Granted there's not been a Tekken or Soul Calibur on Nintendo systems for a while but Bandai Namco did start two new studios focusing on Nintendo systems so I think the two companies are pretty amicable.
That said, if there was to be a Nintendo character in a new SC game, I'd opt for Pit (Kid Icarus) or, with the Monolith Soft connection, a Xenoblade character. Doesn't have to be Shulk, Rex or Noah but most characters could fit well enough
We played this during my 16th birthday party. Great great times. Link was the best exclusive character.
I remember Raphael being a beast in this game. He had so much stuff that was safe on block that you could just get in once and spend the whole round attacking. Vary your timing to bait out a couple of parry attempts to land some unsafe stuff to keep it going and mix in a liberal amount of his awesome low options to watch the hits add up.
Considering they made SCII HD as a standalone release I don't think they'd ever make a collection of the series. At most they'd bundle Soul Edge and Soul Calibur in a collection.
This was one of two fighting games I ever played competitively. (The other was Marvel vs Capcom 2.) My local arcade ran tournaments of it every other weekend for like a year, and I won several- and usually Top 5'd in the rest.
Still one of the greatest Soul Caliburs of all time. If Nintendo ever put Gamecube games on Switch 2, this needs to be on there.
Also, it's crazy to consider just how cool Nintendo were with letting their characters be inserted into other publisher's games around this time period. Mario in NBA Street, Little Mac in Fight Night...
They sure do have a stick up their ass THESE days. Hell they barely let their own teams be creative like when they told the paper Mario team way back they COULDN’T ALTER THE CHARACTERS IN ANY WAY which is how we got the cloned toads and loops for infinity ect. And that’s just ONE series they messed with.
I really miss the days when visual clarity was forced by hardware limitations and we didn't have thousands of textures in the background, lighting obscuring the model, and flashes and splashes 2x the size of the characters.
Necrid's design is SO Todd Marfarlene lol
There's alot about his design I like, but I just wish he didn't have one massive arm, and said massive arm didn't have those two horns
Imagine Fromsoft announcing a "Souls-like" that takes place in the Soul Calibur universe.
My favorite thing about Link was always using his grab at the edge of the arena to ring everyone out. It was basically an insta-win against the cpus.
i was little when i got this on the xbox - got it the day it came out and played it a looot :3 i still listen to the soundtrack often
Link is ironically why the franchise died or he was atleast the first catalyst.
Namco thinks nobody actually cares about Soul Calibur, if the only talking points for Soul Calibur were characters that Namco doesn't own.
In the intro it seems that Amy directed the soldiers in another direction allowing Raphael to escape their pursuit.
Yeah, I meant what Did Raph do?
@@flophouseplays Ah. Sorry. Probably got caught with his hands red after biting (or murdering) someone. Not sure when that vampiric persona started, but that's my guess.
@@DanteMasaruthe vampire stuff happened in 4 I believe? He was killed offscreen/his corpse was used for Nightmare in 5
@@Primekillerboy I see. Could've been a gradual thing and Soul Edge (specifically the Evil Seed) was probably something of a catalyst making him become full vampire.
@@DanteMasaruit’s weird because it’s never addressed in universe that Raphael was Nightmare. Someone had to hack the model and it’s Raph underneath the armor
And you can also play Raphael’s ghost(?)
SC2 takes me back. I was at an anime convention, and they had the game available to play. I picked Link, and had a ball. So much fun.
I eventually bought SC2 for the GameCube. Loved it
Oh man soul caliber they did some of the most coolest guest characters!
You have GameCube with (this)
Xbox has spawn
And PS2 has hehichi from TEKKEN!
Remember when marvel superhero vs street fighter has this weird exclusive character named norimaro?
Also fighting vipers has pepsiman!
I love this game! Didn't know anything about it, only saw Link on the box and brought it. It's my favourite fighting game and the first I used the training mode to experiment with characters and search for combos. In the end, no one liked to fight against me and I was not allowed to play with Link!😁
I played with every character in all modes and unlocked everything, all characters, all weapons, all modes. It is very special for me and the reason I like the Soul Calibur series.
And because of shit talk about SC2, after the announcement of SC6, I investigated the reasons about the negativity, found the old SRK site, learned about how huge fighting games are and recover my love for fighting games (also brought then a lot of old fighting games).
And of course Link in SC made me wish for a Legend of Zelda fighting game in style of SC.
weapon master mode is so fuckin cool
I replayed my old ps2 copy that I still had since the game came out and forgot that the file for it was deleted because of soul calibur 3's memory card wipe bug and unlocked everything again for it, then later started playing the HD version on my xbox X and unlocking everything on that. lol, but the game is still fun and wish switch had a soul calibur game at least maybe a better HD version for it.
