  • A former head of the Royal Marines has warned the Government's rumoured plans to retire HMS Albion and her sister ship HMS Bulwark would create "real difficulty" for the corps.
Major General Buster Howes, a former commandant general of the Royal Marines, told the Sitrep podcast the move to axe the ships was "about money".

This gentleman is absolutely correct. Politicians are all about cutting costs. This " fighting a bean counters war." Was exactly what defence secretary MacNamara tried during the Vietnam War. The result was an immense cost in lives, finances and national identity. The state of the British forces in the 1970- 80's a shoe string economy. That the Falkland conflict was a success was down to excellent leadership and personnel in the military. Along with some bad decisions made by the Argentine Command structure. Without sage direction from William Whitelaw. A politician with actual combat experience. (A WW2 tank commander. An officer in the tanks.. D Day onwards.)The politicians could have totally derailed the efforts of Major General Jeremy Moore, Brigadier's Julian Thompson and Tony Wilson. The Naval command of Admiral "Sandy" Woodwarrd and Commander Mike Clapp. If the RN had had aircraft like Phantoms and Buccaneers available on suitable aircraft carrier's. There would not have been any conflict. Indeed the stance of the British government at the time. Indicated a lack of interest in the future of the Falklands. The House of Lord's voting not to allow the Islanders British passports for example! When Argentina did some " Saber rattling" during the Callahan Primiership. A destroyer was sent down to the Falklands and the situation was resolved. Funny how it worked out under Maggie Thatchers time at Nummber Ten. Bottom line is that preparing for anything seems to influence it not happening. Karma watches and listens! Just like potential adversaries.

It takes years for military personnel to attain senior rank as well as a fair degree of political acumen to boot. So its absolutely ludicrous that someone like Shapps with zero experience, is in charge of our defence, it's far too important for a politician. We need expert people, perhaps from the defence industry and preferably retired so they're more likely to make impartial decisions. We've been relying on the U.S for far too long and if they do indeed pull out of NATO we'll be left high and dry. Aukus is long term and still heavily reliant on America. we should not only be keeping these LPD's for now, but ordering newer and larger ones ASAP. it would be better to have 3, as we could have them ready to deploy more and less of the refit stuff. ideally we would have 4. another capability we should be getting back is what left with HMS Ocean. Having LPD's is one thing but we need to replace that capability that an LHD gives. We should buy 2 large LHD's that can carry F-35B and helicopters, like HMS Ocean and the new American ones. Ideally we'd have 2-3 LPD and 1, maybe 2 LHD. They could relive the carriers in situations like the red sea, where the LHD could bring marines, attack helicopters, and enough fixed wing jets to support operations like what is going on now. Something the size of an invincible, maybe slightly larger at about 220-230m long, that could carry 24 aircraft, and have a well deck. 8x F-35B, 2x Merlin AEW, 4x Apache's, 2x ASW merlin, 4x Merlin Junglie, 4x Wildcat. that could easily all be put on a LHD, they would be immensely useful in the world we are in now, and be able to bring jets when the carriers are out of action or busy. Like I say, just 1 to replace Ocean would be nice, but ideally 2, then we could have 4 aircraft carrying ships like the days of Invincible, Illustrious, Ark Royal and Ocean, and then 2-3 LPD's. Our Military needs to expand and needs these changes to operate and stay a leading power.

The Royal Marines will be developed from being an amphibious infantry, held at readiness, to a forward-based, highly capable, maritime-for-future commando force, further enabled by the conversion of a Bay class landing ship to enable littoral strike. The Secretary of State for Defence
(Mr Ben Wallace) All future wars will be insurgency in nature ( Mr Philip Hammond ) when he made 4,480 Army personnel redundant with the aim to reach its target of 82,000 regular soldiers by 2017 while the number of reservists is to increase from 15,000, in 2010, to 30,000 in 2018. , aka his pie in the sky new look Army , and of course as predicted, it never happened , no way could he even recruit 50% of the number of part timers , even the regulars he offered cash to go part time never signed up , as for the knock on effect of that , Recruitment ???

If the politicians send us to war then let them be the first to pick up a rifle stand in the frontline in the first wave to go over the top back in this 1970s we were briefed on a defended beach assault we were to expect 75% casualties the wounded would receive basic treatment and left for the follow-up troops to treat and evacuate them back to hospital ships
Now let our politicians think hard and very hard and have the balls and guts to pick up a rifle And style be something armed forces.
What made Churchill a great leader with many floors he served on the northwest frontier in India he then was in the Los Cavalry Charge at Omdurman He did battle in politics and when his planned illegally campaign went sour resigned he is posted the First Law of the Admiralty and volunteered to serve on the Western Front jerry the Great War WW1 Having survived he went back into politics battling hard all his principles and in some ways in the early stages of the Second World War he was the last man standing and formed a coalition government And there the Winston Rise to the challenge bringing forth the nation to back him and support him then Labour got in if only our current MPS good match that type of service.

However, there are no real wars since WW II and even that was a staged agenda with Adolf through the Bush family being escaped the Buena Aries. The same Place Saddam was secretly moved to.
The militaries are being disbanded, the idea of countries and central governments also being dismantled, of course we know the so called ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT agenda, however, that wont come to fruition as the old world status is bankrupt.
I understand your point of view, I too started with the Parachute Regiment, eventually left after my contracted time and re-joined 29 commando, 148 Meiktila Bty FO.
