  • One of the UK's top military chiefs says that Britain's Special Forces act as a "vanguard for defence", which helps the wider military to evolve, enabling new and different ways of working.
In an exclusive interview with Forces News, the Commander of Strategic Command, General Sir Jim Hockenhull, gave an exceptionally rare insight into this incredibly secretive organisation.

In the 1980s the SF Directorate could recruit from a pool of around 150,000 soldiers in the Army. Now that pool has shrunk by 50%, and the demands are arguably greater. I think we've got a problem.

@@robertstark8527That's not how they recruit - there's a personality profile. I matched it, but said no when approached in 77-8, because their political masters are unreliable. It didn't stop me, and I ended up earning the respect of some heavies in the Regiment, the hard way. I also started winning the respect of politicians, as I'm probably the inspiration for Cummings' search for weirdos and misfits. He didn't find any, and for the second time in my life, I discovered good reason not to work with them.
The real problem is that the education system destroys us. It produces entitlement rather than competence.

@@JammyDodger45 If only - I've been good friends with Pete MacManamon, him I can name because he's passed. And his mates, who came to work for us in WEU once they left the Regiment. They'd offered me Bob Nairac's job in 77-78, but I was as good as they thought and got the Regular IRA to talk. Dad was a fixture in the Commons, and checked the Official Side, which matched, showing there was no path forwards. It took 20 years and 1600 lives to get HMG to see sense.
I returned to that circle in c2014, Johnny Mercer, David Davies, Rory Stewart, and showed what I was capable of. Now we've heard from Dominic Cummings his side of the weirdos and misfits scandal, it's very likely I was the original. They couldn't find any more, and Boris had trashed us, killing his golden goose.

A family member can’t be promoted into an available rank because there is no upward mobility into his rank!!! If you are listening then you will know all of this. If not then your retention rates will continue to plummet. Young lads want toys and that means money. Defence 2% of GDP needs to be 3%.

It is possible the US will leave NATO. The remainder of NATO need to specialise in Air Sea and Land. The UK should focus on SF. Big focus on RM and type B role regiments Para, Gurkhas etc. With the resources we have we cannot do everything so get out of the type. A role of Armoured warfare. When the Russians get to us that won’t help.