Soul Calibur 2 is an absolute treat. One of my favorite fighting games.
There definitely has to be a definitive edition of SC2 so that we will be able to play it on Nintendo Switch.
I might never see Taki or Ivy physics again. And this franchise had so much potential with other types of games. Say a Souls Calibur game.
Ok what is going on? Why do we all have Soul Calibur on the brain!? I was browsing for older Soul Caliber games last week and a few days ago, Yovideogames just dropped a Soul Caliber IV video, and now Matt McMuscles drops a Soul Calibur 2 video!
WHAT IS GOING ON?!
It's cool that SC2 on each ports have their own guest characters, and I can see why the GameCube version has the biggest sales. I played the PS2 version of it.
Watching peak Soul Calibur fills me with inspirational joy and sadness.
I can never have enough Soulcalibur. NEVER!
I would love a soul calibur where the whole roster is nothing but the guest characters
Still one of the best Soul Calibur game imo
It was a bit of a bummer but also somewhat hype to get Heihachi on the PS2, it could also be me being a hardcore Tekken fan back then thinking that...
The best version of Soul Calibur 2. It's not open for discussion.
Since Cloud in PS2 SC2 fell through, Namco should have asked Sony to let them use Dart from Legend of Dragoon or something. And then the HD port could only have Spawn in it since we know Sony would have never allowed other companies to share their IP back then, either. :D
My first SoulCalibur ever: didn’t play it for long since the Gamecube we had was borrowed and then it broke (?), but my heart lays with the third one which was in my opinion 10x better.
I’d love to see the third one along with the first for the Dreamcast and also Soul Edge 🙏🏻.
You’re not a jukebox obv but I would also love to see you play Virtua Fighter 1 and 2 if you ever feel like it obv.
Love your videos
Ah yes. My arguably favorite SC game!
I always thought Fire Emblem was perfect to pull from for guest characters. Of course, that will still never top Link, but what if both???
Yeah, I'm unrealistic. And maybe Capcom can make Nintendo vs Capcom next!
Fire Emblem was barely a thing outside of Japan in 2002. Took a lot longer for it to become popular in the west.
@@flophouseplays Oops, "I always thought..." might have been a bad choice of phrase (ack, I hate thinking how old these games are today). But rather, lately I have been thinking FE might be a good choice, especially since they don't seem to like using the same guest more than once.
But alas, Soul Calibur never came back to Nintendo systems, likely for the reason you mentioned with Tekken on the Wii U. At least we have the character creator in the newer entries to simulate whatever guest you want.
was playing this recently, damn i love it
At least we have the modded Soul Calibur 2 Plus that has all 3 console exclusive characters.
Still the best Soul Calibur that i think still holds up and the best version with Link in it. There's just something that this entry does better than anything that came after it, most likely because of the amount of content, all the extra fun weapons, profiles, endings and extra modes you can get. Weapon Master is easily the best mode in this game with all the variety it has and the reason to play this 😁.
This is technically my first fighting game. Me or my parents must've thought it was a Zelda game. I just remember thinking the controls were really weird and frustrating, at least for Link. I had some success just mashing buttons as Nightmare, and more success as Talim but she was a girl ew and I didn't want to play as a girl.
With new info about Soul Cablibur franchise that came to light. Its too bad now that legend still burns but it's only a flicker.
Honestly, it would never be too late to make an HD version of SoulCalibur II for the Switch. It's not like Switch users don't buy late ports in droves or anything like that. And I can't imagine Nintendo not playing ball, considering the other times they have collaborated with Bandai Namco.
Grab the HD version, slap Link on it, call it SoulCalibur II HD Definitive or Ultimate or something like that and it's a deal.
I'm surprised you're not using the mod that gives you all of the three guest characters in one game, as well as pre Nightmare Siegfried.
Well, I only wanted to play as Link.
@@flophouseplays You know, completely fair!
Link was probably my favorite of the SC2 guests, even if he wasn't the best character.
This is one of my top 5 all time favorite fighting games. I loved the weapon master mode. Too bad they made Link look kind of like an insect.
Try Soul Caliber 4 OR please do more of this one! It really is the GOAT of SC games!
the GameCube still has some of the crispest graphics ever. look at how clean it looks.
Well put, I would also quite dig an HD remake for Soul Caibur...
...THREE.
That elongated pause the announcer had has to come back if they do SC3HD.
Maybe something like a Mortal Kombat Trilogy with the first three (and Edge) in one package with just the best bits added.
I had played Soulcalibur on the Dreamcast a couple years before I caught wind of this game on a commercial. I was already a big fan of the game, so imagine my shock when Link was making his appearance as a guest character. That was a day one need for me. We originally got it as a rental before I got it for keeps on my bday.
