you know, when i was little i remember my dad telling me to never type in a web address and only google them because some sites are dangerous, but to be honest i never knew what he was talking about and by now after many years i had forgotten about it. but this video reminded me, and NOW i know why he said it. i was born in 2002, so it was probably in like 2011 or 12.
i was born in 1991, and my dad was already a huge techie. he made damn well sure that what we were searching was safe. pörn pop-ups were kind of an inevitable back in the day. once i was a teen and parental controls wasn't a necessity anymore, my dad and i had a conversation. he told me that while he didn't want us to see the sexy stuff, it was the shock/gore sites he wanted to protect us from the most. he was a real sensitive dude.
unfortunately the McAfee origins are not real. digging deeper i found a youtube channel called "G B" (maybe that's short for "Greg Bertrand" ?) that uploaded multiple videos relating to malware research, including an extended cut of the ad. the video doesnt only show the goggle website, it in fact shows multiple websites and is insanely cut down and edited to make it more dramatic. in some parts you can even see a text document open with a list of what I think are URLs of these malicious websites
Also, when you load anything online, you are downloading it temporarily onto your device so it can be displayed. There's a lot of other more technical reasons why internet security was so bad back then (and how websites could easily just put whatever on your computer as a result) but yeah. We get our hands held so much these days
2006 was before Chrome, before ad- and popupblockers, internet encryptions were not required and certainly not expected. It's cute how all CZcamsrs try to convince us we need VPNs to protect us when you lived through this.
I once took a deep dive in LDPC codes. There are things in the workings of our modern internet, that we don't know and were essentially determined by trial and error. Just to a degree that it most likely works all the time. Turns out that even if you do understand everything it's built on, it's still magic.
I'm disappointed you didn't explain how goggle was able to infect computers simply by going to the url in your browser, or really explain much beyond the surface level user experience.
I never been on goggle but I can totally see people that don't know much about the internet. My mom hardly knows anything about the internet and I can see her accidentally going on here
I remember that mcafee ad video from when i was a child and i remember some people related to bleepingcomputers and danooct1 (a forum about malwares and a renowned virus youtuber) that it was a hoax and while spysheriff was real Goggle was never as dramatically dangerous as that
I remember being in high school around 1999-2000, and our music teacher insisted on using google not ask jeeves, Goggle typo was quite common back then, but nothing happened obviously.
I guarantee y'all this site was very real and at the very least contained lots of adware (at the time I went on it, around 2009 or 2010.) I accidentally went on it as a child and I still remember being terrified that I destroyed my grandparents PC. Luckily they had Norton so nothing ended up happening (and I immediately closed the browser when I saw the site was definitely not Google) but I made very sure to type Google correctly every single time from that point on, and to this say I still always make sure I'm typing it right even if the auto-fill does it for me. I know I'm just another anecdote, but some on the Internet have been saying it was probably just mass hysteria or a hoax, but 100% I guarantee it's not and I still have a clear memory of being terrified by going to what I thought was Google. Again it was 2009 or 2010 when I went on this site, so the effects weren't as dramatic as other earlier reports.
what the fuck does goggle even do? there's no way a 2006 website can remotely install shit like this just from entering it. i've heard an absurd amount of the consequences of the site, but what the hell *is* goggle outside of the vague description of "virus website"?
Honestly idk how just visiting a site could crash the computer. Seriously i have been to the must virus ridden sites while pirating and just browsing. I have always found as long as you aren't an idiot and dont download the fake adds that try and pose as windows or as virus protection then you'll be okay. Never have i encountered a website that could open files on my PC, run exe files or open CMD or anything.
It's possible due to vulnerabilities exist inside the browser you used to browse the website. I think goggle abused the vulnerabilties exist inside internet explorer. However, browser security has come a long way and exploit chain like this which have tremendous control over the computer have become a rarer occurence. It can also explain why goggle isnt as dangerous as before, the vulnerabilties have already been fixed a long time ago and goggle turned into an obvisous scamming website

You would have had to go to google to do that by which you run the risk of typing it goggle.
