- One of the UK's top military chiefs says that Britain's Special Forces act as a "vanguard for defence", which helps the wider military to evolve, enabling new and different ways of working.
In an exclusive interview with Forces News, the Commander of Strategic Command, General Sir Jim Hockenhull, gave an exceptionally rare insight into this incredibly secretive organisation.

In the 1980s the SF Directorate could recruit from a pool of around 150,000 soldiers in the Army. Now that pool has shrunk by 50%, and the demands are arguably greater. I think we've got a problem.
In the mid 70’s they were advertising for people in Soldier Magazine; I recall seeing the ads myself. No one wants to be bothered to join.
My learning started aged 8, but it's not being extended.
With shrinkage of numbers it must be harder to maintain quality and standards of intake to SF
@@robertstark8527That's not how they recruit - there's a personality profile. I matched it, but said no when approached in 77-8, because their political masters are unreliable. It didn't stop me, and I ended up earning the respect of some heavies in the Regiment, the hard way. I also started winning the respect of politicians, as I'm probably the inspiration for Cummings' search for weirdos and misfits. He didn't find any, and for the second time in my life, I discovered good reason not to work with them.
The real problem is that the education system destroys us. It produces entitlement rather than competence.
@@JelMain I’m an ancient 2434. Your experience sounds really fascinating. Please tell us more….who was your parent, stuff like that.
British special forces really are amazing, can't even imagine the things they've done which we'll never get to know about
the best
Our special forces are the best in the world, any place anytime, they are there. We as a nation are very proud of them. Our unsung heroes. God Bless you and bring you home safe.🇬🇧
Considering that a large proportion of British SF start their military careers in the Royal Marines, it’s crucial that funds are found to keep Albion & Bulwark operational until replacements are in place to take over…
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
The Corps makes up 4.5% of the UK military but provides 43% of UKSF.
When you add in Commando trained other Arms that figure goes up to 60% of UKSF.
Our value is beyond question ... yet that idiot Grant Shapps has asked the First Sea Lord to justify our existence.
Unbelievable.
Not that many - RMs are the heavies. Paras the fast, SAS the clever. I'm from a Marine family, but turned 23 down - and still earned their respect..
@@JelMain - what are you waffling about?
Off to bed for you, you've got school in the morning.
@@JammyDodger45 If only - I've been good friends with Pete MacManamon, him I can name because he's passed. And his mates, who came to work for us in WEU once they left the Regiment. They'd offered me Bob Nairac's job in 77-78, but I was as good as they thought and got the Regular IRA to talk. Dad was a fixture in the Commons, and checked the Official Side, which matched, showing there was no path forwards. It took 20 years and 1600 lives to get HMG to see sense.
I returned to that circle in c2014, Johnny Mercer, David Davies, Rory Stewart, and showed what I was capable of. Now we've heard from Dominic Cummings his side of the weirdos and misfits scandal, it's very likely I was the original. They couldn't find any more, and Boris had trashed us, killing his golden goose.
You see, I have changed the world. I am Tier One - in fact, Peter Carington, when Head of Bilderberg, introduced me to the Heads of State - by my first name. I put a significant chunk of the inspiration into the team which won the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize.
So stick it where the sun don't shine - sideways. You don't rate.
Happy as hell that the Brits are on our side. Bravo Great Britain and all the lads.
Every Brit I've met - very polite and great sense of humour, but strong inner strength. Both UK males and females seem to have those character traits. Ken Florida
They are a brilliant resourceful bunch of people.
We actually need a lot more ordinary troops so that we can defend ourselves and our allies in the case of a major war in Europe
More and more sofisticate tehnology not only for UK USA sholdiers to hold wholle free western NATO world in coordination. Need to respect every civilian job together with professional sofisticate Army in every states of Allies, every civilian job can give some of sofisticate inovation for defend. Rest of world cant follow sofisticate work of free western world. I pray for time of highest tehnology ( drons, robots etc etc) what will keep safe every soldier. We dont need expresion of big Army, we need sofisticatie constantly working professional Army and strong middle working class of free people in duty with proudly paying taxes in wholle free western. If need 5% - 10% for NATO what problem its only game if have own manufactury and stop losing money in not important things care about one cent.we cant playing with tic toc or huwaei if want our way of living fir that we need little to understand Dylan song Covenant woman when sing "be stay closser in everything" and my conclusion but allways be without fear and free.
youre 100% correct, SF units can't do their job properly with out well trained 'Regular' units doing the hard down and dirty jobs.
👏👏👏....fair play, these guys are the best of the best!!👌..glad we got you guys!!👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
Recognise them by remuneration, accommodation and stop pension raids. Most of all encourage not discourage promotion. A family member can’t be promoted into an available rank because there is no upward mobility into his rank!!! If you are listening then you will know all of this. If not then your retention rates will continue to plummet. Young lads want toys and that means money. Defence 2% of GDP needs to be 3%.
Namaste British SP Operators,
We just want to say Thank You, to all British SF Operators.
We don't want to know or ask what you do, to protect us all.
We are just be greatful, you are out there somewhere? and protecting us all!
With the UK Enemies, always having to look over their shoulders, worried when or if British SF Operators.
Will come out of the Dark to Strike quickly, then disappear back into the Darkness afterwards just as quickly too.
Only to be waiting to strike again and again, when necessary against the UK enemies whoever that maybe too!
Thank you boys and girls, of British Special Forces, plus an equal thanks to SF Veterans too.
