Legendary Ningen Isu, the Japanese Black Sabbath. They also deserve more recognition.
I've been hanging around the Japanese rock scene non-stop on YT since summer 2018, but didn't get Ningen Isu recommended until early February 2020. Luckily early enough to see them here in Germany on their first overseas tour after 30 years of band history. I think I would have been pretty pissed if the recommendation had come after their European tour.

Japans Black Sabbath! they finally got recognition outside Japan with the release of "Heartless Scat" in 2019. They dress as a Literary scholar(guitarist), dead monk(bass) and Yakuzi gangster(drums), most songs are adaptations of famous horror and sci fi books and they are my favorite trio after Rush. all credit Black Sabbath as main inspiration but bass player also loves Gene Simmons of Kiss and guitarist is a huge Beatles fan. 30 years of awesome music for you to discover.
There is also a Band-Maid connection as guitarist Kanami(Band-Maid) and guitarist Shinji Wajima(Ningen Isu) did a morning childrens show together where they have a guitar battle, it was cool to see.

Heavy music, heavy riff, 2x guitar solo, lyrics with a story to tell, Ningen Isu is the band that people talking about.
These guys are basically the Black Sabbath of Japan. Not really my style.... but they are pretty cool.
Their songs are catchy and will stick in your head. Lately, it's been "Toshishun" for me. LoL!
They are one of a kind, to think they've been around for so long and with a strong friendship between Suzuki and Wajima. Good news is you now have TONS (really) of stuff to listen to.

These guys are the pure definition of paying dues and the 32 year struggle to be known.Truthfully no one on America except the die hard Japanese metal followers heard of them.I discovered them 2 years ago and became an instant fan.The song Heartless Scat went viral in 2019 and they blew up after 32 years of doing odd jobs living in their car at times they never gave up and kept rocking.What is so ironic is the sing heartless scat was about them praying to the Gods asking why has success and love never found them after decades of putting in the work 🤟

Just think.. their demo dropped in 89, and shortly after, the music industry stopped promoting metal, and pushed the Grunge scene. Then came new metal, emo, then death.. 4 years ago when they had a resurgence, covid hit. Shit luck for a great band. 😢
"Ningen Isu" was formed in 1987 by Shinji Wajima and Kenichi Suzuki from Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture. They have been friends since junior high school through a local rock appreciation party. In 1983 (3rd year high school), Wajima was in charge of guitar and Suzuki was in charge of bass in a band formed by music friends, but it started as "Ningen Isu" in 1987. They have been generally recognized since they appeared in the band battle show on the TV show "Ikaten" in 1989. czcams.com/video/KNxfQGvtmBE/video.html
At that time, Suzuki (B) played the ratman of the character of the anime "Kitarou", but he is now a demon monk. In 2004, Nobu Nakajima joined as the 4th drummer and became the current form. There are many famous songs, but I recommend the new song "Toshishun". "Toshishun" is a short story by Ryunosuke Akutagawa published in 1920 based on an old Chinese novel, and is the name of the main character that appears in it.

I been rocking to these guys for about 1.5 years now thanks to my brother. My first song by them was "Heartless Scat". It was the song that finally started to get them recognition. Which was ironic, because they wrote the son to be about their frustration from all the years they had been playing and not having a break.
This band has some really great songs. Love these guys so much.
It's not easy to recommend any N.I. song, as there just too many very good ones. But never the less: Try Odoru Issunboushi (The Dancing Midget, Tokyo 2014). Besides the first two minutes a long instrumental, the instruments telling the suffering of the midget, how he gets mad, kills the girl he loves and burns down the circus.
Thanks for giving the AARP band members a listen. Wicked good and in your face Black Sabbath 70's metal with lots of Lovecraft and Japanese folk tales to scare anyone. They have lasted longer than many of my friends marriages (LOL). I jumped (actually dragged) into J/Metal in the early 1990's by Show-Ya and this band was already mature!! They play harder and sound better than many bands half their age. It took them years before they were full time musicians having day jobs to keep them going. Typical Japanese band that sounds great LIVE and really just punch your face in with no regrets, while being totally dedicated to their music!! Don't feel bad even in Japan it took a long time for them to be accepted, some claim they simply outlived the competition (LOL)!! Proof like Lovebites, DON'T JUDGE BY APPEARANCES!!! Great reaction as always and as we say this rabbit-hole in deep and never ending so continue journey (unlike as it is more a tumble)!!

It can be said, with a certain margin of safety, that Lovebites, Band Maid, Nemophila and Babymetal, are the most popular bands of the moment, they have their own following of avid fans, and it is thanks to them that Japanese rock has become known in a concrete way to the world, and this reaction on NINGEN-ISU I really appreciate, because it is a band not too well known, very special and with great character, so if I may, I would suggest to have a look at a drummer called JUNNA, for a while she was part of the band TRIDENT but with her character she didn't last long and now she keeps on doing covers with her drums, she's really extraordinary, incredible, the video I suggest is the cover of " Through The Fire And Flames " by DragonForce and she was 13 years old, and congratulations, you're one of the few who does reactions in a convincing way.

