    Well, I have watched 3 of this series so far and I believe the Pod Go is really the way to go, at least for what I need it does. Thanks very much for doing the series (I will also watch the others I have not watched yet). Also, it is totally cool with the animals at the end of the videos...
    Note: We have adopted many rescue dogs over the years and have rescued dogs found on the street as well. I did also rescue a cat last September (my very first cat rescue) who kept coming up to me in my backyard. She is now a member of the family too...All the best...

    I won't ofc tell you that every time for obvious reasons like being annoying and repetitive, plus there's also other viewers, that comment, but, let's say, it urged me again to tell you: You produce top notch content, that is highly informative and useful and you deserve every earned dime on these videos! Thx, man.

    Great review Henning, thanks so much. All of your reviews are great- great, in depth information, and lots of humor and personality. I own the Pod Go and have owned the full floor Helix and native since it came out. I am also a 35 year professional sound engineer for television and university audio educator. Set the same, doing a blind ABX test, the full Helix and Pod Go sound exactly the same. Haven't tried a null test but it doesn't matter - blind they are indistinguishable.

    • @teriakamoto
      @teriakamoto Před 4 lety

      exactly. I was quoted a 400.00 USD price New in the U.S. so it's a simple decision. I already have the Helix lt and like 5 others and I love Atomic AA6 but fried it accidentally plugging my pedal power brick power supply into it and have been looking for options. I like simple. I'm not a computer science guy. I'm old and didn't grow ups w computers and commenting on youtube is about my technical limit. I have several great heads and a Rockcrusher attenuator and large bins full of vintage and new pedals. might give the POD GO, a GO.

    Thanks for the vid Henning! I've been eyeing some of these options and this is helpful. The lack of midi kills it for me so I may just buy something like an hx effects or full helix. I think the HX Stomp is really cool since it's tiny, just wish it had a bit more processing power and the midi capabilities are limited

    Thanks for the review, a lot of hard work, helping me to make a decision on which unit I should buy

  • @angrygoldfish
    @angrygoldfish Před 4 lety +15

    The price of the HX Stomp I'd imagine is justified by being a part of the Helix family, which has more robust editing software and receives regular and comprehensive updates. POD GO is part of the POD family and will not likely see the same future support. It may cost more to cram all the parts into a smaller enclosure. The parallel routing may be complex to achieve. Midi is not always cheap to implement. The Stomp does have more processing power, but only slightly. It's probably the same chip as the GO but at a higher clock speed. The Stomp has higher sample rate IR loading. It has longer looping time.
    By the way, the number of blocks is not an indicator of processing power. Line 6 have confirmed that firmware 3.0 will bring 8 blocks to the Stomp. It's not increasing the processing power; it's adding blocks for people who have processing power left in a preset and want to add an effects loop block, a wah, a volume pedal, an EQ, something that doesn't require very much power.
    Also, the Helix LT and Floor have dual processors. It's the same chip as the Stomp; just two of them for parallel processing.

    • @jerryreichelderfer747
      @jerryreichelderfer747 Před 4 lety +1

      I guess we will see how the support goes for the POD, but you are likely correct. They left the Firehawk FX in the wind a long time ago but still sell it new today, all the while adding lots of stuff to the Helix line.

  • @michaelfolsom6654
    @michaelfolsom6654 Před 4 lety +10

    Great series, Henning! The POD Go does technically have MIDI, but via USB only. The CC assignments are even essentially the same as the HX products. I seem to recall an interview out there with a Line 6 product rep stating that the HX Stomp, does technically have a more capable DSP in it, and is just block limited. From what I understand, the POD Go has more blocks due to the fact that some of the fixed effects are relatively low-demand on the processor. Also, the 3.0 HX update is supposed to add two more blocks to the Stomp (increased flexibility, although that will also make it easier to run out of DSP faster) and MIDI Command Center (which the POD Go will not have). It will be interesting to see if 3.0 gives additional benefits to the Stomp, as well. Another plus for the HX Stomp is that it will always get the same model updates the Helix does. Time will tell if the POD Go does, as well. I think you nailed the reasoning, though: HX Stomp incorporates better with an existing pedal board, whereas POD Go is better as a (somewhat cheaper) grab-and-go that is a bit friendlier to use and less of a loss if damaged on the road.

      the pod is great for someone who wants and quick "all in one" effect box.. it's great item for someone who want to enter this world of modelers.

    The Pod Go receives and transmits MIDI messages via USB. So, although it has not the old MIDI connectors the functionality is there, with the limitation that you have to have some computer like device to send/receive the messages.