I love the game and all, but my only real disappointment was no playable Inferno
I always preferred Soul Caliber over Tekken. It’s my favorite 3D fighter. I’m a monster with Nightmare
As much as I do like Tekken, there is something about Soul Calibur that I always preferred[most likely Taki, yeah it was probably Taki].
@@BigEOT3 for me there was something more strategic about this game with the weapons based gameplay, and the graphics were always a cut above every other fighter on the market
@@JamesJohnson-tr1guThat too. I was amazed at Soul Calibur 4’s visuals for its time and they still hold up[for the most part].
So Cally Too for Cube was the only Cally Too that features characters from Farland, Tekken and Tendo.
Hey everyone! I'm Spawn from Farland. My favorite things are tying my face shoe lace, green demonic energy and WANDAAA! See you all in So Cally Too.
@@zaneseibert fuck yes
Oh hell yeah!
I forgot how cool Link's throws were.
Link's voice... Is that Batsu (Rival Schools)?
Yes, Ocarina of Time Link was voiced by Nobuyuki Hiyama, so that means Link shares the same voice with Joe from Fatal Fury, Guy from GaoGaiGar, Hiei from Yu☆Yu☆Hakusho, Viral from Gurren Lagann and The Hero from Dragon Quest 3
@@pablocasas5906 Neat!
all of the guest characters get the raphael rival battle in soul calibur 2. I guess because raph is the "main" character for 2s story? so hes the default?
inferno is the spirit of soul edge coming out after raphael stabbed the sword with soul calibur while the character you play as was just stood around until inferno came out, which I guess is why inferno has soul calibur stuck in his butt the entire fight?
If you do a weapon master longplay, I'll give you a big kiss.
... or not? Whichever is the greater incentive to you 🤷♂️ just do it!
A weapon master playthrough with Link? Yes plz 😁
I think they could rerelease them sans the special licensed characters if they actually added a lot of cool extra in-universe characters to each of the games that lost their respective Darth Vaders and Links.
Arzette for the next Soul Calibur
When it comes to SC, I guess you can say guest characters are a double edge sword.
I absolutely love playing as Link, but it's a shame the newer generation won't get this experience because of legal reasons.
I thought this game was the best ever when it first came out.
I say let Nintendo have SoulCalibur VII so we can get Link back alongside a bunch of their other characters.
Spawn and Heihachi also fight Raphael for their destined battles, so much less fitting for them.
Why is link beating up George Washington lol
This was a big deal when it came out. Specifically, I remember how much they pushed the idea that each of the three different consoles all had one unique character exclusive to that version.
But can you get to Night Terror in Soul Calibur III? I can't.
I had tried hours upon hours trying to beat Olcadan because you only get one chance to fight him. You gotta beat him to fight Nightterror at all!
The first time i encountered Nightterror was the Final Battle event match,
Lets Goooo 💀🩵
I've tried shouting, "Extend!" before, and I get nothing but funny looks. Maybe it only works on swords...
We need a #freesoulcalibur2 campaign
It's so funny to me that literally nobody cares about the other versions because LINK'S IN THIS GAME
Shame this game's lackluster sales on 7th gen systems resulted in BandaiNamco never really doing SoulCalibur rereleases again, although none of those late generation fighting game rereleases did well from what I heard. Looking back, it's not really a surprise with how the new systems were either out or on the horizon, with each release also coming out with it's own baggage
Capcom releases-flooded market of 2D games, and in the case of Darkstalkers...it was Darkstalkers
Virtua Fighter 2-Virtua Fighter hadn't had anything else going on at the time other than another version of 5
SoulCalibur II HD-No Link and it's post SCV so I imagine some people were pissed off
Thankfully Capcom gave rereleases/compilations another shot and actually had success, meanwhile Sega and Bandai Namco don't really want to put in the effort to give it another try in a changed gaming landscape.
Woah hey stop talkin shit about my boy Necrid, I thought he was the coolest as a kid and those feelings are pretty much unchanged now lol
Juice?
Im a shameless voldo main
This is absolutely one of my favorite fighters of all time and seeing it again brings back such a wave of nostalgia. 2/10 video though Not Enough Necrid
Heihachi as the "special" character was pretty lame, sure, but he was also the best fighter out of the three tbh.
3..3333333
Amazing game. And soon it will have Retro Achievements with Dolphin.
Hated Link. He was cheap as all hell + he's tiny (hard to hit/annoying to fight). Yoda succeeded his turd mantle in SC4. Spawn on XBox was my fave as he felt the most balanced of the 3 different, platform guests 👍
He doesn't low profile anything, what
