IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND FORTNITE BATTLEPASS YOU WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND TRUE PVE
I think Overwatch players underestimate how many creators in gaming were stoked for the PvE. People who don’t really PvP or have a different regular try hard game like the OW world and were so excited for the PvE. Everyone would have reviewed it everywhere and it could have been HUGE. No one will come back for drip fed one off missions.
The potential was HUGE
They could've built a really amazing IP with that, and would've cleansed their name from their past mistakes in a single blow, so they obvioyhqd to fumble it
Problem was as hype as everyone was, the overall beta they did got heavily criticized so they tried to listen to players and change it which overloaded them into not doing it, why in beta you see like 5 skill changes and in dev talk they say their would have been 50 and improving gear drops for each hero etc..
But yea they should have outsourced it to someone with more pve skill instead of trying to do it themselves and ignoring pvp but then we wouldn't have diablo immortal or latest wow campaigns I guess
@@scottjohnson1060 factually wrong, they didn't get "overloaded" trying to listen to players and it wasn't supposed to be only 5 skills until players complained they were too little, they showed from the start what they wanted the skill tree to look like and stopped working on it because someone thought they would make more revenue by just selling skins and adding some random hero each 2 seasons

Let's say you order a eggs benedict at a restaurant but the waiter comes back with just a hard boiled egg. That is basically the situation we're dealing with OW2.

Asmon looks genuinely excited in that trailer reveal reaction. Like, actually genuinely hyped.
Thinking back, I think just about everyone I knew in gaming was excited, actually.
To imagine that we now live in a timeline where a company could get such a massive wave of genuine, optimistic support and anticipation and decide to unzip and unload a massive dump all over it at a time when they so desperately need a PR win is... I'm bereft of words.
Mike, when I saw the OG cinematic coupled with the pve proof of concept I was weeping. Watched it on loop for weeks, theory crafting builds and whatnot. @@nailinthefashion Yeah, same here. It sounded absolutely amazing. Everything I wanted in one of the best game universes I've seen in a long time.

@@AndragonLea I figured covid would set anyone back, let alone a million dollar project, but boy was I right in the worst way possible lmao
They tossed a goldmine in seeking short term gains
@@nailinthefashion Yeah, but Blizzard is a billion dollar company and Overwatch made MAD cash even years after release and during the content drought, so while I expected Covid to slow development, I also expected Blizzard to hire as necessary to meet their promises because they clearly couldn't claim poverty preventing them from doing that.
Just the box sales alone - they had 50 million box sales as of April 2022 and the game was sold for 30 bucks without discounts. That's 1.5 bil in revenue just from the box sales, no skin sales.
They didn't publish the numbers for all of their skin sales, but the charity ones they had to publicize - Pink Mercy made them 12.7 mil in two weeks.
Even if we assumed that most of the leggy skins sold for less (and that's debatable, some of them were much better than Pink Mercy in my opinion) and lootbox sales were low because the game was generous, they must've still made out like bandits.
I want to give them slack but the only reason I see for them to cancel the PvE is because they decided Overwatch 2 was selling as many battlepasses as it would with the PvP and didn't want to spend the money to make PvE reality if they didn't have to and couldn't use it as an excuse to monetize it more than the game already is.
This is corporate's attempt to weasel out of putting their money where their mouth was in my eyes.
Highly replayable to barely playable.
Bliz: The fans won't notice.
The fact that that was literally their train of thought and going for freaking high scores would be enough LMAO overwatch 1 archives all over again
It was not unreasonable to be upset about getting rid of loot boxes for a battle pass and 20$ for a skin. Loot boxes are not ideal, but they are a hell of a lot better than the system they have now. At least with loot boxes you could unlock content by playing the game. Now you have to spend a ridiculous amount of money to have any type of customization. 60$ vs 100s of $ within its life span. They know what they’re doing.
If the battlepass wasn't so predatory and didn't lock skins and earned credits behind premiums i wouldn't actually mind the change, but lootboxes were better all around.