You are all Second to No One, sadly unsung heroes one and all too!
We know on your watch, when standing post we will be safe.
The same thanks, goes for the rest of British Armed Forces personnel current serving, or former serving too.
Thanks for your bravery, honour, duty and service too, least we forget your sacrifices too.
For our welfare and wellbeing plus security too, though our gratitude goes to military families, for their sacrifices too!
Namaste 🙏, Gurkhamum and Wheelchaircharlie39
Integrated, robust, flexible, streamlined, integration, pooling, efficiency, initiatives, renovations….
All words to deflect from the fact that we are SEVERELY undermanned in all the services and are SEVERELY underfunded as well.
Under recruiting, Unable to retain talented personnel as well as underfunded
Our SF are unique and awesome. 👍👍👍
Good swerve of the funding ( or lack of) issue though.
The men are incredible they're unsung hereoa
A lot of talk and nothing said
Sums up the M.O.D to be fair.
Sums up senior officers, great at waffling
3:24-3:40 is the royal marines recce team. "Quiet, descreet...dont get recognition "........yeahhhh theres more ex sf on tv / internet as personalities than there are ex none sf......
The British State has treated Serving Personnel and Veteran’s including SF so appallingly they can no longer recruit sufficient numbers.
One example of this is how they treated Northern Ireland Veterans!
The British State is despised by so many Veteran’s including myself. They will never be trusted again!
And that makes a thousand likes:)
I used to jump out the beck of a Herc.
Did you often land on your head?
Wonderful hair of course, an absolute must is wonderful hair.
Literally do a Special Forces style Recruitment advert
0:47 u.k best baby❤️🇬🇧💯 0:59
It is possible the US will leave NATO. The remainder of NATO need to specialise in Air Sea and Land. The UK should focus on SF. Big focus on RM and type B role regiments Para, Gurkhas etc. With the resources we have we cannot do everything so get out of the type. A role of Armoured warfare. When the Russians get to us that won’t help.
Nukes say otherwise
Can’t even recruit enough regular soldiers so SF have a lower pool of people to recruit from
OpSec? 😂😂😂😂
As an ex member of the uk military, it's so pathetic listening to these idiots trying to convince the country that our military is still even significant in NATO,let alone capable of defending our own islands!!!!
Man seemed deflective of answers. £50m is not a lot in today’s currency. Our dudes need more
He said 50 BILLION Pounds, Not Million.
I heard from a whistleblower that there was a 2 Tschernobyl in russia but dont know if its fake or Not it was said that it radioctived so hard that the whole Eastern north but dont know probably it should happen in the Future like the earthquake in france according to the whistle
I gurantee, the UK toilet roll does not cost 50$....lol
Another senior officer using lots of words to say nothing
Men with bouffant hair are suspect
I would disagree. In WW2 we had lots of “special forces” running around the Western Desert playing soldiers. It wasn’t until we bit the bullet and organised ourselves into proper formations with appropriate logistic support that we got the job done.
yeah but cant thank them for saving 700 odd lives, mod top brass are a bunch of w⚓️s
🫡🇬🇧
Знакомые всё лица!
What an absolutely pointless interview. Why bother.
Well you watched it. 😂
Cool but more actions less talking
LOST THERE LAST TWO WARS. GOT TAUGHT BY THE AFGHANISTAN AND IRAQI FREEDOM FIGHTERS HOW REAL MEN SHOULD FIGHT
Brain dead
The problem is, we're not researching what makes them Special. I said no to them, in 78, but still managed it.
£2.5bn gone to Ukraine how does that help the UK forces?
Well Poland is still buffered from Russia by Ukraine, which means most of our boys are at home, intead of sat in Poland. Money well spent if you ask me. Rather that then it go on benefits for the lazy or as finanical aid to India or some such place.
A joke of course! Wasted money to a ridiculous cause!
@@weeman9869 You clearly miss understood
Its £2.5bn of military aid not council tax or NI
So when this guy says £50bn for UK military but of that £50bn £2.5bn goes to ukraine Ukraine isnt even in Nato so your poland/russia narrative doesnt fit
Im sorry i had to explain it better to you as you clearly dont understand
@@weeman9869 i never knew military funds were allocated towards benefits
I mean if you watched the video you would know i was talking about military funding packages
Im sorry your confused between military funds and social funds 🤦♂️ im glad your not in charge you would ssnd the whole defence budget to ukraine
Key word there fella Defence budget never knew russia was that much of a direct threat to the UK
Same with the illegal migrants 🤦♂️
By seeing how our kit and equipment fares against a peer adversary?? 🤔
At what point would any other nation want to invade uk 😂😂they have ruined the army raf navy with red tape and budgets but waist money on a railway line.
You're lying and disingenuous. People are leaving UKSF hand over fist.
I think it's like that in many organisations though, SF in general are there to be the tip of the spear, why train everyday when you can put those skills to use for more money in a PMC or overseas in Ukraine or other hot spots all over the globe? From my understanding the guys get bored, they leave to move on to more exciting things.
Not true. You are disingeniuos mendaciuos, and perfidious, and lying, to what end I don't know, however there are now 3 Branches of the UKSF not just two. So please provide your information and where on the internet you got this misinformation.
The very fact UKSF numbers aren't ever published tells us that your statement is entirely made up, unless you have unique access to top secret information that the rest of us don't.
Didn’t know Kier Starmer was a Commander aswell