She is a ball of total energy and a joy to watch, she is now in a Gothic Metal band with Yashiro (Mary's Blood Live playing member). Unlike most great Japanese drummer that rarely get Shine time Junna sucks all the shine time out of the air but is a blast to experience.
@@jmetallover The cover of Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force is also goosebumpy, because right at the beginning of the song Junna stares at the cymbal in front of her, almost hypnotising it. It lasts a few moments, but you can see all her concentration, Junna is absolutely amazing!

As a fan who has watched the live performance before his debut, I am very happy to receive a reaction from overseas. I think that the times have finally caught up with them through the efforts that have not changed through the original. My recommendation is [Love Suicide At Shinagawa], which is a masterpiece from Japanese classic rakugo, so please listen to it! Also,[Love Nirvana] [Hartless Scat] [Toshishun] This is a real Japanese hard rock band that doesn't look like it.
If youtube only ever did one thing, bring me Ningen Isu, that would be enough.

To add a comment here, these guys have been around for 40 years, and they are almost 60 years old. They appeared in one of the popular talent show in the '80s, and ever since, they have become well known here in Japan. Please watch Ikaten, Ningen-Isu. I think you can find their first debut on television. They look different, but they were excellent to start. I will post that show later if you are interested.
I was moved by your reaction video. I am a 50 year old woman living in Japan. I've known the names of Ningen Isu since I was young, but unfortunately it was last year that I realized their greatness. But better than I never knew. I will continue to listen to their music.

Nice reaction. I get mad I haven't heard of these groups too. Thee Michelle Gun Elephant "Akage No Kelly" live version is really good. They have been together since the '90s.
If you have not heard Heartless Scat I think you should check that song next. It was the gateway song for me, my intro into this band. They are now one of my favorite bands of all time. Many good songs to discover!

Also, another international band I think you would enjoy that I do not see in yer catalog is Alien Weaponry out of New Zealand. They are of Maori heritage and are using their music to keep the Maori language (Te Reo) alive. I suggest starting with the track 'Kai Tangata', followed by 'Blinded'. They are quite young,, if my understanding is correct they were in high school when they recorded Kai Tangata.

Ninjen-Isu is amazing. For as long as they have been around it has only been in recent years that they have finally received worldwide recognition. Their sound is so iconic. I am advocating for you to listen to Scandal. Another Japanese rock band that has been around for 15 years as of this September. They are just good, well crafted j-rock with some pop/funk/punk thrown in for flavoring.

May be you've heard of the Mongolian band "The Hu"? Thay actualy had a tour in the US, but i've heard (about a year ago) few of their songs like "Yuve Yve Yu" and "Wolf Totem" and they rock!)) You realy should check them out.
They are great. I was lucky to see them live here a few years ago. I ended up sick when they came to town last fall and has to miss their show.

Only found out about Ningen Isu recently and really like this song. The breakdown is fantastic. Wish it was longer. How about doing a reaction to the band that was/is the most famous and popular rock/metal band from Japan, X Japan. They are from the 80s and are a big influence on all the younger rock bands from there, including the ones you have done reactions to. I believe at one point Gene Simmons said they would have been the biggest band in the world if they were from the US and sang in English. @@GlobalMusicMayhem If you are doing X-Japan then I have to recommend the saddest but one of the most stunning songs where they were breaking up and this was one of their last shows and the fans wouldn't let them forget how great they were; Endless Rain LIVE (czcams.com/video/7rwJIeN1M7o/video.html), if you learn a little history about the band and what happened to them before and after the breakup this song will really hit you hard. Still emotional watching this song every time, one of the best bands ever to come out of Japan and a major influence on all the great bands playing there still and I mean ALL!!
They've been humping the sound universe for around 34 years in japan. All of them sing & have way different vibes. The more one searches for obscure bands from around the world you come to realize how constricted our musical palette is here in america, and yet foreigners who play western style music mostly draw all of their inspiration from american & british bands or solo artists. It's pretty imbalanced for a variety of F'ed-up reasons, mostly financial & professional competition. And yes, the translation sounds like it came out of a dictionary. All the subtlety of the japanese language & the deep meaning and significance it has for the japanese people is lost. But the music is not. I've heard them perform this live and I've got to say with the volume turned up and a litany of effect pedals, they did a great job matching a majority of the studio version's energy and fatness. Once they get into the grind, you can't help but headbang. Some of the harmonies are blatantly not there but the bass stands out just as much. The fact that each instrument is prominantly displayed & respected adds a great deal to making this a significant piece of modern music.