"I thought it was just gonna be a new mode!"
He's a prophet.
My issue wasn't going from lootboxes to battlepass in OW2, my problem was including the new hero in it locking out others, not have the "buy once" battlepass that pays for the next one and lastly rewarding F2P players WAY less than they used to when it came to lootboxes.
A full fledged story mode with the lore and characters would’ve been so cool

My wife was recently watching Doug Doug play through Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe with his brother. Doug Doug's brother, Davey, was the creator of Stanley Parable. They were making jokes and asking each other questions about the game while Doug Doug played. Doug Doug gets to the "New Content" section and Davey asks "What do you think the new content is gonna be?". Doug Doug says "Overwatch 2"...and that hits soo different/hard now!
they brought over the candy crush team to make mischeif and magic.
Dude, I thought about that as a joke, but if they made a match 3 game mode with crystals on Blizzardworld I wouldn’t be surprised anymore hahahahaha. Horrifically tone deaf
Pay very close attention to the wording used in the official Blizzard statement about the PvE.
Their language is so ambiguous, cold, yet it's intentions are specifically targeted to the sympathy of the playerbase.
Then they compensate by making vague promises and points about the current game, and statements that are technically true to misdirect players into believing the game is bigger than it is.
I'm not convinced this was anything other than higher-ups straight up making a plan to make a fake game to lure players into financially supporting a "new" game that is exactly the same as the first.
It makes too much business sense to do that, for it to not be at least somewhat true. Clearly, live service PvP is the current trend. Blizzard will definitely focus on supporting that kind of model. So, if your product representative of that model is beginning to slow down or lag behind, why commit resources to a new risk when you can create the illusion of a new product that happens to just be exactly the same as the first.
The point of OW2 wasn't to release a new project that innovates on the formula and fixes its issues, the point of it was to simply keep the brand alive; not improve it, but keep it alive.
Furthermore, in many nations lootboxes became illegal, therefore they are a far less lucrative platform for revenue. How can you retain or increase that revenue without committing extra resources to it? Change the model to fit the current trend. How can you get players to be at least as invested in a product as the previous one, with no commitment to deeper development, AND a steeper microtransaction platform? Make them believe the new product will offer something unique.
And, how can you ease that newly lured playerbase into becoming fully invested in the new product? Release the basis of the two products that are identical early "just because," or better yet increase the interest in the false lead by saying "we're taking longer to work on the new product so we will release the same product sooner."
Then once you have them, allow them to believe the new product is still on the way for long enough so that a consistent and steady revenue stream can begin with the new micro-transaction platform. Then, once you have that and are passed the point of a greater potential financial loss, cut the new product and claim it was too big, too complex; I.e.: "too groundbreaking" to be sustained by the team in order to release.
By that time, you have:
- Taken no new risks
- retained a satisfactory percentage of the previous player base
- Avoided loss of potential markets for the previous financial in-game platform
- Established a new financial in-game platform that actually increases the potential profits and in more markets than potentially before
- Avoided committing resources to a product which wouldn't have been able to produce a revenue stream immediately to support itself, or profit as soon and as well as the already existing product
- By the time you announce the new product's failure to launch, you'll have established a revenue stream sufficient enough to profit
It's fucking sadistic, toxic, theoretically should be illegal, but it's genius. Bobby Kotick exploits his consumers in very carefully thought out precise attacks.
In reality I can only believe there are two scenarios:
- Bobby Kotick intended to allow the Overwatch team to innovate and develop something new and interesting that had a high potential for revenue, only at a delay and coat of resources.
Or
- Bobby Kotick played a long strategy to exploit a player base he knows somewhat trusts the dev team, who are used to one type of gameplay and would be invested in the idea of a different kind of it, then exploited them to trick them into investing in the same product twice under the guise of a project that "was too big to continue" even though it was in development for several years.
What's honestly more believable? Lying to impressionable players to get them invested in a new platform that follows new market trends, through lying about a ghost project? Or investing time and resources into a project that could've innovated on a currently existing project but with much lower potential revenue over time.
This is from the same company that fostered sexual harassment, Assault, theft of personal objects, all under the acceptance of a CEO who managed all the games of the company.
Look at how the other brands and products of Blizzard have been treated during the leadership of Bobby Kotick. Diablo Immortal, WoW, Diablo 4 even.
Ocham's Razor: The solution to a problem that requires the least amount of assumptions is more often the most likely answer.
I guarantee you, Bobby is carefully monitoring the player base reaction to this news, not because he's simply the one responsible for the success of all of these products but because he's testing the tolerance of the consumers. The minute there's an accelerating trend of revenue decreasing or player counts decreasing, he's pulling the plug on the game AND the dev team. It keeps happening at big companies like this, and it will continue until it no longer results in future successes.
Longest comment ever
Which means this will be over soon, last game people still have some hope on is diablo 4. If bobby manipulates that game to drain your cash as quick as possible, people will lose all the little trust left on blizzard and will forever be the scam company, so activision can just send it to the graveyard as it cannot be squeezed for money anymore
well, let's hope then that OW2 dies soon, because I honestly couldn't care less anymore, luckily I didn't spend any money on it.
Finally someone who gets it. He not only played the fanbase in investing he also played the people that were generally interested in O2's PvE mode outside of the main fanbase and also those who were under influencers/content creators that were excited & practically promoted from their reaction alone. It was all to boost interest in OW. It's genius but man it's so unethical.
Imo they capitalized off of not only the our passion but the devs too. I imagine we were all genuine and on the same path until you get just above Jeff. Whoever was making the deadlines and whatnot, that’s the real devil here. I think they were like “you can try to make the mode but if you can’t do it fast enough we’re gonna pull the plug” “nah we’ll get it done”. But then they tried getting just the 6 heroes into working order for the proof of concept and were done, that was by the time they wanted to release Echo, and then did the math and were like well if just 6 took us 6 years and there’s endlessly more… it just became too much so an executive was like, cut your losses and make your bed so we can put the thousands of dollars that are going into millions somewhere else, where it’ll be immediately profitable.

