Paul Kagame: Transforming Rwanda | Talk to Al Jazeera

  • Paul Kagame took office just six years after the 1994 genocide, in which some 800,000 people were slaughtered in an ethnic conflict.
But although Rwanda has transformed into what many consider “Africa’s tech hub” and achieved rapid economic growth, it has struggled to leave its dark past behind.
And while many see Kagame as a visionary leader, others claim he is a threat to democracy.
After winning his third term in 2017 with nearly 99 percent of the vote, how much longer is he planning to hold on to power? The president of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, talks to Al Jazeera.

For 27 years, reports on the alarming human rights violations in Rwanda have been published one after another, without any significant measure undertaken by the international community to intervene against the injustice that prevails in Rwanda. Instead, Paul Kagame continues to enjoy political, economic, financial, and technical assistance from the international community. The restrictions of fundamental rights and freedoms exercised by the regime of Paul Kagame are characterized by arbitrary imprisonments, torture, enforced disappearances and assassinations of citizens. The RPF regime led by Paul Kagame has excluded part of the population on an ethnic basis. The Hutus and the Twa are excluded from real filling in the institutions of Rwanda (beyond political posts without real power). It should be noted that the exclusion of ethnic groups from power is a breeding ground for civil war and violent conflict.

I haven't been there but I have watched a lot of videos by travellers who have documented their experiences in Rwanda. The success of that country is undeniable and amazing how far they've come from the chaos and tragedy just not long ago. Kagame is not a perfect leader, but unfortunately we live in a tribalistic continent, so we need tough leaders like him.

The Rwandan Government led by the Dictator Paul Kagame thinks itself prosperous with the money of, among others, the European taxpayers, while the population of Rwandan is highly food insecure and starving of hunger, Rwanda is in fact poverty-stricken. In his book - Kagame's Economic Mirage - Prof.dr. David Himbara, who served twice under Kagame, most notably as head of Kagame's Strategy and Policy Unit from 2006 to 2010, explains why the math of Kagame’s supposed accomplishments simply doesn't add up.Human rights advances have taken a back seat to Kagame's push for economic prosperity, while his boasts that a peasant economy is giving way to a dynamic, knowledge-based
market are overblown and misguided at best. The book is an insider's view of a corrupt political system that is holding citizens back.

I can tell you that success that Rwanda has had is largely because they have a long and sustained leadership under Kagame.

@Rock Landstone Dictator himself. If you have a she-like leader nothing you can do. If you have a Trump-like leader nothing you can do. So what would protect the people from a Dictator is the Dictator himself. That is why I always say, do not bring bad leaders closer to power because sooner they will ascend to power and when they do, a common man will have no option because that kind of person will have grabbed all the institutions to work for him. We should just learn what happened in America. Trump captured all the American institutions for himself. Given time, trump would have demolished all your so-called strong institutions and remained in power indefinitely.

    • @tiktocky8175
      @tiktocky8175 Před 2 lety +2

@Rock Landstone where we come from that exactly how it works brother! same playbook. It's not like we love dictators rather it's just that we luck alternative means to dislodge them. We tried wars and it didn't work. That is why I say any bad aspiring leader should not be allowed to come anywhere close to power. In other words, trim them before they grow. Because if you allow them to flourish you are inviting trouble for the Nation in the near future. Republicans had the opportunity to stem the rise of Trump at the primaries but they didn't. Now, what they have is a Trump that keeps dividing Americans even as he is no longer in power. In Rwanda, no politician is allowed to divide the people. Because we know in Africa we cant handle that division like Americans. In Africa, we need strong men like Kagame to steer us to Glory, not some me too political politicians.

As a Nigerian I've watched several Western Journalist interview this man called Paul Kagame and one thing that baffles me is that these journalists usually ask him questions that samples western values as the best point of view, which I think is a wrong way to ask a man who understands that the world cannot be viewed from one lens or perspective in order to get the right view of things. Also, he always try to correct them and let them know that he's not against their view but they should respect other peoples view and what works for them in their own dynamic space. Also this idea of superiority and inferiority of whose values are best to fit and fix this dynamic space called Earth or the world as we may know it, will surely leave a bad taste in everyone's mouth because one size doesn't fit all. Truly "Democracy is not defined by the West"....💯

One of the most efficient, at that, since Thomas Sankara and few..very few..others! Now, no one is perfect. And he is NOT perfect. But at the end of the day, he is one of the FEW...who made a difference. Look at his country: clean, beautiful, well organized. Have you been to Rwanda lately?

You are biased in a way you try to use the corrupted Himbara as your source. Himbara was fired because he was corrupted, he can't be a reliable source of information; you can fool some people but not all.
RDC Congo issues started long before Kagame was born, deal with your issues like men and stop being crying babies.
2nd, Rwanda survived a 4 years Civil war and 1 of the world worse genocide in history which killed 1 millions Tutsi and some hutu opposition political leaders in less than 100 days. The 4 years war started because Dictator Habyarimana refused the right of Tutsi refugees to return home to Rwanda for 30 years until they decided to come back home by launching a successful gerilla war against extremist dictator regime of Habyarimana and his French allies soldiers.
Yes, Rwanda is enclaved, small, not very rich in natural ressources, but against all odds, Rwanda survived the war and successful managed to rebuild its economy to the point where Rwamda can now finance 62% of their own budget, with remaining 38% of budget money coming from aid and loans/grants.