    Realy nice comparision. Thank's for the efforts using the same input performance and dialing up close presets. Nevertheless, as you mentioned those two devices are totally different beasts. Using the PodGo as-is modeller it's really a bargain sound wise. Just plug your guitar in, fiddle some knobs and you'll get a pretty good sound compared to the Helix and beyond pro stuff out there. But for pro's you just try to find your sounds, at least for a season, and that's totally fine with the HX Edit software (which you won't get with the Pod Go). Having setup your device once correctly it's much more about integration to the different usage scenarios. This is where the HX Stomp shins with all it's in and out's and MIDI !!. Well, as a HX Stomp owner....two of 'em, I tried the PodGo at Thomann and well yes...it made my cry because of the money. But being back home, looking at my board and rack I still smile owing the HX Stomp because it just fits my needs.....FOR JUST 80€ more :)

    It seemed to me at some points (not always), with some tones, that the Pod Go was slightly brighter than the HX. Or the HX might have the volume a bit lower.
    But as this is something easily equalizable in any situation, we can consider them tonally equal.

    I think the helix is for those people who already have a pedalboard set, and works with more speaker options. Its for those looking for a mini all-in-one addition for their board. The pod go is for people like me, who play mostly in my house, play at small events and live gigs. The pod go is very handy for musicians like me. Both sound great to be honest, they have differences yes but all in all, both sound great. It just depends on what you really need as a player. :)

    I think midi is a huge deal for the HX. Midi really opens up a massive amount of options. As well as some of the other options mentioned like stereo, better amp/cab options, etc. The small size is a big factor as well. That being said, the sound was identical to me and the POD Go is a great choice if you are not looking to use any of the options the HX brings to the table.

    Amp is way nicer, but there is no way I need or will use it.
    With this there is always the problem that it is digital, and helix has been out for a while now. Eventually a new generation will come and there always seems to be a good improvements there.

    Hi Henning, greets from just south of Würzburg! Here are my 5ct:
    Modeling has come a long way - both are great, in essence the story is not about which is better but that modeling is good enough. Both units are a steal. I switched to a HX Stomp (which I bought for 390€ used) replacing my huge board and a 100w top (which I sold all together for 2000€!!!), and my band claims that I have the best sound ever! One thing I want to point out: many people experience problems with the the LT expression pedal, so I am afraid that Line 6 might be a bit easy on the design side with the lower priced versions. Certainly processing power is an issue with the stomp, and might be even more so with the POD go. The one effect which really sucks with all Line 6 products is polyphone octaving, this I still keep as a stomp (and the wah/vol, but just because I need the expression channels for switching buttons, the wah emulation is in fact just fantastic). So I guess there is a valid option for anyone, at the advertised prices all are great choices!

    "I am not a modeller fan" - with $20 000 worth of amps behind him and probably some crazy expensive solution to switch between them easily.
    The main reason I switched to an HX Stomp (and now to POD GO) is I got sick of debugging my pedal chain. A patch cable breaks here, some knob turns there, one pedal causes noise etc.

      I got sick of cable management and pluging in 5 different wall sockets. it would have cost me 250$ for a power supply that would hold all of them. just sold most of it and covered the cost for a Helix LT, minues 80$ I still have to make up :)

    Great video thanks. Superb audio and video quality as always. Love your posts. Dumb question but if I just have an amp does either one of these pedals make any sense? Like this will probably sound like shit through my Roland blues cube amp right? Nobody ever talks about or shows you how they are hooking these up and what speakers or cabs or amps they are using. Do you need some sort of interface to use the pod go? Or would it sound okay through the front of an amp with no effects loop? The effects sound great through whatever you’re using but I don’t have a setup like yours. A blues cube amp is like playing through a tin can compared to the gear you have. Still curious as to whether this is a good option for someone who just has an amp? Or am I better off with my amp and my pedals? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Soundwise no difference. I think their just tools with different purposes. The HX Stomp will work well with your existing pedalboard. If you like your signal chain but you don't want to carry 2 big amps with you for a stereo setup or you need a univibe for just 2 songs and the next song needs 2 delays etc. the stomp can provide that. Kinda like a swiss army knife in your existing rig.
    PodGo is an all in one solution. If you want to be versatile in any situation, it seems like a great tool.

      It's different in a tube amp because you need relays and have the Midi communicate with the analog circuits. Here is is already all digital and the MIDI would be a cheap addition. It is really just the physical midi ports that are missing.

      Eric Klein (Line 6) talked about that during a Tone Wars interview. Adding VDI and/or Line 6 Digital ports evidently adds significant cost per unit. Their design goal was to pare down the HX hardware as much as possible on the POD Go to make it as affordable as possible, while keeping the same modelling algorithms.

    I guess they added the Pod Go to the Pod family becuase of it beeing easier to use. The Helix Family is quite hard to use. For Line 6 it does not make any sence to build a new sound engine (or whatever its call but i think you get what i mean) that should sound wore than the HX Family just becuase its a Pod. They just took the one they had and pulled some features out to make it more accessible. I woulnd say one is worse than the other, they just have two different
    target groups. I get why they sound the same. But i dont get the Price Difference. 90 € Ok, understandable. But 200$ ??? I think the HX Stomp is more like a Pro isch Product, with dual Channel Midi, etc. etc.. And the Pod is a all in one soulution for Private use and beginners. It does not offer the overwhelming options of the HX Stomp and is easier to learn.