What made Overwatch a colossal success was that it had elements that appealed to EVERYONE. The story and characters got/kept casuals involved, with competitive gameplay. Now the indepth infinitely replayable story mode being gone has fucked the casual players, while the competitive players were fucked repeatedly as the dev team balanced around normies. I miss Goats.
I miss goats too because it meant the heroes were dynamic enough to even establish a meta. Right now, the only defining meta is if they have cc or Ana you go Kiriko. There’s no seasonal identity since they’re afraid to piss anyone off, but Goodman and Jeff knew something more modern designers don’t: pissing off a few players is FUN. I never played Bastion until goats. Never swapped off Mercy or Moira til then. Everything was shaken up and I finally learned Ana. I hate the idea that they’re trying to make everyone viable. We should have had an even stronger Genji with his mythic release, and then let Queen dumpster him, then Kiriko, and so on. Too scared 🤷🏾♂️
The irony is Overwatch has arguably become the least accessible multiplayer game out there. I would say even more than MOBAs at this point. The sheer amount of heroes, maps, context specific rules and interactions and spammy/oppressive abilities makes the game more punishing than anything else I've ever played. It's exhausting for ME with 2000+ hours clocked, I can't imagine what it's like for newcomers
Can we please appreciate the ES Oblivion OST in the background lmfao.
Sometimes I come back to this Video just to see the early aftermath of Overwatch 2 turning into Overwatch *Recalled*
They could have just released like 4 or 5 hero missions like solider, mercy, rein, tracer and Winston as a bonus and been like hero missions is taking longer than expected so were gonna release these 5 and then be like reaper, ball, Ana and genji are expected to be released later this year with more to come as they are finished

What are people talking about "removing loot boxes was a good thing"
Everyone who actually played ow 1, including flats, misses the lootboxes. Even playing casually once in a while could get you legendary skins and if not, you had most of the voice lines and sprays with enough money to get something else and that was free. They had the best lootbox system and replaced it with a shop, how is that better?
I cant understand the hate for loot boxes. I loved the idea of free chances to get skins. It didnt matter most times I got nothing. When I got something it made all the wait worth it. Now there is really no benefit to not paying for skins at all which kinda means hardly any reason to play the game
I myself cant believe im defending lootboxes, but this new system is so baaaad in comparison, it makes me wish them back.
What all of you people that praise the lootbox system don't understand is that in no way would you be able to earn free lootboxes while the game is also free2play. If they were to remain in OW2 they would have been available exclusively from the shop and than you wouldn't have liked them that much would you? Thats why if we have to pay to get skins its better with a paid battlepass so you know what you pay for than lootboxes which are random.
@@user-tl1sz5xs7l it wouldnt have mattered if they were only in the shop because essentially that is how it is now. They also wouldnt really be loot boxes
@@user-tl1sz5xs7l did you forget that Apex exists??? its also f2p and you get a loot-tick just about every other level for free (it starts scaling differently later in levels and cuts off after like 500 (which is when you'd get a free guaranteed heirloom)). OW2 very easily could've just done a similar system and made every other BP level have a lootbox for free and not have them in the store so there isn't a way to "purchase them for gambling" since that was the issue and just keep them as a simple, easy, and free, way to give players older skins/credits.

3:36 As a person born in 1995, this spoke to me😂. I haven’t been able to put it into words how I don’t feel like a millennial or a Gen Z better than this. Forgotten generation is what I’ll call myself lol.
lol "was push the game mode you were playing on the toilet" i laughed so hard at that. @9:38
it was good though.
It's a joke about when you go to the toilet and you have to "PUSH" to get it out lmao.
22:20 Starwatch was pvp+, literally a feeding bot and some lvl 3 torb turrets lmao
oh, and the stationary grav things noone really used (aside from the challenge to destroy 3 lol)
I sure would love an opportunity to discuss and disclose this whole issue on one of the streamer's live shows.
i like how asmon is like i dunno what to say and then makes a 42 min video
i tear up when i see the ow2 announcement trailer, its something i never had but feels like i lost something dear to me
A reaction to a reaction to a reaction. This is prime youtube.
The thing that makes me saddest about PvE is that Blizzard ignored another option on the table - update the workshop into a full map editor like the ones they released in WC and SC. WC3 was literally still running with an active community 18 years after its initial release in 2002 SOLELY because it had a massive backlog of custom games created in its powerful map editor. Games like DotA, which went on to become Valve's cash cow because Blizzard told IceFrog to fuck off when he approached them about releasing it as a full game. And then they killed it with reforged because we can't have nice things, thanks again Blizzard I was just coming around to thinking there might be hope in this world.
If you're focusing entirely on monetizing OW2 with skins and the store and giving up on actual content, why not give your community the tools to make your actual content for you? It just baffles me that not only are they acting scummy, they're also acting STUPID while doing it.
But Blizzard thinks they can avoid losing the next Dota not by being a better partner, but by not providing the full map editor at all.
What they should have done.
Put work on the story and pve of the game and complete it.
Release it with the heros that have finished skill trees.
Release new heroes with skill trees as they finish them.
What kinda of stupid higher up decided to waste actual years of work.
You know that pathfinder BD1 skin I literally already got it years ago. Nothing new happened for me in apex. I was like bruh I already had this and I felt like they gave it out jsut for Jedi Survivors release cuz that’s why we got it last time.
24:17 they made very sure that idea was seeded without crossing a line, legally.
It was basically just a proof of concept video, and a cosmetics pack to profit off of the promise and it worked ssoooooooo well on me, a super fan of Tracer 😭 I just wanted my pulse bombs to duplicate, dayum….
"I'm the forgotten generation between gen z and millennials, I'm the one nobody gives a fuck about"
Holy shit Flats I'm also 27 and damn near pissed myself laughing. I'm never heard our generation summed up so well 🤣
you have the freedom to choose between Z and millenials :D
(I would choose Z)
Don’t listen to the dude above, join us millennials! We have cookies and bacon! 😂
aren't 27 year olds millennials tho?
@@ae-qw5xi they are but everyone hates millennials rn so they would rather distance themselves
Feeling Flats forgotten generation rage, right here with ya buddy!
40:18 HOLY F LMAO
Aaron looks like he aged 20 years since the first time we have seen him to now, its bad when he looks that stressed and pressured
No wonder Jeff greyed out so quickly lmao
I think Blizz didn't fail on titan and OW2. They just fubled titan twice. Once where they made OW2 as a salvage project of titan. And the second time when they couldn't even salvage the pve aspect of titan and failed to deliver.
Imagine an internet historian video detailing everything that went wrong
13:14 is that Mauga in his talon skin??
holy fuck it actually could just be sold as a mauga skin
Someone needs to find Kaplan and interview him. The content would be sooooo good.
Brig having a 53% pick rate in OWL (JUST OWL not regular comp or quickplay): BUSTED CHANGE WHAT ARE YOU DOING
Junker Queen in just about every game making all the other tanks basically useless: zzzzzz honk mimimimi hoooonk mimimimiim zzzzzzz
As a Valorant player, I really liked OW pvp system and was actually interested in it more due to the lore and pve. Kinda dissappointed that they had to drop it off. Was really lookin forward for it.
